No Pic For You!

I have nothing in the Flickr bank to share today. My creativity has been on a down swing this week so I haven’t been toting the camera around for photo ops.

Names I Remember From Darker Days
– Sonja Larson
– Christina Powell
– Christa Hoyt
– Tracy Paules
– Manny Taboada

For many years these five names were painted on the popular graffiti site in Gainesville, Florida, the 34th Street wall. The fact that they stayed on the wall was amazing because any space on the wall is precious and on any given night someone would claim wall space for their artwork. When I visited Florida a month ago the names had been painted over, at least I didn’t see them, and I realized that it had been sixteen years since the names were painted on the wall — an eternity in university time frames.

These names will be forever linked to one more name, Danny Harold Rollins, the man who took their lives and who was executed yesterday in Florida.

While I did not know any of the people who were murdered, I will never forget the fear that spread through the town as if lightning had struck. I will also never forget the morning I saw an army of news trucks parked in front of an apartment complex between my apartment and the university campus and understanding why they had swarmed there without having to inquire why they were there.

I’m not going to get up on a soapbox here and profess that capital punishment is the answer to all that ails us, but then again five innocent people lost their lives in a three-day period sixteen-years ago, all because of this twisted individual. I hope some sort of closure was gained by the victims’ surviving family members yesterday.

Top Chef Is Back!
And I am already behind because apparently Top Chef came back last week. Luckily for me Bravo was nice enough to replay the first episode prior to showing this week’s new episode. The show is almost exactly as it was in season one, however the painfully stiff hostess of the show has been replaced by tv chef personality Padma Lakshmi.

What A Bunch Of Dicks
Has anyone else seen the season premier of Aqua Teen Hunger Force? I watched it and I was incredibly shocked how crude it was even by ATHF’s standards. Oh I’ll be back to watch again, I just hope that the episodes are better than Sunday’s.

Recipe For A Good CD
Ingredients
– one part Queen
– one part Muse
– one part Marvelous 3 (this ingredient has been discontinued and may be difficult to locate outside of Atlanta)
– garnish with Pink Floyd for dark subject matter (optional)

Procedure
– place all ingredients into a blender
– blend until completely mixed
– pour into a tall, frosted glass
– consume

That’s the recipe I think My Chemical Romance followed for their latest CD “The Black Parade”. I enjoyed a large portion this morning along with some coffee sold to me by my favorite barista on my drive in to work today. While I am not ready to anoint “The Black Parade” with the honor of Best of ’06 I do believe that it is one of the strongest releases I’ve heard all year.

I purchased the My Chemical Romance disc, along with doing some catalog backfill by buying REM’s “Green” and The Replacements’ “Let It Be” (two discs that were lost in the Great Carjacking of ’04) from Decatur CD. I thought about giving Criminal Records another shot if for no other reason than seeing if I could finally meet Tessa, but the Jackmobile was pointed toward Decatur so I let it continue.

Get Out Of The House
I know, it’s a cheesy line from The Amityville Horror, one of the many horror movies I have avoided through my lifetime, but it’s applicable for tonight.

Tonight presents (at least) two fantastic options for your entertainment dollar. Criminal Records is celebrating fifteen years of existence with a shindig starring Elf Power and Patton Oswald (who thought they’d be on the same billing?) at Variety Playhouse. As for me, I’ll be at The EARL to hear National Grain and Alejandro Escovado.

I’m not sure if these events are sold out, but if they are don’t blame me I didn’t tell you to wait until the last minute to purchase tickets…

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – blah
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Husker Du — “Sunshine Superman” (can I tell you how much I loved Husker Du?)
Website Of The Day – Want to go film your on horror flick, perhaps the next Blair Witch Project? Search the National Park Service’s listing of parks to find a location near you.
Exercise (b)Log – none

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

16 years — wow. I had no idea it had been that long since the “Gainesville Murders”. Ironically, I’m heading down to UF tomorrow with my debaters for the Blue Key tournament. I wonder if they had “Burn Rollins” parties like they did with Ted Bundy? Purple Porpoise offered two-for-one drinks the day Bundy fried. Do you think college kids these days would be that disrespectful?!

  2. I don’t know what happened in and around Hogtown. The stories I read were on the AJC’s website.

MCR? Haven’t heard it yet, but I heart them. I wish they didn’t suck live.

Sixteen years… wow… I remember all that happening while I was in high school, and one of the women was from my area. And I remember that my first visit to Gainesville as a college student, Valentine’s weekend 1994, was when they caught Rollins. I’m glad he’s no longer on this earth.

I wish I was heading down to Gainesville tomorrow :/

I wish someone would offer two for one drinks around here. This town is a friggin’ rip-off.

Speaking of Variety Playhouse, the Black Keys will be playing there in November. It think. Google them and shit for more and posssibly accurate details. Do NOT miss that show, they are intense.

Apparently, my first comment didn’t post, but if it did, sorry for the double post.

Speaking of Variety Playhouse, the Black Keys will be there Novermber 10th. They rule. I just bought my ticket. Unlike you, I’m a pessimist, so I only bought one. I need some Preperation H after the cornholing Ticketbastard just gave me.

@Leah: MCR sucks live? Too bad because their music is great!

@Smoove D: For some reason the Askimet scanner picked up your comments as spam. It wasn’t me, I swear. 🙂 I’ll have to check out Black Keys. Thanks!
