What To Do When The Calendar Is Empty?

I’ve cleared my calendar for no other reason than I think it will do me some good to pack this weekend full of Paulie Time. My head has been completely out of whack this week and I need to figure out what the hell I am doing with my life.

Things I Won’t Be Doing This Weekend
- seeing “Elliott, A Soldier’s Fugue” on the Hertz Stage of the Alliance Theater
- making any commitments to be anywhere with anyone
- trying to figure out why women continually find me “unsuitable”
- answering my phone (most likely)

Things I Will Be Doing This Weekend
- drinking beer (just like every other weekend)
- watching Season 1 of The Office on DVD
- working on this blog
- photography
- grilling out on my bbq

No Ticky, No Ballgame
It didn’t rain as expected, but it didn’t matter because my plans to see the Mets / Braves game fell through last night. Fearing either driving rain or a chilly evening I decided not to go down to the stadium alone. But that’s not to say that I didn’t have a plan “B”…

(Now that I read that Mets’ pitcher Pedro Martinez is done for the remainder of the year due to a torn calf muscle it appears that they might uphold the Braves fine tradition of having an incredible season only to be knocked out in the first round of the playoffs.)

Ain’t That A Kick In The Pants
With no baseball in my immediate future I headed to Decatur to join Meet The Hashers for Team Trivia at Raging Burrito.

It was a lot like the old days of trivia — Meet The Hashers was playing, Jim (the old Taco Mac host) has apparently returned from a 2+ year stint in Charlotte, we were drinking beer (although I had none), and at the end of the first half we were not in first place.

I had a good laugh early on when the first sports question was “In which sport does a player have to either bounce or touch the ball to the ground every eleven yards?” Having just signed up for Australian Rules Football and scanning its rules I knew the answer immediately. Unfortunately, the question wound up being a multiple-choice question so most other teams answered it correctly as well.

Oh, Meet The Hashers went on to win first place. Just like the old days indeed…

This is where I was, I am no longer there. I already miss the four-minute “commute” that I had from the hotel room to the hotel lobby.

The Difference Between “We” And “I”
Oh Billy, how could you be so naive? It was very nice of CBS to include the “love at first sight” moment in its Survivor opening recap last night.

However, I am very disappointed that CBS abandoned its Great Social Experiment so soon into the season. Sure it was a load of crap, but at least it was different.

Am I Here? No, But I Am Somewhere…

The orange and blue here in Auburn just don’t feel as friendly to me as they did last week when I kicked around Gainesville. Maybe the people here need an attitude adjustment like that used by this (former) University of Florida professor. (for those who cannot follow the link, there is video of this professor who appears to be stoned while lecturing)

I am sitting in another overly-air-conditioned hotel room, sneezing and brewing a cup of coffee to combat the chill. Currently I am proud of myself for not only correctly guessing how much water should be poured into the mini-coffeemaker, but also for troubleshooting the reason it would not turn on. And this is all occurring in one the better hotels in which I have stayed…

I will say that one good thing about waking up in the Central Time Zone is that I feel more productive because it feels like I’ve gotten up so much earlier.

Rain? WTF!!!
What is it with me going to Braves’ games and Atlanta getting rain? We haven’t had much rain in days and on the evening I have a ticket there is a 40% chance of thunderstorms. Further, this is the only day this week for which rain is predicted. Dammit!

And yes I am aware that the Braves have been handing the Mets their asses this week, but I have been waiting fourteen years to gloat…

License To Steal?
At the end of yesterday’s career fair my co-worker and I walked into the parking lot and had an encounter with an older guy that we had talked to earlier. In the parking lot he was complaining that someone had stolen the pewter Auburn license plate from the front of his car. And here I was worrying that my (Alabama Crimson Tide / Georgia Bulldog) red Accord with the University of Florida license plate surround was going to be a target for vandalism…

ITP Flickr Pic
None today…

Eventhough the weather in Auburn was beautiful I didn’t get a chance to walk the campus and shoot. The career fair at Auburn ran from 3pm-7pm CDT and after having dinner and then a beer at the local Mellow Mushroom it was time for me to crash. Today I’ll be interviewing students and then jumping into the Jackmobile to head back to the Eastern Time Zone.

If I happen to shoot anything interesting between now and my first interview at 8:30am CDT I will update this space.

Here you are, and two shots no less…

Smile Pretty For The Nice People
Today I find myself headed out for my final college recruiting road trip of the season. Today’s destination: Auburn University. While there I will be doing my best to recruit intelligent students and feed the football team as much fresh spinach straight from the bag as they can eat. Football players need big muscles and spinach worked for Popeye, that’s logic that no Auburn football player can refute.

The Tin Drum No Longer Resembles The Tin Drum
One of the few chain restaurants at which I will eat is Tin Drum Asia Cafe (nfws?). My normal order is called the “Tin Drum” consisting of spicy chicken chunks with fresh spinach leaves serverd over steamed white rice. Since I have not eaten there in a while it was what I ordered yesterday. When I received my order I was somewhat surprised to see that they have substituted broccoli for the spinach leaves. I know about the whole e. coli problem discovered recently, but I thought for sure that things would be back to normal by now.

I tried to go out last night and snap photos, but as I drove around nothing struck me as particularly interesting. No matter, Atlanta blogger Lori has a much more appropriate photo for today in her Flickr stream

A Show You Should See Tonight Because I Can’t
Tonight at the Variety Playhouse there is a big show when Little Steven’s Underground Garage show rolls into town. The headliner is 1960’s rock legends The Zombies, but I would suggest that you get there early enough to see The Mooney Suzuki. You have probably heard some of The Mooney Suzuki’s music being played on television commercials and didn’t even know it.

Not One, But Two Birthdays To Celebrate
A quick look at Google shows that today marks their eighth birthday. September 27th also marks the birthday of my friend Randy who is considerably older. Oh wait, I mentioned Randy’s 40th birthday party on Monday. My aging mind must have slipped, Randy you might want to prepare yourself for similiar disfunctions. And eventhough you are a vegetarian you may want to stay away from the spinach — you are no Auburn football player you know…

Does Anyone Know “Amity”?

In a glaring oversight I failed to give credit to Amity for turning me on to accuradio.com (yesterday’s “Website Of The Day”). I humbly apologize for my fuckup.

Old? Who’s Old?
Okay, I may live to regret this, that is if I manage to survive, but at the urging of my good friend Darren I have signed up to play the last five games in the Atlanta Australian Rules Football League. If all goes to plan I will be the most loveable mistfit playing for the Decatur Devils. At least I know that I can still drink with the young kids.

The Race Isn’t Nearly As Amazing When You Don’t Watch
Having gotten back into The Amazing Race last season I have been unable to watch this season’s episodes in a timely fashion. Even worse, as I mentioned in one of yesterday’s comments I was unable to record Sunday’s episode and CBS’ Innertube is not showing the entire episode.

I know that the hottie South Carolina cheerleaders were eliminated, but I still want to watch the episode to see what transpired.

I’ve only missed one episode, but I feel so far out of the loop already. Man I love bitorrent!

I’m Soon To Be A Member Of The Redundancy Of The Office Club
When the American version of The Office launched a couple of seasons ago I attempted to watch, but didn’t much care for it. I was a huge fan of the British version and felt that the American version didn’t compare. Here’s what I wrote on March 25, 2005

Give up NBC. Stop making, er remaking, comedies that aired on the BBC. Last Fall you tried Coupling, it tanked, and now The Office? Before watching the only two minutes I could stomach of last night’s pilot I already had it in my mind that I would hate it. I know, that’s not very objective but I am not a (professional) TV critic, nor do I play one on TV. I was right. Steve Carell, sorry but you are no Ricky Gervais (who btw - once attempted to be a “rock star” go here to find out more about his band Seona Dancing).

After multiple people have told me how great they think the show is I am ready to give it another chance. In order to do it right, I have ordered Season 1 on DVD and will get Season 2 soon. As I attempt to catch up I will record Season 3 on my DVR.

Did I scare you yesterday? I didn’t mean to do so. As the kids say, I was merely “keepin’ it real.” Here’s a happy little Austrian fellow to make life all better.

Und Why Not Have A Beer?

Better pictures will resume when I get around to taking more photos.

CD Pick Of The Week
Not a whole lot released today registers on the Paulie-o-Meter for music. The easy pick would be to go for The Lemonheads. Evan Dando has gotten the band back together (and replaced some members) to release the first The Lemonheads record in quite some time. Since I desire to be easy, I shall pick The Lemonheads release of “The Lemonheads” (you would think that after all the time they had to think of a name they could have come up with something better) as my “CD Pick Of The Week.” Tune in next week for a much more compelling segment….

btw- I am all for actually hearing and reviewing CDs if any of you out there has contacts or demos you wish to send me.

Wine, Women & Weddings

[UPDATE @1:05pm - No comments? Has anyone seen this today?]

Not all of these will be covered today…

Colorado Beer, Oh Boy! (No Music For Me!)
My friend Jill returned from Colorado with a car stocked with quality beers from the state. She had the fantastic idea to invite a group of us over to have a night of Colorado beer tasting. I had the bad idea to have many twelve-ounce tastes.

I wound up missing both shows I mentioned on Friday (The Long Winters, Magnolia Electric Co.). If anyone out there went to either of these shows I’d like to know what I missed.

Hello Old Age My New Foe
On Friday before heading to Jill’s I stopped in to Ella Guru, one of the better used CD stores in Atlanta. While there I picked up Atlanta-band Snowden’s “Anti-Anti”, a promo release of Yo La Tengo’s “I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Kick Your Ass”, and Muse’s “Black Holes And Revelations”. Normally I don’t trust my memory so I drag my iPod in with me everytime I go into a CD store. Last night when I realized that I already owned the Muse CD, I wish I had done so on Friday.

Next stop, Senility Island.

Piedmont Park Wedding #2 — Complete!
This weekend my friends Laura and Bob tied the knot at the Park Tavern. Because the reception was also at Park Tavern I hoped that I would be able to drink some of their microbrew at the reception. Unfortunately, this was not the case — however a really decent red wine was provided so I made sure the get my fill of that instead.

Post-wedding many of us headed over to The Highlander (sound familiar?) to meet up with the end of Saturday’s Atlanta hash.

Following the hash ending I headed over to a party to help celebrate the impending 40th birthday of my friend Randy. Welcome to old age buddy.

You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown
Lately I’ve been compared to Charlie Brown. Fuck that! I am much more like Eeyore thankyouverymuch. Charlie Brown is a simpleton bufoon who manages to bungle even the simplest tasks; Eeyore is an intelligent donkey who is depressed, yet thoroughly overjoyed when people remember his birthday. Get it right…

About fifteen years or so ago there was a comedian who had a bit in which his girlfriend had just broken up with him. When he asked her why, her reply was that she felt that he lacked confidence. “Oh, and this is really going to help that!” he retorted.

I have said it before and I will reiterate, confidence is like work experience — when you have none no one wants you, but you have to have someone want you in order to gain it. Funny how that works, no?

I think you are #1…

You're #1

I’m Much More Certain About This…
My East Atlanta Deadbeat Dads are most certainly going to lose their first game. I have a player in tonight’s Monday Night Football game (Alge Crumpler) but I am soooo far behind (by 39 points by my count) that I think that it’s a moot point. One of the reasons I’ve disliked playing fantasy sports in the past occurred this weekend. My starting QB (Eli Manning) was playing against my starting Defense (Seattle). It’s such a quandary to root for one against the other.

As it turns out it really didn’t matter. I found out about fifteen minutes into Sunday’s second tier of games that another one of my starting players (Donte Stallworth) was scratched from the Eagles’ game. He was listed as “probable” up until game time. Arrgh!

Maybe I should try and acquire the Burger King, he seems to play really well in those commercials…

Brain Fart Friday

Mother Nature Is A Bitch
While in Florida I wanted walk around campus snapping photos of my alma mater and Mother Nature decided to spoil that by raining on me. As I came back to Atlanta the weather improved dramatically, but I couldn’t go out and play because I had to work. I hoped that the beautiful weather would hold up for this weekend. Instead, when I checked out the weather forecast for this weekend I saw that it is supposed to rain each day. Arrgh!

Need A Good Concert Recommendation?
I can give you two for tonight. First, The Long Winters are playing Smith’s Olde Bar. Or, you could go see Magnolia Electric Co. play at The EARL. I’m not sure that I will be able to make it to either show, but they both should be worth seeing.

TV Worth Watching?
The Fall TV season has started and I’ve seen two episodes of Survivor so far. One thing I’ve learned from my many seasons of Survivor watching is that I rarely care about the people who get booted off early in the season. I guess Billy was just too metal for his Latino brethren. And who didn’t see his departure coming quickly? Rock on, Billy. Rock on!

And Just To Prove It’s Brain Fart Friday
I just went into the breakroom to get some coffee and make a cup of oatmeal. I placed my cup under the hot water dispenser and then accidentally pressed the button to make a full pot of coffee. I had to scramble to get something under the coffee pot hot water dispenser before hot water spilled everywhere.

ITP Returns ITP

Back in the ATL and if this morning is any indication, I am completely caught up on sleep.

As Smoove D correctly identified in the comments yesterday I was driving a Chevy Cobalt on my trip to Florida. As you may expect, tooling around UF’s campus in this beaut didn’t exaclty help me pick up the girls, but I am used to that feeling down there because when I was a student I drove a 1988 Hyundai Excel hatchback (keep in mind this was during the years 1989-1991).

Down With CAPS LOCK!!!
I can’t tell you how many times I have inadvertently hit the “CAPS LOCK” key on my laptop when meaning to depress the “A” key. Why does the “CAPS LOCK” key still exist? Is it really necessary?

I am not the only one with this problem, there is a guy who has started the blog CAPSoff who is trying to start a campaign to remove the “CAPS LOCK” key from the standard keyboard.

ITP Flickr Pic
Another crappy cellphone pic today. This one is a picture from Leonardo’s by the Slice on University Av in Gainesville, FL. When I was a student I ate a Leonardo’s often. The reason for this is also pictured here…. the empty container in this picture contained pizza dough rolls which were smothered with garlic butter. Damn that shit is good.

Leonardo's By The Slice

In a funny “Small World” coincidence, I have found out that Leonardo’s is owned by Atlanta blogger Hannah Beth’s cousin.

(CC * 2) = (G + $20) [at least on the street]
Due to major schedule crunches and the inability to acquire a girlfried or convince others that they should not be running at George’s I found myself with an extra ticket to the Sufjan Stevens show last night.

Rarely will I do business with ticket scalpers, but I figured if I could recoup some of my losses that would be better than nothing. After negotiating with a polite young man on the street corner we settled on a deal where I gave him my pair of tickets on row CC in the loge and I got his single ticket on row G in the balcony plus $20. Because I figured that this concert was going to be a laid back affair and that few people would be standing, I figured downgrading my seat and pocketing $20 would be a decent compromise. I was right.

If you go to a Sufjan Stevens concert expecting a live Rock Show you will be disappointed. You have to go to his concerts expecting more of a symphony atmosphere (there are fifteen people on stage playing a variety of instruments), even if they do all come out wearing buttefly wings like they did last night. (As a side note I was disappointed that I missed the concert tour when they dressed like cheerleaders.) The most excitement during the show were the two unexpected loud buzzes which emitted from the sound system causing the musicians to wince in pain and the show to temporarily come to a halt while the problem was fixed.

Overall I enjoyed the show, however I will admit that while I will continue to purchase Stevens’ music, I will probably never go to another of his live shows.

The Sun Is Orange, The Sky Is Blue

Unless is downpours like a mutha all day long like it did yesterday. Unfortunately, that meant that I was unable to walk the campus taking pictures as I hoped I’d be able to.

Somebody Should Force A Name Change
I admit it, for a long time I have had a dirty pleasure known as “eating at Taco Bell.” Yesterday was one of those days where I ate a very late lunch (4pm) (@Leonardo’s by the slice — YUM!) so l wasn’t very hungry at dinner time; I ran out for a small bite to eat around 9pm.

Recently Taco Bell’s food and service has been awful even by Taco Bell standards. Therefore I am starting a petition to make Taco Bell change the name of all of their restaurants to Predictably Bad. Anyone with me?

Now that I think of it, I should have driven over and seen if Burrito Brothers Taco Co was still open…

My Crazy Rental Car
I meant to mention this yesterday… The rental car I am tooling around in is possibly the worst I have ever had, at least in terms of features. It is a Chevy Pieceashit (or something like that) and according to the Enterprise rental office guy, I was “upgraded” to this car (I’d hate to see the car I was originally supposed to get).

Features Not Found In this Car

  • electric locks
  • electric windows
  • cassette player or audio-in (which makes my iPod less useful)
  • cruise control (which would be nice for a six-hour drive)
  • center console on which I can rest an arm (also nice for a long drive)

Oddly however, the car does have automatically controlled lights and an engine computer which displays a lot of interesting information about the car’s gas mileage and oil depletion. Go figure…

ITP Flickr Pic
This is a crappy picture, but when you want to capture the beauty of the 2-for-1 happy hour and all you have available is a camera phone you just have use what you have

I Love Florida Happy Hours

The Agony Is Not In The Feet, It’s In The Vocal Cords
You would think that after standing on my feet for seven hours that my dogs would be barking all night long. However, barking is about the last thing I am able to do today because the constant effort to talk loudly enough to communicate in a basketball arena filled with people has strapped my vocal cords.

No karaoke for Paulie, but really, that’s a good thing.

Morten Anderson? Really? Morten Anderson?
The Falcons have done many things right so far this season, kicking field goals has not been one of them. Yesterday, the Falcons resigned Morten Anderson, who is currently 46-years old and hasn’t been in the league since 2004. Why do I think that they found him working at a Taco Bell?

Orange And Blue Are Beautiful Together

Today I find myself in a city very different than the one I left fifteen years ago. That city is Gainesville, Florida. Actually, I have been back as near as two years ago, but things seem to be remarkably different from then as well. I was hoping to take a ton of pictures when I got down here, but a late departure and a forecast of 80% rain for my stay may mean that I get skunked.

Who Else Needs A Division Champion T-Shirt?
It’s finally official, my beloved NY Mets have snapped the Braves fourteen-year stranglehold over the National League East. I am sure that most of you are hoping that the Mets with the same amount of playoff success that the Braves have, but I am hoping to see them return to the World Series for the first time since 2000.

At first I thought “hmm, they have an opossum” and then I saw the sign that identified this as an albino raccoon. I still have my doubts.

Dewey Wins!
Hehe, this was the passage that I wrote last night describing my second week in fantasy football…

East Atlanta Deadbeat Dads Now Have As Many Losses As Wins
My DD’s Fantasy Football team put up a good struggle. In fact they were in the lead by almost two points at the end of Sunday. The only problem was that I had no players in Monday night’s game whereas my opponent had one. Dammit!

This morning I woke up and found out that since Pittsburgh got shut out last night my East Atlanta Deadbeat Dads have actually won! Woo Hoo!

CD Pick Of The Week
Another big week of releases are upon us — nineteen titles are listed today by Metacritic.

Of these two stand out, The Zutons and Ben Kweller.

Because I really loved Kweller’s last effort, I am going to see Kweller when he comes to Atlanta and plays the Variety Playhouse, and few of you seem to know who the hell he is, I will happily pick his release of “Ben Kweller” as my CD Pick Of The Week.

Babies And Brewhouse Oh Boy (And Girl)!
My good friend Tamara was in Atlanta this weekend (from Canada no less!) on her way to Charlotte this week. Like we did so many times in the past a group of us met up at Brewhouse in L5P. Unlike the past, there were beings in the group who didn’t even exist when we you to drink all night; hell they didn’t even exist until this year.

As a forty-one year old bachelor who is uncertain if he will ever find someone to marry him, nevermind bear his children, it’s kind of weird to watch my friends grow up around me.

Wave Hello To The Nice People

Piedmont Park Wedding #1 — Done!
Saturday was a beautiful day to hold an outdoor wedding on the dock at Lake Clara Meer in Piedmont Park. That’s where I was Saturday afternoon for my former-employee-and-current-friend Mitsy’s (or, Misty, as she was called by the pastor a couple of times) wedding. The reception was held in Piedmont Park’s Magnolia Hall and was fantastic. May I suggest that if you plan your reception there to include the gits bar. Grits with shrimp, sausage, and duck, then topped with mushrooms is delicious!

Speaking of sausage… I was forced to go into my Suit Wayback Machine in order to find a suit that didn’t make me look like I was ten pounds of sausage stuffed into a casing meant for five-pounds. The suit I chose looked great and fit really well. The problem was that it fit really well (and is two sizes larger than I wish to be).

Post wedding I met up with Tamara and Sandy at the Highlander for a few beverages and to watch my Florida Gators squeak out a 21-20 victory over Tennessee. Not only was I the only one in the Highlander in a suit and tie, I also think that I was the only one who gave a rat’s ass about the game’s outcome.

Und Now We Act Like Fake Germans
On Sunday I headed to North Georgia with my friends Stacy and Phil to do a photostroll in Georgia’s Capital of Kitsch, Helen.

It was a nice day for a drive, and except for the occassional police sighting (I’m still skittish from Colorado), it was a good drive.

While in Helen I realized that it had been eleven years since I had last been there — on a weekend bender with Tamara (see how everything ties in) and Bill when the Braves won the World Series (it’s real easy to remember because they only won once).

Eleven years later, Helen hasn’t changed a bit.

The three of us (Stacy, Phil and myself because we are now back to the present) walked around taking photos of everything in the town (excluding fat tourists) and bears.

If you are looking for restaurant recommendations I can tell you where you may not want to go. We stopped for lunch and beers at the Over the Top Bar & Grill. After getting the “house brew” which tasted an awful lot like Miller (Lite?) and then waiting an eternity for our food to arrive, my plate of chicken wings were cold (tepid at best). Stacy’s onion rings suffered a similar fate and her BLT was toasted on one side. Phil’s salad was acceptable. When we called someone over to return the food they offered to “fix it”, which we declined, and then gave us a story about how the head cook wasn’t working and the guy making food was in the band that played the night before so he was working on only a few hours sleep. The establishment wound up comping all of the food. We walked out dissatisfied. A meal purchased later at some beer hall was better, although nothing to write home about.
