99 In The Shade

Hell Paso Here I Come
It’s going to be nearly 100 degrees in El Paso Texas tomorrow, and that’s where I will be

El Paso

Oh joy! At least it will be a dry heat, right?

I Want My $2
On Friday night the hash happy hour was Flatiron. I love when I can walk to the bars for the hash happy hour. After a couple of pints someone entered the bar and asked us why we weren’t drinking $2 pints / $7 pitchers of Sam Adams over at Crave (which I don’t have listed on this site, huh). That situation quickly changed. Many applause to Michelle, the kind waitress of Crave for serving us copious amounts of Sam Adams, always with a smile, and most likely acting as a buffer between us and the management that didn’t seem too keen on having a bunch of drinkers pulling tables around their patio.

After getting my fill of Sam Adams I stumbled over to The EARL where I ran into Fat Asian Baby, and finally introduced myself to Chris, bass player of Sovus Radio and son of hasher “Two Crabs.” I timed my visit perfectly because no sooner did I have a Miller High Life in hand then Kill Gordon, the band I was there to see, started their set.

Kill Gordon is a local three-piece (guitar, bass, drums) who blew me away with raw energy. The guys have definite musical talent and the hard- driven Nirvana-esque (sorry, but the comparison had to be made and I am sure that I am not the first to do so) show that they put on convinced me that I will have to attend another one of their shows in the future.

Have Camera Will Travel
I didn’t plan for this weekend to be a photography weekend, it just happened that way. I woke up late on Saturday and wasn’t in the mood to sit around and catch the end of the day’s stage of the Tour de France. I left the house, swung by the garage sale being run by my friends Mike and Sandy, and then headed over to American Roadhouse for some Saturday brunch.

I don’t make it to American Roadhouse often, it’s one of those places I like but think about too late or on a Sunday when it is really crowded. It seems that every time I go there it’s Thanksgiving because I usually order the turkey and stuffing blue plate which is served with cranberry jelly. Yum, yum, yum!!!

After leaving American Roadhouse I decided to walk off lunch by doing a little solo photostroll downtown.

As you can see I went into SunTrust Plaza

Star Wars Or SunTrust? Sometimes It's Hard To Tell

and into the Marriot Marquis

The Beehive That Is The Marriot Marquis
And if you swing over to my Flickr photostream you can see the rest of my pictures from this weekend.

On Sunday I received a text message from my friends Stacy and Phil telling me that they were out doing a photostroll in Ansley and asking me if I had plans. We decided to meet up at the Corner Tavern in Little Five Points and proceeded to drink there, the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club, and El Myr before deciding to call it quits.

One More Time, With Feeling

Ooops, I never made it over to Corned Beef Sunday at Twain’s. Well, since no one told me that they were going over there yesterday I am sure I didn’t leave anyone hanging. If I did, I apologize.

The Number Of The Count Shall Be Three

It Must Be A Record
Three nights in a row I’ve gone out for a run (with some walking thrown in unfortunately). Three. Nights. In. A. Row. Certainly no one else has accomplished this feat since the beginning of written history. Huh? Really? Well crap, I’ll never be able to run that many nights in a row. Perhaps I’ll be taking the night off from running tonight….

Seriously, last night being a Thursday during Daylight Savings I should have been on the bike riding with the Pizza Ride out of Avondale Estates. However, I thought that I saw red blotches on the AccuWeather radars, so I figured running would be a wiser choice. If you have a right sidebar, you can see that I’ve added some routes from the East Atlanta Village and back. The route I ran/walk last night was Cabbagetown #1. Along the way I saw the running pack that runs from Milltown Arms (no website? Why people, why?) in Cabbagetown and kicked myself forgetting about that group, not that I need another running group that ends in a bar. :)

Bang! Bang! You’re Dead
With the 4th of July now being ten nights in the past the pops I heard around 10pm last night started to sound more like gunfire than fireworks. Not knowing how far away the noises were generated I was hesitant to call the police, especially since the noises lasted no more than a few minutes. There are many days I wish that I didn’t have these concerns. For as much as love living in large cities I sometimes harken back to the days when I never thought about gunfire, and didn’t rely on owning a home alarm system.

Suffering From A Bit Of “Old Man” Syndrome
As much as I wanted to go out and party while listening to my favorite local country act National Grain play at The EARL I just couldn’t. I was back from my run in plenty of time to shower and rest before heading out, but the thought of going out, drinking and then returning home no earlier than 1am on a work night proceeding a big day of work just seemed ill-advised.

I’m not thrilled with my decision, but at least I am well rested.

The same will probably not be true tomorrow as I am planning on making a trip to Flatiron (can’t find a website for them either) tonight for the hash happy hour, and then a later trip to The EARL for some good old fashion live music.

Argh, My PDA Is Eating My Calendar!!!
Yesterday I went to check on my Chicago flights in my PDA’s calendar. Much to my surprise when I looked in the calendar app there was no entry for a flight to Chicago. However, when I did a search using the Find app a record showing the flight was returned. When I tried to enter a new record for the flight, it didn’t show up either! I am planning on getting rid of this PDA when I upgrade my cell phone when my contract is up in August. However, I’ll need this information before I can do so, and the process of transferring information especially when I’m not 100% of the accuracy of the data scares me. Perhaps it’s time to invest in a Moleskin?

I Guess There Was Supposed To Be A Title Here…

What Can I Say, I Love It When I Hear My Name Called Out
Last night while out running I heard someone shout out “Paulie.” I believe I heard the person say he was Oliver (reader, and blogger?). I was dead tired (after two miles?) and not wearing my prescription glasses, so Oliver if it was you forgive me for not recognizing you immediately.

Try As I May, Try As I Might
The alarm goes off for the first time at 5am. I manage to turn it off and ignore it until the second alarm sounds at 5:30am. Even on the best of mornings when I’ve gotten enough sleep and get out of bed immediately I cannot seem to get out of the house before 6:30am. Hrmph. I guess there are too many things for me to accomplish — shave, shower, update iPod, pack “gym” bag — before I leave the house, but I remember being able to do these things, sans iPod update, in a much shorter time. Hell, I used the be at the gym for aerobics for a 6:30am class back in the old days.

Why It’s Good To Be My Friend
If you like going to plays and concerts it’s good to be close to me. In fits of optimism I usually purchase two tickets to said events. Currently have a pair of tickets to the following event with no idea who will be joining me

  • “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” (Alliance Theatre)
  • The 2006-2007 season at the Hertz Theater
  • Sufjan Stevens (The Fox)
  • plans to give away any extra tickets to the Louvre exhibit when it makes it to the High Museum

Is this a pathetic attempt to get people to like me? Hell fucking yeah it is! :)

Of All The Nights To Have An Earl-y Show…
I’m trying hard to be good and get my daily/nightly exercise. As I said earlier in this post I was out huffing and puffing around the Highlands last night. Because of this I missed the Camera Obscura at The EARL last night. Unlike most shows at The EARL, this was an early show (the venue was double-booked) so I couldn’t get home from running and shower in time to make it to the show. Too bad, I would have liked to see Camera Obscura. Anyone out there reading this make it?

On The Outside Looking In

Not Quite What I Had Hoped
At lunch yesterday I meandered over to Target to pick up some more clothes for working out. While there I also picked up a copy of the new Thom Yorke album “The Eraser.” Let’s just say that it’s a little too electronica for my tastes and the only thing it erased was $10 out of my wallet. I guess I should have spent the $13 to buy my pick of the week instead…

This Is Your Brain On Hashing
Want to see what happens when you become a hasher?

You walk out of your office building and you see blobs of flour which go unnoticed by others in the Universe. Not only that, you also get a sudden urge to follow the flour “just to see where the trail went.”

This Is Your Brain On Hashing

Furthermore, if you live in Atlanta you log on to the Atlanta Hash website to see which one of the many hashes used the territory near your office without you even knowing until you walked out the door on your way to get lunch.

On-on!

Not Quite What I Had Hoped< Part 2
A group of my friends met up as scheduled last night at The Highlander. The premise was to have a nerd session about blogging, laptops were brought and relatively quickly put away due to bandwidth and lack of electrical outlet issues, causing the event to become a social. Don’t get me wrong, I love sitting around and drinking, but I was hoping to get more out of this gathering than I did. Oh well, it was a nice try.

I guess it’s back to my old school methods for learning, reading books and stealing from the Internets. No worries, I’ve got sometime because I don’t have much going on.

The Corned Beef Never Disappoints!
I thought I had missed it because Corned Beef Sunday is usually the first Sunday of the month. However, last night I received an email alerting me that this Sunday will be a Corned Beef Sunday at Twain’s in Decatur. You know I’ll be there, won’t you join me? Be forewarned the that email also stated that there will be no Corned Beef Sunday in August (I guess that they will be vacationing in the Catskills that month), so your next shot at the meat will be in September.

Baby (Elephant) Steps
From my office I’ve mapped out a nice, somewhat hilly, somewhat scary because of traffic, four-mile loop for running. Yesterday I laced up the sneakers at about 4:30pm and struggled mightily. I don’t know if it was heat, humidity, smog, lack of running, being sick the day before, carrying too much weight, or some combination there of, but I felt awful.

I seem to have difficulties taking deep breaths, it’s like I always have a loogie lodged within my throat. I am seriously considering seeing a Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist to see if my concerns are warranted. Anyone in the Atlanta blogosphere have a recommendation for a doctor? I’d appreciated it.

I’ll be giving it all another shot tonight at George’s. Yes, two consecutive days of exercise!!! Remember that even the longest journey begins with one step…

Calculator Watches, Laptops, And Beer… Oh My!

Get Out Your Laptops Kids!
Got nothing on your agenda tonight? Feeling kinda nerdy? Why not join the Atlanta Blogging Revolution at The Highlander for some beer and tech problem solving? We’ll be meeting up around 7pm and should be pretty easy to spot — look for the people with laptops.

So far I have the following two problems to conquer

  • I have loaded up the Gravatar plugin and know how to enable it, but don’t know how to set up my comments page to make it look nice
  • I need a calendar plugin suggestion

If you know the solution to these then I suggest that you join us. At night’s end you’ll feel like you’ll be able to hold bolts of energy in your bare hand

An Interesting Old Utility Box In East Atlanta

Meet The Hashers Go Down In Flames
We met up at the Inman Park / Old 4th Ward location of Johnny’s Pizza last night for a game of trivia. Were we the team wearing the “I (heart) Trivia Guy” t-shirts? Not no, but hell no! We’d never stoop that low, especially for the guy who loves to put our team down using his microphone. Last night his joke was to call out our score seventy points lower than it really was. Oh Snap!

For as shitty as we played in the first half we managed to rally to be near the money just before the final question. The category for the final question was “Collectibles.” I went on the record by declaring that the answer would be “Thomas Kinkade” before even hearing the question. I was wrong of course. For those who wish to play along, here was the final question.

Name the Beanie Baby animal associated with the following four names

  • Brownie (I’ll give you a hint that this was not former FEMA chief Michael Brown)
  • Legs
  • Chocolate
  • Squealer

The answer is posted in the comments.

We bet all our points and got two of the four. Unfortunately we needed to get all four right in order to get points, so we finished with nil (see I learned something from that World Cup, oh wait I also learned how to heatbutt someone and become a National Goat).

Big Tuesday For Music
Remember those weeks I whined about not having anything to pick? Well, this week will not be one of those.

Without further adieu I pick Soul Asylum’s release of “The Silver Lining” as my pick for this week.

Oh, I’m kidding… While I liked Soul Asylum back in the day, there are a few more significant releases out today.

Everybody’s favorite indie rocker Sufjan Stevens releases “The Avalanche: Outtakes And Extras From The Illinois Album”. A few things keep me from selecting this release as tops. One, is there a peak in Illinois tall enough to create an avalanche? Two, if these songs are so great, why didn’t they make it on to last year’s album?

Tom Yorke releases the much anticipated “The Eraser” today. Who’s Tom Yorke you ask? Perhaps you’ll recognize the name of the band in which he performs — Radiohead. Now you know why this release is noteworthy.

Having said all that I’m going with Muse’s release of “Black Holes And Revelations” as my “CD Pick of the Week” this week. The two cuts I’ve heard are both strong (they supposedly streamed the whole album over at their MySpace page but I think I failed the MySpace Entrance Exam when I answered “the 60’s” to the question “What decade were you born in?”). I’d also be willing to go see them in concert at the Tabernacle if not for the ridiculous “convenience charges” and “processing fees” tacked on to the ticket price by The Man. Perhaps it’s just as well because I’d probably get nabbed buying an underage girl a beer in an undercover sting operation.

With All That Sleep, How Can I Be Tired?

The Site Remains The Same
I made many attempts this weekend at updating the code which runs this site and adding some nifty plugins — all efforts failed. Oh goody, now I have things to discuss at the first Nerdfest meetup at the Highlander tomorrow night.

It Was Like Seeing An Old Friend
After struggling with code on Friday I received a text message from my good friend Laura (”I Know That Trick”). The conversation persuaded me to head down to East Point and meet up with the Hash Happy Hour at The Corner Tavern.

As an aside, I am really displeased with Google’s search results for businesses. I searched for “Corner Tavern Atlanta” and it returned links to many sites, none of which were the actual site for the establishment. Further, when I click on the maps link it will give me all information about the establishment except for its website. Anyone have a better solution?

Down at The Corner Tavern I saw an old friend from my Gravity dart throwing days. She’s now working down at The Corner Tavern. Who knew?

Why I Need An Agenda
Saturday was a series of starts and stops for me. On no fewer than three occasions I forced myself to leave the house to do something which did not involve eating or drinking (take photos, run errands, find fun things) only to return home shortly thereafter. I felt like I was a kid on Summer vacation again.

I did manage to get gas for the lawn mower and mow the front “lawn” and do some cleanup of my curb. I think that my mower needs a tune up before I attempt the mess that is my back yard, so that might have to be put off until next weekend.

This is the only shot I took on Saturday worth anything, and even at that I’m none to pleased with the harshness of the shadows…

Why Do My Legs Hurt? Oh Yeah…

Run Paulie, Run!
Well my noon run started somewhere around 4pm. Eventhough we have a fitness room with a shower in our office building I thought it best to wait until later in the afternoon to run. It was the best worst run I have ever done because it reminded me how out of shape I really am. The run lasted about four miles (with a few spots walked and convenient missing of traffic signals in order to catch my breath) and way too many minutes. It felt like I was starting at square one again but at least it’s a start.

The bag is packed again today, but I think that I’ll drive ITP before doing my run to avoid some Friday afternoon traffic.

Shhh, What’s That Sound?
It’s the sound of the Braves bullpen collapsing, yet again. Unfortunately for me and those that were rooting for Cincinnati the Braves managed to pull out the victory in extra innings.

Two nights, two games, three unspeakable errors. Last night I saw two major league outfielders drop routine fly balls. I swear it was like being at a Little League game. The night before I saw an outfielder run up for a ball and have it go under his glove. What the hell is going on? This is some of the sloppiest baseball I have ever witnessed.

Shhh, What’s That Sound? Part 2
Growl, Growl, Growler! Last night whilst killing time in Mr Lee’s, okay Candler Park, Grocery I found a growler (64 fluid ounces) of Rogue American Amber Ale. A growler!!! Anyone want to guess what I’ll be drinking this weekend?

There was supposed to be a picture of the growler inserted here, but after getting home from the extra-inning game last night I forgot to bring the camera into the house.

TV Worth Watching? TV Worth Watching Not.
It seems that my tv viewing has gone down recently. In an effort to rectify this I undertook the task of watching two reality based shows which have just started their season.

Big Brother has started season 7, which is also an “All Star” season. I made the effort to watch Big Brother way back in season 1 and absolutely hated the show. The only reason to attempt another go is to hang out with my friends Stacy and Phil who have assured me that the show is far better. I got to see the last half of last night’s episode and the jury is still out.

Rock Star: Supernova is an absolute train wreck. No, it’s an absolute boring train wreck. Even with the possibility of the dude from Atlanta getting booted from the show I couldn’t stand to stay tuned. Sorry Barb, you’re on your own with this show.

Fritti’s Got It’s World Cup Swerve On
My drive past Fritti was a little different this morning. Instead of seeing this scene (usually less blurry than this would lead you to believe)

Atlanta Scavenger Hunt -

I saw that they have taken down all flags with exception of France and Portugal Italy (surprised nobody called me out for my error, perhaps you thought it was intentional since I am not a soccer fan…).

Those are the two teams left, correct? :)

This One Might Be A Weakend
There is not a whole lot on my schedule for this weekend. I’m contemplating going to The EARL to see Tenement Halls tonight, however it is a free show and I highly dislike free shows…

Sunday is a Black Sheep day. It’s our annual Bastaard Run in celebration of Bastille Day. I have a feeling that I’ll need whatever is left in that growler come Sunday evening.

Buy Me Some Peanuts And Crack Addicts

I Saw Some Fireworks Last Night
Although they weren’t the kind I was expecting to see.

I went to the Cardinals/Braves game but decided to leave the camera equipment in the car due to the sketchy weather forecast. Much to my surprise (and dismay) the only thing raining down once the game started were Braves runs. I left the game sometime in the sixth inning, I think that the score was 10-1 when I departed.

As I laid around the house when I got home I heard the real fireworks bursting in the distance.

Promoting The Hood
Yesterday I received a nice email alerting me to a theater group located in East Atlanta. While I had never heard of Out of Hand Theater previously I am looking forward to attending some of their productions and have happily added them to the right hand galley under my East Atlanta Businesses heading.

Look Out! I’m About To Use The ‘T’ Word
You’ve read it all before, “I am tired of being fat!”. Today I start my tr, tr, training. *shudder* I’ve worn the running shoes and packed a bag to go out for a four mile run/walk/gasp/struggle at lunch. Of course it will be raining by then, but if I am going to be dedicated to losing weight for the weddings I’m` attending in September, and to run the Atlanta Half Marathon in a sub two-hour time again (not accomplished by me since 2001), I must start now.

Besides, if I start tr, tr, training today than I’ll feel guilty not packing workout clothes for my upcoming trips.

To all ye who wish to start a pool on my finishing time for this year’s half marathon I say “Let the wagering begin!” Shit, I’ll even start looking for a Web 2.0 app that will let you set up the pool online.

Back To The Ted Again
Once again weather permitting I’ll be down at Turner Field. Tonight my plans are to attend the Reds/Braves game with my friend Mike. Even if the weather was to be perfect the camera gear would be staying at home because tonight will be a laid back game. Hell, I might even drink a beer tonight.

What Am I? Chopped Liver?
I found out today, through Maigh’s blog that my friends Stacey and Andy have had their first child. I still think that Stacey could have held out until Jully 22nd. Maybe they were going to wait until my birthday to tell me so I’d think that the child was born on the same day as me? Man, I have such great friends! :)

What A Long Strange Trip It Was

With the exception of 2003 I have done something on the Peachtree Road Race for the past ten years. The years 1996-2002 were as a number-wearing participant (I even made it into the Group 1A timegroup back then), while 2004-2006 were as a participant in the hashers’ Peachtree Pub Crawl Team.

Drunken Paulie, Hidden Funster
The day started early, much like they did back in the days when I ran the race. I parked my car near my final destination and walked up 10th Street toward the Marta station. Along the way I had encounter #1, my friends Dave and Melodie were stopped in traffic, saw me, and called out my name. Weird. I jumped off Marta at Lindbergh and hoofed it up to Loco’s on Peachtree which was the start of the Pub Crawl.

Even I admit to be surprised how easily the first to beers went down by 8am yesterday. It was to be a long, hot day.

Encounter #2 occurred as “heckled people on” while standing near Loco’s. I saw one of my old roommate’s father and brother-law run by. Oddly, my former roommate Tom was nowhere to be seen.

The Pub Crawl jumped onto Peachtree somewhere around 8am. We moved at a blistering pace (for us) until reaching the Publix donut bagel stop. Bagels? WTF? What happened to the wonderful glazed donuts?

We moved along toward our beer stop at Peachtree Battle beer stop

Peachtree Pub Crawl @ Peachtree Battle

After consuming at Peachtree Battle we congo-lined our way up Peachtree before incorrectly pulling off the road to drink near Houston’s. For some reason there was no beer stop there this year.

Back on the road we hobbled our way to Mellow Mushroom where we sampled lovely beverages from Terrapin and Sweetwater.

The next few miles are a bit of a blur. I remember getting a beer at the next beer stop, one more at Jock’s n Jill’s a crossing the finish line with miraculous 3:07 time.

I awoke later in the day with all intentions of taking the camera out for some fireworks, but alas Mother Nature’s fury squelched that idea.

Not Exactly The Fireworks We Wanted

Mother Nature’s lightning show is all over Atlanta right now. I wonder if they ever cancel or postpone fireworks shows, and if so when do they shoot them off? I mean it’s not like they can be returned, right?
