I Shall Not Call It Hallowe’en

It has become popular recently to return to the old style of spelling today’s holiday. I shall not do so, for me this holiday will always be spelled Halloween.

I don’t much care for Halloween any longer. I used to throw a party each year, but that started conflicting with other events so I’ve given up.

ITP Flickr Pic
Seven Halloweens ago my friends Stacey, Sandy, and Tamara came over to decorate my house for a party. This skeleton, which does a “pee dance” pose on the door to the bathroom, has not been taken down since.

To me this is pure comedy gold!

Who Needs Four Bands On A Weeknight? (or The Song Remains The Same)
Man, I think that live music is either out to kill me or prove that I am getting older.

Last night there were four bands on the bill at Variety Playhouse, Tilly And The Wall were the headliners. Of course the show started later than advertised, and by the time Tilly And The Wall took the stage it was nearly midnight.

The first band to take the stage was an all-girl Canadian band called Pony Up! If not for the fact that I thought that the lead singer was adorable I probably would have not liked the band. After a few songs each one sounded like the other and I grew bored.

Mew was the next band up. As the sound check was being performed I heard a guy next to me tell another guy “our guitars just arrived at the airport”. Keep this statement in mind… Mew, who has one big song on the radio now (99x was touting this show and if It’s On Sirius was still worth a shit I’d find out what the title is) and all the kids packed the theater to see their set. Mew’s sound is loud and polished, why they are not headlining their own tour confused me, and why they were second on this bill confused me further. Having said that Mew’s sound grew old to my old ears after about four songs and I was ready for something different.

Third up? The Black Keys Lips. Hey, there’s the guy who mentioned his guitar at the airport! I’m going to have to say it… they sound like a lousy Beatles cover band and I thought that they had the least talent of those to take the stage. My theory about the night’s performance order was that Mew and The Black Keys Lips got flip-flopped thanks to the delayed equipment. Further, buy the time these guys took the stage at least one-quarter of the audience had left the building. I’ll move on…

Finally, Tilly And The Wall… They came out in costumes, why not by the time they started it was Halloween. They were ready to rock, and I was about to catch a second-wind. I had only heard a few of Tilly And The Walls songs on Sirius so I wasn’t all that sure what to expect. As I had heard their percussion is supplied by a tap-dancing girl (there is one person who probably never worries about her weight) and it worked surprisingly well. I stuck around until about 12:20am when I had to remind myself that I was gainfully-employed and needed to be awake at a fairly respectable hour today. I liked what I heard although I started to wonder if like the bands which proceeded them I would have grown tired of their sound.

Maybe I am getting old…. Nah!!!!

Music Two Nights In A Row?
Maybe. Tonight I am going to head down to Center Stage to see if I can get a ticket to see Secret Machines. I haven’t pre-purchased a ticket because I didn’t want to feed the TicketBastard monster and can avoid it by purchasing a ticket at the box office. It’s a gamble to wait until the night of the show, but it’s a gamble I am willing to take for this show.

If for some reason I cannot get a ticket, I’ll might take the camera around midtown and do some night shooting. although as I look at the weather forecast it doesn’t look like it will be the best night to do so.

It Feels So Late

Welcome To STANDARD Time
If you live in parts the of Arizona that don’t know how to change the time on their clocks (congratulations to Indiana for finally figuring this out this year) you can skip this section.

By now you’ve figured out that the rest of the United States has pushed their clocks back one hour. What many have not figured out is that we have now entered Standard Time, that is to say we are no longer in Daylight Savings Time and therefore the abbreviation for the time (assuming an Eastern Time Zone) would be EST instead of EDT. Chalk this up as one of my many pet peeves but I cannot understand why some people cannot grasp this concept.

Did you also remember to do some of those critical things which should be done a couple of times of year like check to make sure you smoke detectors work (you do have smoke detectors, right?) and change their batteries?

Winning Ugly
Don’t get me wrong I am as happy as the next Gator fan that Florida managed to win on Saturday. However, even the most devout UGA fan will admit that this year’s Bulldog team is not good and I am here to say that they Gators are not that much better. And because of that, that is all I will say about this topic…

In other sports, I’ve heard that someone won the World Series this weekend. Color me one of the millions who failed to watch a single inning. *man these grapes are sour*

And finally in the world of sports…. Congratulations to the Atlanta Thrashers for going up to Buffalo and stopping the Sabres ten-game winning streak.

I’m Calling Shenanigans On The Amazing Race
Spoiler Alert….

C’mon, it seems a bit fishy to me that for the second time in three shows that Kentucky has been saved by not being eliminated on The Amazing Race.

Having said that I thought that last night’s episode contained a little bit of everything I love about the show. Team Alabama is #1 on my “I’d like to see them eliminated” list, followed very by Dude & the Bitch (Rob & Kimberly). I find it odd that there is no penalty for wrecking a vehicle in the race either. Perhaps the penalty for the Blondeshells was that their prize for winning the leg was a pair of scooters (laaaaame!!!)

I’ve Got A Problem…
I really need to learn that when I hash on Sunday I can’t drink as much as I did yesterday. It’s not only very bad for my waistline (nor was all the pizza I ate), but it completely screws up my sleeping pattern. I crashed on the couch after getting home (sometime around 9:00pm) only to wake up at 2am and remained awake until 3:30am. Further I had to search for about twenty minutes for my house keys, retracing my steps and turning the house upside-down only to find them by my car on my driveway.

Is There A Bachelor In The House?

Which apparently only primed the engine for Sunday…

Is National Grain Going Out To Pasture?
It never fails, as soon as I start touting a local band they talk about quitting. At their in-store at Decatur CD on Saturday National Grain must have mentioned taking a hiatus to somebody there because they posted this news on their blog.

Tonight, Tonight, Wahhooooo
If I can remain awake tonight I will be at Variety Playhouse for the Tilly And The Wall show. One of the unique features of T&TW is that they have a tap dancer provide percussion. That’s right, tonight there will be a woman on stage tap dancing throughout the show. That right there is worth the price of admission for me.

Two Days With Firefox 2.0 — It’s Going To Take Some Time To Get Used To
I bit the bullet the other day and “upgraded” all my computers to Firefox 2.0. Why? Fuck if I know, I just thought it was the right thing to do. Since I used to use the TabX extension I was not disturbed to see that they incorporated an ‘X’ on each tab. The built-in spelling checker is also a nice addition although I will still rely on the Dictionary.Com search extension as a means for making sure that I am using the word that I think I am.

What has thrown me is a change made on the Mac version. Since adding Macs to my computer repertoire last year I’ve gotten used to holding down the single mouse button for a few seconds which then got interpreted as a right-button mouse click. This feature has been changed and now I am forced to do a CTRL + button mouse click in order to simulate a right-button click. This requires two hands instead of one, and worse than that requires retraining of my mind.

Early, Smoke-Free, And Awesome
What are two things normally associated with The EARL?

- late starts
- smoking

Neither of those occurred at last night’s National Grain / Alejandro Escovedo show.

A month ago I purchased four tickets for the show. Unfortunately things fell apart with one of the people who was to attend, and I was too lazy to do the legwork to find a fourth so I asked the girl at the ticket desk to let the next person who was purchasing a ticket in for free. I am not sure if it actually happened but it was nice to have one of those Pay It Forward moments.

I am guessing that the early start tripped up more than one show goer last night which accounted for the unusually small crowd assembled for the National Grain set. A big thanks goes out to my friend Betsy for alerting me that it was to be an early start otherwise I might have been one of those who missed them as well (see also Piebald @ Masquerade although this time the venue’s website was in error).

National Grain put on their typically great set. I’ve mentioned them in this space before and still say that if you are a fan of Alt-Country you should check them out. One good place to do so is Decatur CD where they will be doing an in-store set at 3pm this Saturday (that’s tomorrow). Not only will you hear great music, but I have also heard that there will be a 20% discount on all purchases made tomorrow. That’s not too shabby..

Alejandro Escovedo may be the most unlikely rocker on the planet (see photo below), but man can that guy (and his band) jam! I am not all that familiar with his catalog of music but I now know why his shows usually sell out.

ITP Flickr Pic
From last night’s concert…

Alejandro Escovedo

One of the bands covers was a song they have never performed (it was an Oasis song I believe). I got a good chuckle out of this girl who held up the lyrics for Alejandro so that he could read them as he sang.

It’s Called “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”
And let’s keep it that way, mmmmmm’kay?

No Pic For You!

I have nothing in the Flickr bank to share today. My creativity has been on a down swing this week so I haven’t been toting the camera around for photo ops.

Names I Remember From Darker Days
- Sonja Larson
- Christina Powell
- Christa Hoyt
- Tracy Paules
- Manny Taboada

For many years these five names were painted on the popular graffiti site in Gainesville, Florida, the 34th Street wall. The fact that they stayed on the wall was amazing because any space on the wall is precious and on any given night someone would claim wall space for their artwork. When I visited Florida a month ago the names had been painted over, at least I didn’t see them, and I realized that it had been sixteen years since the names were painted on the wall — an eternity in university time frames.

These names will be forever linked to one more name, Danny Harold Rollins, the man who took their lives and who was executed yesterday in Florida.

While I did not know any of the people who were murdered, I will never forget the fear that spread through the town as if lightning had struck. I will also never forget the morning I saw an army of news trucks parked in front of an apartment complex between my apartment and the university campus and understanding why they had swarmed there without having to inquire why they were there.

I’m not going to get up on a soapbox here and profess that capital punishment is the answer to all that ails us, but then again five innocent people lost their lives in a three-day period sixteen-years ago, all because of this twisted individual. I hope some sort of closure was gained by the victims’ surviving family members yesterday.

Top Chef Is Back!
And I am already behind because apparently Top Chef came back last week. Luckily for me Bravo was nice enough to replay the first episode prior to showing this week’s new episode. The show is almost exactly as it was in season one, however the painfully stiff hostess of the show has been replaced by tv chef personality Padma Lakshmi.

What A Bunch Of Dicks
Has anyone else seen the season premier of Aqua Teen Hunger Force? I watched it and I was incredibly shocked how crude it was even by ATHF’s standards. Oh I’ll be back to watch again, I just hope that the episodes are better than Sunday’s.

Recipe For A Good CD
Ingredients
- one part Queen
- one part Muse
- one part Marvelous 3 (this ingredient has been discontinued and may be difficult to locate outside of Atlanta)
- garnish with Pink Floyd for dark subject matter (optional)

Procedure
- place all ingredients into a blender
- blend until completely mixed
- pour into a tall, frosted glass
- consume

That’s the recipe I think My Chemical Romance followed for their latest CD “The Black Parade”. I enjoyed a large portion this morning along with some coffee sold to me by my favorite barista on my drive in to work today. While I am not ready to anoint “The Black Parade” with the honor of Best of ‘06 I do believe that it is one of the strongest releases I’ve heard all year.

I purchased the My Chemical Romance disc, along with doing some catalog backfill by buying REM’s “Green” and The Replacements’ “Let It Be” (two discs that were lost in the Great Carjacking of ‘04) from Decatur CD. I thought about giving Criminal Records another shot if for no other reason than seeing if I could finally meet Tessa, but the Jackmobile was pointed toward Decatur so I let it continue.

Get Out Of The House
I know, it’s a cheesy line from The Amityville Horror, one of the many horror movies I have avoided through my lifetime, but it’s applicable for tonight.

Tonight presents (at least) two fantastic options for your entertainment dollar. Criminal Records is celebrating fifteen years of existence with a shindig starring Elf Power and Patton Oswald (who thought they’d be on the same billing?) at Variety Playhouse. As for me, I’ll be at The EARL to hear National Grain and Alejandro Escovado.

I’m not sure if these events are sold out, but if they are don’t blame me I didn’t tell you to wait until the last minute to purchase tickets…

Sweaters, Not Sweating

The colder weather and a desire to do some home cooking has chased me indoors. I know, I am a wimp.

Call Me Dr. Doolittle
There isn’t much to say about a spent cooking, eating, watching tv and doing laundry. That’s my night in a nutshell and to be honest that’s all I felt like doing last night.

The thought of going out and doing a little nighttime photography crossed my mind, but the idea dimmed as I continued to watch the clock creep toward bedtime.

The Long And Winding Road

Today’s title was initially to refer to my weight and the long and winding road that I face in order to get back to the person I used to be. Then this morning I was unable to merge onto the Connector because it was jammed packed at 6:30am and I was forced to take the long and winding path to Sidney Marcus so that I could jump onto 400 from there to make it into work.

Paging Captain Obvious!
For a while I was quite confused why everyone was so up on Sunday’s Amazing Race. Afterall the show started with the continuous product placement of the damn Nokia phone.

For a while I thought that Rob and Kimberly were taking a walk, but soon I realized that the beginning of the show contained foreshadowing and that it was going to be Team “Three And A Half Legs” (or was it Team “One And A Half Legs Plus One Big Asshole”?) to walk the plank. It certainly came as no surprise to me that the end of their participation in the show also marked the end of their relationship either. As I stated before, I’ve seen that look and heard that tone of voice from enough women to know that Peter was doomed. I had a good laugh when they lucked onto the Fast Forward instead of the camel race track. I’m sure that Sarah misread the map on purpose just to end the relationship… as I am sure as at least one of my former girlfriends has done the same. :)

The rest of the race still frustrates and confuses me, mostly with the amount of “teamwork” going on between the Cho(?) brothers, Alabama, and Kentucky. To let David and Mary run free to the Fast Forward seems a bit asinine to me as well. The only reason I can see this threesome staying together is if the Cho-bros think that they can beat the other two if they are the last three teams remaining.

Next week’s previews already have me geeked up to watch.

I call this “Table For One”

There Was A Seat Open At My Table

Why It’s CD Tuesday!
A few of the Indie Gods release discs today. Who you may wonder? Well Conor Oberst, aka “Bright Eyes” for one. He is releasing one of those cheesy “B-Sides and Rarities” discs that I abhor, so I won’t be picking that up.

Instead I will pick the release of “The Black Parade” from My Chemical Romance for my CD Pick Of The Week. Why not, I like blacks, parades, chemicals, and romance so it seems like the perfect mix for my tastes. I didn’t get a chance to listen to the disc on AOL’s CD Release Party so I can’t guarantee it being good, but I will be giving the disc a virtual spin tonight.

Most Sober Day Was At The Beer Festival?

Of Friday, Saturday and Sunday the day I was most sober was the day I went to the Decatur Beer Festival? That seems wrong.

And Now I Remember Why I Stopped Going
The weather was perfect.
The women were stunning.
I had a hankering for beer and didn’t even mind that I paid $33 (with “convenience charge”) to drink it.

And then I entered the “Great” Decatur Beer Tasting Fiasco. After swimming through humanity for a few hours to grab mini-glasses of beer (with no hope to try to take pictures) my friends Phil, Stacy and I decided to leave.

I am stunned that an event so poorly executed continues to thrive. I like rubbing up against beautiful women as much as the next straight man, but jesus even that grows old quickly (if that’s as far as it goes). With Decatur Square’s layout festival planners should push to close a couple of adjoining streets and spread out the festival so that people could enjoy themselves. If they fail to do so, someone should decide that allowing so many people in that small of an area is just fucking nuts.

I’ll make it a little easier for them next year by not attending.

ITP Flickr Pic
For some reason the neon signs under this Decatur parking deck intrigued me.

Keep Throwing To Alge!
Yesterday brought live professional football back into my life. My friend Harold’s company has awesome Falcons seats (section 249 row 1) so I brought the camera. Even with my longest telephoto lens the action was too far away for my liking, so I doubt I will be keeping any of the shots I took (and it also explains why the sideline photographers have those ginormous lenses).

The game itself was quite entertaining, and quite intoxicating when you start the day getting one at Gorins in CNN Center and then purchase a 24-ounce beer ($7.75!) each bathroom break.

Admittedly I am not a big Falcons fan (although I do not dislike them like I do the Braves), but it was fun serenading the legions of Steeler fans on their way out of the Dome.

Happy Birthday iPod
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the iPod’s introduction. Happy Birthday, iPod! It seems odd that the iPod phenomena is a mere five years old. Somehow it seems that we’ve always had this technology.

It took me until 2005 to break down and purchase my first iPod (I now have two). I wasn’t sure that I would ever use the device enough to warrant its purchase… how wrong I was. Since I have become an Apple reconvert I can never see myself owning a Microsoft Zune. Perhaps I should learn never to say never.

No Amazing Race Update Today
Why? Because I was so whooped when I got home from the Falcons’ game I passed out on the couch. I’ll watch tonight and post something about it tomorrow.

AFK
I’ll be away from my keyboard most of today. It’s our semi-annual college interview day in the office. So if you ever wondered why I’ve traveled to such exotic locations like Auburn, Alabama and Gainesville, Florida you now know why.

There Is No Joy In My Mudville

It’s A Small Man Whose Happiness Hinges On The Outcome Of Others’ Sports Skills
Today I am such a small man. I can’t help it, I have so little in my life right now I was counting on the Mets to make it into the World Series. I never doubted that they would; it looks like I was very wrong. This is another in a long series of events which explains why I can’t be an optimist.

In the end it was a lack of hitting that did them in and not a battered pitching staff.

Landlines Once Ruled The World!

This Weekend Is Made For Drinking
Tomorrow is the Decatur Beer (tasting) Festival. I used to really enjoy this event back in the day (2000-2002) but stopped going because the crowd became too big and the lines too long. I am giving the event another shot and hopefully this crummy weather will clear before then. If you are looking for me I’ll be the one looking like a sleazy photographer consuming beer.

On Sunday I’ll be down at the Dome watching our local sports team play last year’s World Champs. I really should be more excited about this but right now it’s hard for me to drum up any excitement for sports. The last seven days have exhausted me.

And Finally
A big thanks to my dinner group friends for coming over, bringing delicious food (which they didn’t have to do) and beer, and enjoying Paulie’s Jew Deli homage. We feasted on Sue’s squash soup, a variety of meats (including Tony’s home-made pastrami) and cheeses, many a beer, and topped the evening of with some Black and White cookies from Bagel Palace (great idea Margaret!). Why Is Heaven So Hot?

It was like 80-something degrees in Heaven (The Masquerade) last night, and this was before I left steaming…

The Man Who Can Do Nothing Right
Can we get a little consistency in this city please?

I sat around the house last night until about 8pm before heading to The Masquerade to see Piebald. As it was I thought I was leaving way too early. When I arrived at The Masquerade I noticed that there were already a lot of people (read “kids”) there. As I entered Heaven a band was ready to start. I was pleased because I knew that his wasn’t Piebald so I thought all was good. As this band ended they thanked Piebald and some other band; I was confused. I walked to the back of the room and saw Piebald’s singer Travis (no, I didn’t shake his hand) and asked him if they had already played, which he answered “Yes.” Fuckin’ A!!!!!! It wasn’t even 9pm and three bands had finished? At The EARL the first band wouldn’t have even taken the stage!!!!!!!!!!

I left The Masquerade frustrated (I was there to see Piebald, not Say Anything), and headed home.

Last night I went back and looked at The Masquerade’s website only to see that they did indeed say that the doors opened at 6pm. I am such a tool…

I might not be as smart as that Jared dude who was fat and has made a million or so bucks by losing weight by eating Subway sandwiches, but I know how to easily please a crowd. Tonight is my turn to host a Thursday dinner group and rather than struggling with finding a recipe that can sufficiently serve 8-10 I have decided to go the Jew Deli route by offering up a selection of meats, cheeses, breads, and condiments for my guests. I figure each of us can build a plate and then sit around and converse.

Things Are So Slow I Forgot To Add A Title This Morning…

Call Senator Stevens, My Internet Tubes Are Clogged
It’s been like 1996 in my house recently. My internet connection through SnappyDSL has been bloody awful, reminding me of the old dialup days.

While I’ve never had the fastest of DSL connections, especially since Telocity went belly-up after being bought out by DirecTV, my connection has been reliable. This has changed often the last few days making me wonder if something has gone awry with the infrastructure (not mine) and will never be corrected. Since SnappyDSL is based in Miami it’s not like they can send a guy out to check on the situation either.

If things don’t get better soon I might have to make a deal with The Devil.

ITP Flickr Pic
This was the opening face off from last Wednesday’s Bruins/Thrashers game. I haven’t had a lot of practice capturing sporting events so I am fairly pleased how this turned out.

Face Off!

Even I Have My Limits
Remember how I said that my CD Pick of the Week yesterday was the Badly Drawn Boy release? (I am apparently the only one who thinks this is a decent CD) I went to make good on my suggestion by heading out to Criminal Records to make the purchase. I walked up to the counter to purchase the CD only to find out that the cost was $17.99 (plus tax of course). Nope, add it to the list containing the $5.50 pint of beer because I am not going to do it! You might say “But Paulie, CDs have cost that much for some time! Asshat.” I usually wait for the CDs I desire to make it to the used bins.

I have over 35GB of ripped music (not including downloaded podcasts) so it’s not like I am hurting for options.

btw - I just received and email from La La and they are selling the same CD for $11.69 (plus some delivery fee that I have yet to determine).

No George’s… Again
In the future this section will appear only when I intend to go to George’s…

Tonight instead of exercising (followed by beer drinking) I will be headed to The Masquerade to see Piebald. The bands Say Anything and Me Without You are also on the bill so I am making the assumption that Piebald is the opener, although if memory serves me right they headlined at The Masquerade the last time I saw them there. This time the show is in Heaven and not Hell and to be honest I really don’t know which one of the three bands is big enough to warrant that size room. I guess I will find out tonight.

Does anyone know what time the first band usually hits the stage there? I cannot remember.
