Man My Windshield Wipers Suck

As my windshield alternated between smeared and partially-smeared this morning I kept thinking to myself “Didn’t I just have these replaced?” It seems like decades since I’ve had a pair of windshield wipers that worked properly.

This Ain’t Your Father’s Amazing Race
Stacy and Phil don’t read this part if you have yet to catch up. I know how you like to make my think that you have and then when I start talking about it you tell me I’ve spoiled the surprise — see also Survivor. :P

There are times when I watch this season of Amazing Race that I wish Shoobie was nearby to translate the Kentucky-speak for me. Any of you who heard that the Kentuckians (Kentuckyites?) finished in last place on the previous leg may think that his skills are no longer needed. But wait! This was not to be an elimination leg of the race… However, unlike in previous seasons Mary and David were not stripped of all possessions, instead they were “marked for elimination” (I think they should have to wear a scarlet ‘E’) meaning that if they do not finish in first place on the next leg that they will be assessed a thirty-minute penalty. This seems a bit lenient to me, but I’m just an arse.

I hope that this penalty doesn’t cause David and Mary to be elmininated because with every passing week they become closer to being the only pair that I hope wins. I for one am sick and tired of hearing about how the two pretty-boy models were recovering addicts and how tough it was. I am certain it was extremely painful, now shut up about it and move on.

What’s with all the teamwork going on this season? In future episodes I hope that there is some sort of collusion rule put in place so that pairs can’t team up to help one another. This is supposed to be competition goddammit!

Dude Looks Like A Photographer, Part 2
On Saturday I saw this girl in Oakhurst who was out doing a bicycle ride. As I was passing I said “I’m jealous, it’s such a great day for a ride.” Her response was “It sure is, are you out here working today?”

I’ve completely nailed the photographer look. I now know what I can be for Halloween…. Creepy Porn Photographer Guy

How Many Shots Do You Get To Be In Love?
Recently I’ve been reading of couples who have split up and gotten back together. This has never happened to me, so it confuses me somewhat.

Unlike muscles I don’t believe that the bonds of love get stronger when broken. In general I think that you get one shot at falling in love with someone and when the separation occurs that one shot is over. Also, the women with whom I’ve had relationships which have failed have never asked to get back together.

What says you? I am curious to know.

CD Pick Of The Week
I thought that this was going to be a difficult selection to make this week… and then I listened to the new Badly Drawn Boy release “Born in the U.K.” on AOL’s CD Listening Party. Holy fuck is this a good cd! Not once did I look over to the laptop and think “Well there’s a song to skip.” And before you go bashing me for liking Badly Drawn Boy because they don’t rock, remember that I am open to all most types of music.

A CD that I am going to suggest you avoid is Gomez’ “Five Men In A Hut.” Readers with good memories will remember that I really like Gomez and the music that they produce. However this is a “Greatest Hits” release which I can’t condone. I am tired or record companies repackaging music, tossing in a couple of “new” or “rare” tracks, and expect us to buy it all again. Fuck. That.

One If By Choice, Two If By Sleep

Those were the two ways I missed two of the three planned concerts this weekend. I saw the Built To Spill show as planned on Friday night, although I have to admit to leaving at 12:35am because I was tired and didn’t expect the show to be a late one. Saturday I was in no mood to go out, especially to a club to I have never been. And Sunday a bike ride and too much beer did me in. When I got home I decided to take a short nap to recuperate for the Ben Kweller show, unfortunately “short” turned into “two hours” and when I woke up it was too late to rally to go to the show.

No Wii For Me (aka Wee)
What a bummer! I heard that a pre-sale of Nintendo’s next generation console known as the Wii (pronounced “we”, or “oui”) was happening at GameStop/EB stores on Friday. I also heard that the pre-sale would end at each store once the allotted units had been purchased. So at 10:30am I strolled over to Perimeter Mall (have you heard that there is an Apple Store there now?) with the intention of making a pre-sale purchase. Somewhat to my surprise the pre-sale was already over by the time I arrived at the store.

Oh well. I now predict that I will probably never own a Wii because that’s the type of person I am. When I get all wound up about buying something I either complete the transaction immediately, or never at all. Only time will tell.

Wild Kingdom
I was completely in awe on Saturday morning. While driving up Moreland Avenue like I have so many times before I saw something that I have never seen happen in real life and I wish I was able to photograph the sequence.

There is a Church’s Chicken at the corner of Moreland and Wylie. While driving through that intersection I saw a large bird of prey (hawk or falcon) with its wings fully extended swooping down under the Church’s street-level sign. Seconds later I saw the bird fly from the ground with a rodent in its talons. While I certainly felt badly for the rodent I am well aware that this is all part of the circle of life.

Bad Weekend For My Orange And Blue
Well, I had that deep feeling in my gut that I was not going to be happy come Sunday morning, and I was unfortunately right. Not only did my Mets underwhelm this weekend, my beloved Gators also dropped a game that they could have won. I give much credit to Auburn who I knew would be a good enough team to make sure that they wouldn’t lose two consecutive games at home.

What does this all mean to my life? Truth be told not a whole lot more than bragging rights which get me a whole lot of nothing in the real world.

I’d Like To Live In Poverty

Ooops, that should have read “I’d Like To Live With Parvati.” What can you expect on Friday the 13th?

My friends and I have once again started wagering on who will get booted from Survivor. Last night I had it pegged, until I started doubting my decision and crafted an entire new plot into the show. Needless to say I picked the wrong person, but thankfully so did Stacy and Phil so it was a draw.

I’m Not So Sure About The New Yahoo Mail
Yahoo! has gone and updated its Yahoo! Mail webpage. The new look confuses me, most likely because I’ve been using the other for the past two or so years. Also, things seem to be smaller, more stuff is crammed onto the page, and if my initial feeling is correct it’s far more sluggish than before.

Is it just me? Has anyone else’s Yahoo! mail account been converted over? What says you?

[update @ 9:30am: The new Yahoo! mail has frustrated me so much that I have employeed their "switch back" option.]

Picturing A Dilemma
Because I am a masochist I am considering leaping into the 2000’s and getting a Blackberry. Oh sure, I know the evils that Crackberries create and I’m ready to assume them.

My dilemma is this. Until yesterday I was fairly certain that I was going to move from Sprint to Cingular and purchase a Blackberry 8700c. I knew that in doing this I’d be giving up the ability to take photos with my phone because there is no camera on the 8700c, and I was sort of okay with that. Then a coworker went and got a Blackberry Pearl. The Pearl has a much nicer form-factor (due to its modified keyboard) and has a 1.3 megapixel camera. Unfortunately the Blackberry Pearl is only offered by T-Mobile.

Dammit I hate it when this happens!

This was to be one of the masterpieces I took while in Philips Arena last night. However getting home from trivia at 10:30pm followed by watching the end of the Mets game and then Survivor I never uploaded anything.

Want To Find Me This Weekend?
You’ll probably have to go see some live music. A quick glance at my calendar shows two definite concerts (Built to Spill tonight at Variety Playhouse and Ben Kweller Sunday night at The EARL) and one tentative concert (Manchester Orchestra at Club 585) on the agenda. If I understand things correctly the Manchester Orchestra show is also a CD release party. If so that will increase the likelihood of my appearance.

There will also be a photostroll in Oakhurst tomorrow morning at the Oakhurst Arts and Music Festival.

And on Sunday, Sunday, SUNDAY!!! I will be attending the Wheelhopper hash #250. That’s right Black Sheepers, I’m jumping camps for a weekend because I want to ride my bike, and oh, the start is a mile from East Atlanta.

It’s All About Moi

Cold As Ice
Nope, not talking women here (although the header is applicable) I’m talking about hockey.

After determining the best plan of action for driving down to Philips last night (do not ask because it didn’t work out so well) I left work and high-tailed toward downtown.

I was packing camera equipment so my first task was to find out if I’d be allowed to bring it inside. The ticket agent didn’t know (argh) so I walked to one of the entrances and got the a-ok from one of the ticket-takers. This wound up working in my favor. On my trip back to the ticket counter a guy, who had overheard my conversation with the ticket agent, asked me the outcome of my quest. Remember how I mentioned that it was 2-for-1 ticket night last night? It turned out that this guy was in a party of five (wouldn’t that make a great tv show?) and he was in possession of six $55 (which cost $27.50 last night) tickets. I offer the guy $25 for his extra and made the deal on the spot.

After the first period ended I went walking to the section that my normal hockey companions occupy. I had a good chuckle when the following conversation with one of the spotlight operators.

operator: you should be taking photos from the catwalk.
me: no can do, I’m afraid of heights. (sidenote: why do I always tell people this?)
operator: well then you are in the wrong profession.

Hah! I’ve made it! I’ve accomplish the “professional photographer” look! W00t! That’s at least two steps above Comic Book Guy.

On my way to buy a tasty Molson Canadien I found my friend Harold and his son Alex in line for beer (imagine that!). I wound up sitting with them for the second and third periods, drinking beer and shooting the shit.

Btw- Philips Arena is cold when hockey is being played (I know the ice needs cold temps, but I didn’t remember it being that cold inside the arena in the past).

It’s Not The Heat, It’s The Humidity
After exiting Philips Arena I was in the mood to do a night-time photostroll around Centennial Park. Unfortunately, the change of temperature and humidity from inside the arena to outside kept fogging up my lenses. The idea of waiting for the epuipment to acclimate became a buzzkill so I packed up and headed home.

Gate Access Required?
I found out yesterday that Cold War Kids are playing with Foreign Born in Nashville on October 24th (a Tuesday). In planning this pie-in-the-sky field trip I consulted Mapquest to see how far Nashville is from my office.

It turns out to be too far for a weekday trip, however step 11 of the directions really made me laugh

11: Turn LEFT onto EAKIN-WEAKLEY DR (Gate access required).

Gate access required? Is the Government test-marketing “The Fence” they are going to install along the US/Mexico border by fencing off Nashville?

I really wish that this was a Friday night show so that I could make the trip.

Breaking Away

For at least the third week in a row I shan’t be running the Wednesday night run at George’s. It’s not that I’ve quit running or have decided that I no longer wish to hang out with the George’s crowd, instead other opportunities (or work) have been popping up on Wednesdays. Se la vie.

Take Me Out To The Puck Game
I really want to go to see the Bruins play the Thrashers tonight. The only thing that is scaring me off is the price of goddamn hockey tickets. The cheapest nose-bleed seats are only $10 but they are so high I can imagine that the players look any larger than ants. If you can believe this, the rink-side seats go for $250 per ticket! At one time hockey was a blue-collar sport, no more.

Tonight is a two-for-one ticket night so if anyone wants to go, holler at me. Keep in mind that I am planning on trying to do some photography however.

Over Before It Began?
Can I retire from a sport that I officially never played? The knee injury I suffered ten days ago at the Australian Rules Football practice has still not completely healed. I feel an annoying twinge when I attempt to run, and sometimes when I walk. Perhaps with one of those blasts of wisdom that comes at my advancing age I have determined that it’s best to not attempt to play and avoid further damaging my knee; straight-line running with multiple pauses is one thing, running in everywhich direction in a sport with contact is something else.

TV From The Web, Part 1
Last night I watched the first TV show I’ve purchased through iTunes. The episode purchased was Season Three, Episode One — “Gay Witch Hunt” of The Office. While I easily could have bittorrented the show for free I thought I’d take the moral high-road and purchase my copy legally. Besides, for $2 it was a great way to experiment with purchasing video via iTunes.

My experienced was mixed. The download occurred in a reasonable amount of time, especially since I don’t have the greatest of DSL speeds. When I launched the show I had high expectations because the video screen displayed nearly covered my entire 15″ widescreen laptop. However those hopes were quickly dashed when I saw the crazy amount of color-blocking that occurred on the screen. After shrinking the window down the display was more than acceptable. In the end I still think that $2 for a single twenty-two minute video is too expensive… especially at reduced video quality.

For those of you who recommended that I watch The Office I want to thank you. I am really enjoying catching up, even if some of the jokes and storylines hit a little to close to home sometimes.

There’s Nothing Like Home Cooking
One of the little-known facts about me is that I am a really good cook. This skill is a double-edge sword however because it not only occupies time that I need to exercise, but cooking tasty food doesn’t exactly help the waistline either.

I’ve taught myself how to cook out of necessity. Because I have lived alone for so long (cue pathetic music) if I wanted food at home I was the one who was going to have to cook it. Over the past few years I’ve soured on cooking at home because it’s hard for me to cook a meal for one person (is that pathetic music I hear?) and I am not the biggest fan of leftovers (with the exception of lasagne, chili, and meatloaf).

Last night I decided that it was time to return to the kitchen to do something more than grab a beer out of the refrigerator. Jambalaya was the destination and because I had made a trip to this mysterious place called a “grocery store” on Sunday I had all of the ingredients to make it. The recipe chosen was one that I’ve made often so I knew that it would turn out well — and I was right. After I was all done I realized that I could have taken photos throughout the process and posted a recipe to Flickr. Oh well, maybe next time. Anyone want to guess what I’ll probably be having for lunch today and/or tomorrow? :)

Fortune Cookie Logic
If only the cookie was right. The last two fortune cookies I received had said “A vacation to sunny shores is soon in store for you” and “You have a charming way with words and should write a book.” A nice vacation in a sunny locale where I could sit and write this space, and with any luck be able to go out and shoot photos, sounds incredibly inviting right now.

CD Pick Of The Week
My CD pick for this week isn’t even big enough news to make it to Metacritic’s Upcoming Releases. However, I still think that my choice is noteworthy.

My pick this week is from Cold War Kids and is known as “Robbers And Cowards”. Truth be told, this CD is a conglomeration of songs from their previous EPs as well as some new material.

I was able to give the “Robbers And Cowards” an entire listen over at AOL’s Listening Party before they changed the cds that they are streaming. While Cold War Kids won’t be everybody’s cup of tea as they are mostly piano-driven rock songs (think “Ben Folds”), I enjoyed the music enough to pre-order the CD from Decatur CD. I will be swinging by to pick it up on my way home from work.

Cold War Kids played Atlanta back in July. Hopefully they will swing back through the Southeast to support this release. As it stands now the closest they will get is Nashville.

Indecision Killed The Weekend

Sometimes there are just too many options from which I can choose. This was one of those weekends, and in the end I wound up doing less than usual…

Thought For Food

i. coli
u. coli
all we buy
contains e. coli

Spinach, orange juice, ground beef, and now lettuce? This is getting crazy! If this shit somehow pops up in beer I am just going to drink myself to death because life won’t be worth living.

Apple In My Office Backyard
Apparently I’ve yet to register on Apple’s “Must Notify” list. Just last week I found out that Apple has opened an Apple Store in Perimeter Mall which a short walk from my office — in June! C’mon guys in the past two years I have purchased much Apple merchandise and I receive email from you constantly, you’d think that would warrant some sort of head’s up.

Shouldn’t It Be A “k5″?
This weekend I saw an advertisement for the Dyslexia Dash 5k. It seems to me that this should be named differently so that those suffering from this affliction know that this race is for them.

Just Say No To Five-Fiddy
Dear Bar Owners,

I refuse to pay $5.50 for a pint of beer, high gravity specialty beers excluded. On Friday night I headed to The Corner Tavern (NSFW) in Little Five Points to meet up with the Atlanta Hash for happy hour. After getting a beer and food at the bar and settling up without examining the bill I was unaware that the pint of Smithwick’s cost $5.50. I ordered one more beer when the rest of the hashers arrived and when I settled up with the waitress I handed her $6 and told her to keep the change. She came back to me and asked me (in a somewhat miffed voice) if I was sure that I didn’t want my $0.50 back. I was under the impression that the beer would cost no more than $5, so I figured that I was giving her at least a $1 tip. I apologized and tossed her another buck and headed out the door.

While I can certainly afford to pay $5.50 for a single beer, from here on out I will choose not to do so. Maybe I am still jaded from my trip to Gainesville when I purchased two microbrewed beers for $2.45 at a real happy hour…

You Snooze You Lose, Or Sometimes Not!
Am I the only one who thinks that 7pm starts for Thrashers games is too early? I was busy watching my beloved Florida Gators beat LSU when I realized that there was no way for me to make it to Philips Arena for the start of the game.

Plan ‘B’ was to watch the Mets and/or Georgia game and then head up to The EARL to see Gringo Star (formerly A Fir-Ju Well). When I dozed off the Mets had blown their 4-0 lead and Georgia was knocking the snot out of Tennessee. When I awoke I thought I was dreaming when I found out that the Mets had won, and Georgia had lost (take note that I don’t like Tennessee either, but their win was the lesser of two evils). What a great sports weekend for me!

  • - Auburn lost to unranked Arkansas in Auburn
  • - Florida beat LSU
  • - The Mets beat the Dodgers, thus wrapping up Round 1 of the NL playoffs
  • - Tennessee somehow came back to beat Georgia
  • - NY Jets beat the Jacksonville Jaguars well, I couldn’t get everything I wanted

Don’t even ask about the East Atlanta Deadbeat Dads. It was another losing week for them as well…

The Race Is Starting To Heat Up!
Oh the amount of bickering which is starting to unfold… Watching last night’s Amazing Race was one of the few times that I was glad that I am not in a relationship. There is a new #1 on my dislike list and that goes to Rob & Meredith, followed closely by Sarah and her dickhead boyfriend Peter. The beauty queens are starting to get on my nerves as well, but I don’t think that they will be around much longer.

On the positive side I really enjoy the crazy things that come out of David’s and Mary’s (think Kentucky) mouths. The line about “water over your head, fall in and you are dead” had me rolling on the floor.

My Races Have Not Been So Amazing
On Friday’s run I had to quit running because I felt nauseous after about four miles of running/walking. I had to stop running and walk home. Yesterday I was feeling this way all afternoon so I didn’t dare attempt to go out for a run.

Pregnant you say? Well even if it was possible for a man to be pregnant, when compared to me the Pope look like Hugh Heffner. In fact if I can stay the course through year’s end the Pope will be sending me a certificate that restores my virginity. Cool, huh?

Born To Be Tired

Somewhat Reminiscent Of The Old Days
A dozen years ago Wednesday night was drinking night for some of the Intergraph 911 Emergency Dispatch programmers in Huntsville Alabama. We’d head out to a place called (if I remember correctly) The Turning Point and have cocktails and assorted shots until late in the evening. I’d drive home (most likely when I shouldn’t have) and then eat a toasted bagel with cream cheese (because it was quicker than making pasta and I needed something in my stomach before I went to sleep).

Last night reminded me of those days (thankfully minus the driving) if only because I was out drinking until 1:20am and upon returning I ate a slice of bread slathered with cream cheese. I may not be 29 any longer, but I can still hang with the youngins.

And Not Quite So Reminiscent
Once again I wasn’t in the mood to exercise; once again I convinced myself it would be best if I did. Unlike the night before, last night I was completely wrong. I struggled mightily from the get-go and things never got any better. At about the one-third point my body said “no more” so I quit running and walked home.

This is amazingly depressing to me. Without the ability to exercise daily I will never be able to lose weight (this I know to be true from my past). I’ve now given up the idea of running this year’s Atlanta Half Marathon on Thanksgiving Day.

My Return To The EARL
For some reason it’s been a while since I’ve darkened the doors of The EARL. With The Hold Steady playing there last night that streak came to an end. (now it’s time to work on some of the others…)

One of the good things about seeing a show for a band which has just released its second (or third :)) CD is that you know that you will still hear the songs that you liked from their first CD. There is none of the disappointment that occurs when you see older bands who have packed their hits into the archives.

The Hold Steady, whose second third (thanks D.D.D.Dave) CD “Boys And Girls In America” came out on Tuesday, cranked through music for at least an hour (I was having so much fun I lost track). During the entire show you could see the fun that these guys were having on stage. This happiness could have easily been dimished due to their favorite baseball team’s (the Minnesota Twins) second playoff loss in as many days but thankfully it was not; lead singer Craig Finn even sported a Twins jersey for the first encore. For the second-and-final encore the band allowed crowd members to join them on stage toward the end of the song.

Very well done gentlemen!

Soon To Be Spreading My Words Like A Virus
One of my goals for October is to once again become a participating author over on Atlanta Metroblogging. Not only should it garner more readers here, but it should force me to start paying attention to what is happening ITP again.

Additionally, have been asked by Rich who presides over Atlanta’s best Georgia-based music blog (as recognized by the readers of the Creative Loafing) Cable & Tweed to contribute to his site. I am looking forward to posting over there and have his readers question my musical sanity.

What A Croc Of Shite
Back in May or June I chastised people for loving their Crocs (read “ugly gardening shoes”). At that time I realized that eventhough I can’t stand them a lot of other people swore by them which made me think “investment opportunity” (NASDAQ: CROX). I started running the numbers for the investment group to which I belong but never finished before people suggested that we had missed the boat on Crocs so we didn’t invest. At that time the stock was trading around $25; as I write this it is trading around $34. Dammit I hate it when I don’t act on my instincts!
