Pot Luck

Today is our annual Thanksgiving Pot Luck luncheon.

Egg Beaten
Each year our office has a luncheon for which people bring in food they’ve made, or for the engineers, that they bought from a store. In years past I’ve made a vegetarian black bean stew, or a meat-filled jambalaya to name a few. My philosophy has been choose something that can simmer in a crockpot all day and I’m golden. This year I wanted to try a different skill, deviled eggs.

Apparently deviled eggs are the yang to my cooking yin. I’ve made hard-boiled eggs, mostly for egg salad, on many occasions. Therefore I didn’t think that deviled eggs were going to be that challenging. Somewhere along the way I missed a “trick” because the eggs just refused to be peeled without damaging the whites. After mangling about four of the nine eggs I peeled I quit and made a huge batch of egg salad for my personal consumption.

Of course I had a plan ‘B’. While at the store I picked up a can of jalapeƱos and some peanut butter to make the aptly named peanut butter filled jalapeƱo boats.

I’m mostly disappointed that the effort required to make all of this took nearly the entire evening.

While camp was empty I set up my laptop for a little photoshoot.

Camping And Computing

What was really funny to me was that the next day somebody actually brought a laptop (a Dell) to camp and was using it around the campfire.

BlackJack Do It Again
As of today Cingular is selling the Samsung BlackJack phone. The BlackJack is similar to the Motorola Q. This might be the phone which gets me to (finally) jump the Sprint ship, although I am a little weary of it because it runs Windows Mobile (yuck).

Frankly I am about as tired of shopping for a new phone as you probably are about me yapping about it. :)

Who Makes A Product For Which They Can’t Get The Website?
Microsoft, that’s who.

This week Microsoft launched Zune, pronounced “another mp3 player I will never purchase.” The latest “iPod Killer” was released with much fanfare and the whole “Welcome to the Social” slogan has been bandied about.

Let’s say you’d like to know more about Zune, where do you think you’d go to do so, Zune.com? No, at least not now because Microsoft doesn’t own that domain!, you’d have to go to Zune.net. Microsoft is saying that the .net domain makes more sense because of the social aspect of Zune, I say that this multi-billion dollar company was probably too cheap to buy out the person who owned the .com domain. Has Microsoft been pwned?

The Early Bird Special
Tonight it’s back to Masquerade to see …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. I’ve made sure to check the Masquerade’s website for the start time and wouldn’t you know, doors open at 7pm. I wonder if there is some sort of noise ordinance over there that is forcing them to have such early shows. It’s really the only reason that I can see. Come look for me, I’ll be the old guy who is confused why these shows are starting so early.

I Control What Goes Into My Piehole

That’s my new mantra. I don’t like the way I look. I don’t like the way I feel. I just have to remind myself constantly…

I control what goes into my piehole.

Gravity Falling?
Rumors are abound that my favorite East Atlanta watering hole has hit rockbottom and is heading toward closing. Last night I met a bunch of hashers at the Gravity Pub for some beer and darts. There was a slightly strange vibe in the building, much like a family gathering for a wake. I had way to much to drink (but to my credit I had walked to the bar) and must remember that while I would be saddened to see Gravity close its doors I cannot single-handily save the bar.

I control what goes into my piehole.

Maintenance Mode
I’m trying to regain the desire to keep myself in good working order. I’ve been in a real funk the past two months and have been letting myself go to pot. No, not that pot.

Yesterday’s trip to the dentist was a success, even though it cost $160 because my insurance is not accepted by my dentist. I’m not too bothered however because I have a flexible medical spending plan and if any problems were identified it would cost me a lot more.

Today is haircut day. I’m about a month overdue for a haircut. Surprisingly I don’t look as bad as I would expect at this point. However, I could use a good sprucing up.

Hell, I might even find a way to work in some exercise tonight as well. Tune in tomorrow to find out if I did…

‘Tis The Season
You probably think that I am going to talk about all the stuff I want to buy for myself this year. Not yet, that will be covered at a later date.

Today I am referring to the needs of others, especially those that have 503(c) non-profit status. I make a half-decent living and try to share a bit of it with non-profits who in return provide me with tax deductions. If you know of a worthy cause that I may not have heard about, please feel to drop their info into the comments, or email me using the link provided in the right-hand galley. I won’t promise a donation, but I’m all for learning about things I do not know.

Start Again

Yesterday I wrote all this bullshit that I was planning on putting out today. After re-reading it I saw it for the crap that it was and tossed it. Remember this statement because it means that I think the stuff below is better than the stuff I pitched. LOL!!!

Can You Name The Seven Natural Wonders Of Georgia?
Last weekend’s trip down south took me to one of the seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. Can you name them? I’ll give you a hint that neither The Georgia Aquarium, nor Spaghetti Junction are on the list.

If you are interested in the list you can look them up at this site.

btw- I was only able to name three. The closest one to Atlanta slipped my mind.

ITP Flickr Pic
I like this picture because it contains a point of reference, which just so happens to be the hasher named Oops!

Can You Find The Man?

I’m Ready For My X-Rays Mr. DeMille
Oh it’s that time of year again. This morning I have to go to the dentist for my semi-annual teeth cleaning and annual set of x-rays. While my teeth are straight (as is the rest of my body) they have not proven to be of the highest of quality so I always dread trips to the tooth-doc. I think I’ll eat some crunchy peanut butter before going in just to make their job a little bit tougher.

Now That’s Entertainment!
There will be a more in-depth account of last night’s play published later on today when I resurrect my “Stuck On The Connector” feature of this blog.

What a cheap date I made myself last night. Even though I was not going to eat dinner I couldn’t resist the lure of a Your DeKalb Farmer’s Market samosa. A delicious pyramid of ground lamb wrapped in a crunchy deep fried pastry and smothered in a sweet, yet slightly spicy sauce. Even better, this pocket of goodness cost me a whopping 75 cents! (okay, 80 cents with tax)

After satisfying my craving I headed over to the Push Push Theater where I was to see Out Of Hand Theater’s performance of “Nobody Hear But Us Chickens”. The shortened summary is this — I had a great time and would recommend going to see it soon as it’s run ends on November 19th. If you can’t make this performance you may want to keep tabs on Out Of Hand Theater and catch a future show that they put on; they are a talented bunch.

Time Shifting
Until yesterday I did not realize that this blog didn’t “fall back” automatically when the time changed a few weeks ago. Strange huh? I am usually a stickler for that sort of shit but for some reason this one tripped me up. All is fixed now so you can start sleeping well again. I know that it must have been bothering you…

On Tonight’s Docket
If I am up to going out tonight and tickets still remain I’ll be heading to Center Stage, or Earthlink Live, or Center Stage Atlanta, or whatever the heck that place is called to see She Wants Revenge. As an added bonus I think Pretty Girls Make Graves is opening.

Two reasons exist for me not purchasing a ticket for this show in advance. One is that there was an outside chance that I would be traveling for work today (which you may gather I am not). The larger reason was that the only non box office ticket broker was TicketBastard and I refused to cough up their exorbitant fees. I kept meaning to swing by the box office to purchase a ticket but just never did.

CD Pick Of The Week
Even though it is getting very mixed reviews and I have yet to hear it I am going to pick “So Divided” from … And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.

Why? Because I have enjoyed the Trail Of Dead’s previous releases and I will be seeing them this Thursday night at Masquerade.

Sometimes my picks are that simplistic.

I Feel So Special!

Man, MySpace Is Cool
Last night I created a MySpace account (because all of the Cool Kids did so last year). This morning a hot girl named Ana had already seen my profile and sent me this.

Hiya. How’s everything? I’m a newly single girl, and I don’t want to be single anymore. So I’m looking for a friend. Maybe friends with a little on the side ;) Let’s start talking and see what develops.

Who knows, maybe we’ll hit it off right away. My address is crown21[deleted to protect my newly found love]@yahoo.! I’ll be waiting..

See you later.

Everyone needs a friend with a little on the side, right? She even sent me this note without even seeing a picture of me, although I have to admit that I fibbed a bit on my birthdate and made myself five years younger. Had I known that Ana had been waiting for me to join I would have done so a long time ago!

MySpace, you should be called MyBestestSpaceEva!

Don’t Go Back To Lumpkin
Here’s a travel tip for those of you traveling toward southwest Georgia. Gas stations are few-and-far between, and ATMs and quality grocery stores are all-but nonexistent. These are my findings from this past Friday.

I took off for Providence Canyon State Park knowing that I would need to stop for food for Friday night’s dinner, some cash, and eventually petrol. I made the mistake thinking that since I would be exiting interstate highways my travels would take me through numerous towns and thus there would be ample opportunity to get each.

After riding with the low gas indicator illuminated for longer than made me comfortable I entered the town of Lumpkin. I found a gas station relatively quickly so I was somewhat relieved. I asked the the attendant (who was of Indian/Pakistan decent — imagine that even in rural Georgia) where the nearest grocery store was and he simply pointed down the road. Okay, I got back into my car and drove all around the town square and saw nothing (except a sign on a store that said “Christian Gun Sales” — I kid you not). I then entered the drug store and asked the woman inside where the grocery store was, and she replied “Do you know where the jailhouse is?” — I kid you not again. After driving around the town square a second time I started to wonder if these people were playing with the city-slicker, and then I found a small storefront which resembled a store which sells groceries. The store was about six aisles bid, but luckily provided me with most of the ingredients that I needed. I was also fortunate that I had enough cash to cover the cost because the store didn’t take credit cards.

I quickly sped away from Lumpkin never to return…

Near Campus Interruptus
Friday night couldn’t not have been much better than it was. A sparse group of hashers, five of us to be exact, drove down on Friday. We talked, played Uno, drank to excess, and cooked up some delicious food. Although some dark clouds passed overhead in the afternoon, the night was brilliantly clear and I saw stars that I’d never see around Atlanta.

On Saturday I hiked the park, camera ready and took some fairly interesting shots. Upon returning from the hike other hashers had arrived at camp and things were starting to liven up.

I made my first mistake of the day by shortcutting through what appeared to be a harmless creek and winding up waist deep in mud. Not exactly what I was hoping for, especially since there were no showers available. Things got worse when near the end of the hash the skies, which had once been a brilliant blue, turned dark gray and then unleashed a downpour. One thing to know about my tent is that it’s not the most waterproof one in the world, and since I wasn’t really expecting it to rain I didn’t take many rainproofing measures. I considered hiking up to get my car and pack all of my shit up and leave, but after realizing how stupid that idea was I poured a beer and started drinking. Luckily, the rain stopped, and things cleared up thereby giving my gear a chance to dry out a bit before I dragged my drunken ass into it for a cold, short night sleep.

In the end the hash camping was a huge success.

There’s No Amazing Race Update Today
Because they did another “too be continued episode”…

However I will say this.

- If those Cho Bros don’t grow a spine they won’t win. There is no need for them to play Ugly Americans a la ‘Bama, but nice guys finish last, or at best in fifth.

- Did anyone else know that they Beauty Queens were not natural blondes. I was stunned when I saw he family of Dustin (or was it Kandice? — all those hot blondes look the same to me). :)

- One male model riding piggy-back smacking the ass of the other, both seemed to enjoy it. Yeah, they are just good friends.

- Of course Kimberly owns one of those annoying long-haired yappy lap dogs!

Watching Amazing Race and Survivor always reminds me what a cold, blackened heart I must have. I never understand why people get so emotional when they are away from family (which I have) and loved ones (which I do not have) and then see a video or get a letter from them. Hell, even if you win on Survivor you are only on the island for thirty-nine days! Just call me Scrooge.

On The Road Again

A Friday Riddle:

I am not at work
I am not at home
Where am I?

Somewhere else of course!

I’m off to Providence Canyon State Park near Columbus to do a little camping this weekend. I’m kind of excited because the weather should be great, there will be beer to be consumed, and I’ve never spent any time in that part of the state before. The park is also supposed to have some incredible scenery so I’ll be toting the camera around to see what I can capture.

The Stroll Was Good, My Pictures Notsomuch
I met up with at least twenty other Flickrites last night for a photostroll that started at Willy’s. I thought that it was definitely going to be my night when I scored rock star parking directly across from the restaurant on Piedmont.

The group was very fun and friendly, and after finally getting it together for a group photo we splintered into sub-groups. I joined a group of four who headed up toward Peachtree, while the majority of the folks walked toward Piedmont Park. I really need to work on my night shooting and post-process the handful of shots that I captured last night. Oh yeah, I also might want to RTFM for my fancy-pants flash so I can use it better…

ITP Flickr Pic
No pictures from last night yet. I haven’t had time to process anything and I’m looking to hit the road ASAP.

I Love You

Damn You Google!
I’ve been contemplating my next cellphone for some time. Just when I thought that I’d be walking down the Blackberry path, Google announces Gmail for Java-enabled phones. Arrrgh. I am glad they’ve done this, but it now opens up many more options again.

Lessons Learned From Survivor (aka Spoiler Alert Stacy)
I thought last night’s episode of Survivor was fucking brilliant!

Never, and I mean never, tell your tribe that it’s every man for themselves when the tribes merge. That was just idiotic. Of course I didn’t pick up on this and pick Brad for departure, I thought that it was going to be Caucasian Adonis’ (aka Adam) turn to go.

I’m here to say that I thought that allowing players to mutiny was a fantastic idea. I can see Candace doing it to be with Adam, but Jonathan was a delusional as the Metal Head who thought he had love at first sight with Candace when he stepped off his mat.

I laughed my ass off when Probst told them that two of the team members had to go in a barrel and be rolled over logs. Too funny. Ozzy and Yul are monsters, their ability to perform the challenge was impressive.

Then there was Jonathan snarking at Probst when he said that they were wasting their cannon balls during the elimination challenge. I lost it when Probst replied “Jonathan getting frustrated by me.” Absolute comedy gold!!!

Tune in next week when Candace and Adam rekindle their love affair and get it on (cue the Barry White music)…

Virtual Friday

I’m not performing my “every Friday between Thanksgiving and New Year’s” this year. Instead I’ve been taking days off here and there. Tomorrow will be another one of those.

Of Old Friends And New
Last night I was loitering at The EARL because I can’t for the life of me get my timing straight when a good friend of mine pulled up with her husband. The have recently returned from their honeymoon in the Greek Islands and looked as happy as can be. It was odd

Later in the evening I met Smoove D who also showed up for the show at The EARL. I’d never formally met Smoove D before. If memory serves me right, the only time I’ve been around him was when I was serving him beer at the East Atlanta Notoberfest earlier in the year. It was nice to talk to you Smoove.

Less Feedback Please
The show at The EARL consisted of The Nevers from Chapel Hill, NC (of whom I have never heard), The Silent Kids from Atlanta(ish), and White Whale from Lawrence, KS.

The Nevers took the stage around 9:45pm. They were a four-piece whose sound I thought was pretty decent. I didn’t understand the slide show that accompanied the music even after it was explained that the music and the illustrations were connected and all done by the band. I contemplated buying their CD, but in the end chose not to.

The Silent Kids took the stage next. Smoove D had seen them before, I had not. He explained that they had been undergoing lineup changes so he wasn’t sure what to expect. I thought that their set was okay, but contained waaaay too much guitar feedback which pierced my ears constantly (you sir are no Kurt Cobain!). To my ears their vocals were too far down in the mix making the female’s portion almost non-existent.

Was there another secret Beck show last night? Did I miss a newsletter about a free sex-a-thon? Did Sweetwater decide to go out of business and give all of their beer away? I ask because the crowd last night at The EARL was the smallest I have ever seen. When White Whale took the stage I counted about thirty people, probably one-fifth of which were either in, or dating, the two opening bands.

I mentioned yesterday I new little of White Whale’s catalog. If pressed I would say that I enjoyed their music, although they are a little too “jam bandish” for my tastes. I will probably never pick up their cd because I doubt seriously that go back to listen to their tunes often. I also thought their set was a bit short. I was out of the bar by 12:30am.

I’m An Inconsequential Georgia Voter

I knew that everyone I voted for was going to lose, they all had (L) after their names.

WWJSD?
A co-worker and I got into a conversation about election day yesterday. We were joking about writing in names for uncontested races. But it got me thinking about this…

What if everyone wrote in the same name, say John Smith, for a write in candidate let’s say for the gubernatorial race? John Smith would be declared the winner, but which John Smith? The only information we provided for our write-in candidate was a name and that is obviously not unique. How would this be handled? I know that the premise is outlandish but it is at least conceivable.

Thanks All!
There were a lot of good restaurant suggestions put in yesterday’s comments. Now I am going to have to try eating at them and doing a Layperson Paulie Food Critique as a future “Stuck On The Connector” post.

What The Cluck
If I can get away with it next Monday night I am going to attempt to go to see “Nobody Here But Us Chickens” which is being put on by Out of Hand Theater at Push Push Theater in Decatur. Next Monday is an “Industry Night” meaning you can pay in cash anywhere from $12-$35 at the door. This sounds good to me as long as I fit under whatever they are categorizing as “Industry”.

Stalk Me Tonight
I’ll be at The EARL tonight to see White Whale. I know very little about this band, except for the one song that gets played on Sirius. I think that I might try and take the “big camera” into The EARL and see what happens. I’d like to see what I can do in a concert setting.

Huh? Election Day? Oh, that’s very different…

The Hungry Detective Visits Atlanta
Over the weekend I caught a new show (at least to me) on Food Network called The Hungry Detective. In this episode the so-called Hungry Detective visited Atlanta. In order to eat food representative of the city he ate at Mary Mac’s Tea Room, Harold’s BBQ, Ria’s Bluebird, Panahar Bangladeshi Cuisine and Son’s Place.

Harold’s I would have (and actually did) predicted and Mary Mac’s I can definitely see, however I was pleasantly surprised to see the inclusion of Ria’s and Panahar. I’ve never eaten at Son’s Place because it always appears to be closed when I go by it; further I was unaware of its (direct) connection to one Atlanta’s old-school establishments — Deacon Burton’s.

I’m curious to know which restaurants you would have hit had you been put in this position. You can say Alluvia at the Cheetah, but you know I won’t take your suggestions seriously then.

Deadbeat Dads Done In By Former Defense
I had the Seattle Seahawks as my defense at the beginning of the year and after a few weeks I gave up on them. To support this decision they have been horrible for the past month so I really thought that I was doing the right thing.

I knew I was in trouble when I was rooting for Seattle to have a bad game… especially when they were playing the Oakland Raiders. My defeat last night almost assures me that the East Atlanta Deadbeat Dads will be finishing out of the money. Crap!

I dunno, what would you suggest from these?

Isobel Campbell — “Milkwhite Sheets”

On Chomping And Stomping
The original plans for meeting up with Phil and Stacy were to go out to take photos around the beautiful water-filled rock quarry that the hash ran past last weekend. That idea was changed when we realized how cold it was going to be on Saturday so we chose a later start and attending Cabbagetown’s Chomp And Stomp in its place. If I was in a different place in my life I would have had a smashing time at Chomp And Stomp. Regardless we had a good, if not brief time there before walking over to Milltown Arms to have a few beverages. As the day went on friends of ours started joining us and festivities were kicked up a notch.

All of the early drinking led to an early bedtime. I swear I think that I was asleep by 7:30pm on Saturday night.

Sickday Sunday
It looks like I traded a day off on Friday for a day of being sick Sunday. I am not sure how it happened because I felt great up until the time that I awoke on Sunday.

I was sick all goddamn day yesterday. I spent the entirety of the day on the couch sneezing my head off and feeling miserable.

The Damn “Paulie Do” List
With the discovery that I have a leak coming from the toilet in my “master” bedroom I now realize that there is at least one chore which needs to be completed for each of the rooms on the main floor of my house. Fuckin’ A! Admittedly some of these chores have been on the list for years because I either don’t have the skills to accomplish them (or in some cases the number of hands necessary) and I have yet to hire someone to do the chore, or they are of minor inconvenience so I’ve just put the chore off indefinitely.

My house turned fifty years old this year. I found out early in my tenure that the process of fixing one problem begets another which is why I don’t go gung ho for fixing things.

ITP Flickr Pic
On Friday I was playing around with the mini-mannequins and my camera.

Carrying Over The Threshold

Aw Bullshit!
All weekend long my home internets were crawling because I was downloading Penn & Teller’s Bullshit. It was a huge download and took all damn weekend to complete. I never would have guessed that downloading it would have taken so long (since I was BitTorrenting it) or hampered my connection so much, but once I started the download I was committed to letting it finish. I sure hope that Season 4 was worth all of the bother it put me through this weekend.

Kentucky Finally Feels The Wrath
I admit that Dave and Mary started growing on me. I knew that they weren’t going to win this Amazing Race, not even with their Six Pack alliance. I thought that the “new twist”, the Intersection, was rather lame especially since it was during a leg where one team was marked for elimination. Oh well, I guess they need to try and throw a few curveballs in occasionally. Here is the order that I hope the remaining teams depart
- Alabama
- Rob & Kimberly
- The Male Models
- The Beauty Queens
- The Cho Bros

The “nice guy” moniker may be fake, I’m not sure since I think that part of the reason they wanted to keep the Six Pack together was because they knew that they could beat the other two teams. However, much like the hippies from last season I like these guys and would like to see them win.

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…

Another Mental Health Friday

There are days that I wake up and go happily in to work; there are days that I wake up and struggle to go in to work; and then there are days like today that I wake up and decide that it’s just not going to happen…

Today I just decided that I needed a break from it all.

Oddball Thought Of The Day
I haven’t gotten a haircut in nearly two months. I’m not sure why, I just haven’t gotten around to it.

I Might Be Leaving My Heart In San Francisco
While I am slowly burning up the remaining paid vacation days that I have for this year I am busily deciding how to spend next year’s. San Francisco keeps popping up much the same way that Chicago did earlier this year. I am contemplating a late-February, early-March trip to coincide with the week-long music festival known as Noise Pop. If anyone has tips for trips to San Francisco I’d like to hear them.

No Surprises On Survivor
Does anyone else think that Jonathon sounds like Alan Alda? Close your eyes next week and listen.

So the roller girl got sent flying off the island. I think that all of the episodes between now and merger time will be fairly uneventful — even with CBS’s teaser for next week.
