Yeah I totally agree with you. If I didn't have to use PS at all, I'd be happy.

I shot for almost a year before I switched to RAW. It'll rock your world. It's essentially a digital negative.

Yeah I highly recommend a PS class. Also/or in addition to, I'd check out the book "The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby. It's a great aid (I think it works for beginners too). It sits next to my monitor at home. Great intro to RAW as well as how to use PS for enhancing/fixing digital photos. Great stuff. Amazon has it for ~25 smokes.

We start shooting RAW in a few weeks. I guess I still think of this class for beginners who are learning the ins-and-outs of digital photography.

I think that I'll probably take the PS class next so I can learn cool tricks and how to save a photo that needs a little bit of help.

I think everyone has a line for what they are willing to do with Photoshop and what they won't. For a class setting, I'm surprised that using PS to majorly alter a photo wasn't shot down. When I shoot, I try to capture it the way I see it for the most part. However, since I shoot in RAW, PS becomes a photolab of sorts that allows me to change the exposure, shadows, etc should I have screwed up in the field (e.g. on a RAW image, you can manipulate a full f/stop in either direction). To me that's the "major" beauty of shooting digitally (otherwise just use film). Plus, PS becomes a great tool for doing black and white (which is a whole other art-form).

I guess it depends on what you're trying to communicate. For me, if I'm trying to say "Hey, I shot this. What do you think?", then I'm using PS merely to correct any mistakes made in the field (which for me tend to be plenty ;)). However if the goal is to communicate something else, whether it be art, advertising, humour, commentary, etc. I think it's all fair game.

I think it just depends on the photographer...but I wouldn't hestitate to use PS to save a photo.
