Hartwell On Hold

Humberto and a bunch of ineffective planning have come in and altered my weekend plans. Tonight I was to head up to Lake Hartwell for a weekend of drinking, laughs, and camping. With a forecast of 100% chance of rain and the knowledge that I am nowhere near prepared to travel, I have decided to stay in the hood tonight and reconsider my options tomorrow morning.

Traffic Can Be So Finicky
I had to work later than normal last night since I had arrived later than normal. With the remnants of Humberto moving through I knew that leaving at 5pm wouldn’t be smart anyway. My journey home was fine until I hit the Lenox Mall area. At that point everything came a halt. Figuring that sitting in traffic would only serve to annoy me I turned the car around and headed to the mall for some dinner (Chinese). The plan was also to walk off dinner but I was in no mood to be in the traffic that was Lenox Mall shoppers either. I thought about doing a little websurfing via my BlackJack, but of course AT&T’s coverage is shit there and couldn’t get anywhere. Upon leaving the mall thirty minutes after arriving things were not great, but at least they were much better than when I had arrived.

Getting home around 7:30pm - 8pm really screws with my sense of time however. I kept thinking that it was much earlier than it really was.

I Was Nearly Attacked!

This little guy (girl?) was out on its normal afternoon walk when it happened upon a guy with a strange apparatus in his hand (that would be me and my camera).

Late Night Makes For Rough Morning

After drinking way too many beers and returning home from The EARL at 1am I am struggling to get motivated.

Boy That Sounds Familiar
If you remember 1995 and listened to 99x back then you were probably at last night’s Meat Puppets show (unless of course you are Terri who had months to find a substitute teacher and blew me off. :P).

If some of the songs sounded more familiar than you expected them to, you might own the Meat Puppets latest CD and didn’t realize it. That is my affliction. While perusing my iTunes library this morning I discovered that I actually own their latest cd.

The Meat Puppets put on an energy-filled show to a mostly-filled room. The crowd seemed older than most crowds which frequent The EARL and oddly the room also seemed less smoky. The only song that the band seemed lackluster on was their biggest hit from back-in-the-day “Backwater”, which they played as their final song.

ITP Flickr Pic
This is another shot from the walkabout I did the other day.

X Marks The Spot, Twice

This is located behind Amsterdam Outlets in midtown. I tried to get the railroad crossing “X” to be within the windmill’s “X”.

Will Thirteen Be An Unlucky Number?
The other day I became a pseudo-season ticket holder for the Atlanta Thrashers. I wound up getting a single ticket for their “All-Star 13 Game” package.

I have always wanted to be a real season ticket holder, but the cost of hockey games is way to high for me, not to mention the additional costs associated with games (read “beer money”).

The Ballad Of Wounded Knee

If there is an appearance at George’s tonight in my future I shan’t be running. The slight pain in my left knee, which feels very ACL-like, has me concerned. And since I will need to be pulling a handful of seven-hour standing days at career fairs over the next three weeks I am going to play it safe. Also, I’ll be attending the Meat Puppets show at The EARL tonight, so I may need a nap prior to the show.

Georgia Tech Recruiting: Like Spending A Night In A Bar
For some reason our table was a bit slow yesterday. As I stood there watching others exchange information it kind of reminded me of the many nights I stood in bars wondering why I couldn’t hook up. Yesterday provided me with no further insight unfortunately.

The food for the event was catered by Atlanta Bread Company, who if they were the menu planners, made some interesting choices. For breakfast I picked up a wrapped bacon (yea!), egg, and cheese (every sandwich had cheese on it) bagel only to find out that the bagel was a poppyseed bagel. While I love poppyseeds the thought of having one stuck in my teeth haunted me the entire morning. For lunch I picked up a boxed-sandwich lunch which had a turkey and cheese (more cheese, do Wisconsinites own ABG?) sandwich — and the cheese was American. Huh? The classic turkey and cheese sandwich is made with Swiss cheese, don’t they know that?

ITP Flickr Pic
No shots from the career fair yesterday. I packed my camera but the threat of afternoon rain curtailed any photography time I had hoped to get in.

Elton's Sing-A-Long

I chuckled the other day when I saw the murals on the nightclub in Amsterdam Outlets (Amsterdam Walk?). All of the characters in their mural were gay icons. Not surprising, I know.

Marta: Same As It Ever Was
I chose to ride Marta to Georgia Tech yesterday. I could have driven, but I didn’t want to be bothered with parking on Tech’s campus.

As I transferred from the East/West line to the North/South line I remember just how much of a pain in the ass it was to ride Marta. Apparently the train was a little behind schedule (hot that one really exists) and the train that arrived at the station consisted of only four cars. Needless to say it was packed. Luckily I was only riding for three stops so the nuts-to-butts condition were bearable. At my destination I remembered that you need to “badge out” of the system now (mark my words, destination-based fares are on the way), so I had to dig out my Breeze card again so that I could get away. More frustration. Yes, that’s what will get people riding mass transit.

September 11th

I remember it all too well. That’s all you will get from me about that today.

Let The Recruiting Begin!
Today marks the Fall college recruiting season. I start my season today right here in our own backyard on the campus of Georgia Tech.

Cook’s Warehouse Assistant : Is It A Raw Deal?
Last night I attended the orientation to become a Cook’s Warehouse Chef’s Assistant. Well, it’s not that easy. I found out last night that I also have to take (read “pay to take”) their Knife Skills course before I can become an assistant.

The selling points of becoming an assistant are that

  • I can learn skills and meet people (but I’d be spending 45 minutes before class prepping, 45 minutes after class cleaning, and working through the entire class)
  • Every six classes for which I am an assistant I receive a $80 gift card for future classes as a student (which I assume covers two classes)
  • I’d receive a 10% discount on Cook’s Warehouse non-sale items (their prices aren’t exactly discounted)

I don’t know… It seems to me that I’d be required to work really hard for little benefit. I’m not getting to really “attend the classes” you work. I am not guaranteed a “taste” of the food I helped prepare (therefore I’d have to eat dinner prior to arriving at the class to make sure that I am not starving by the time it is over).

Two of the interesting “off topic” things I heard last night were

  1. The guy next to me apparently met Alton Brown at a gas station on his way to the class
  2. I heard that Julia from Hell’s Kitchen might be one of the “celebrity chefs” at this year’s Taste of Atlanta

ITP Flickr Pic
It’s muscadine season in Atlanta. My friend Ralph mentioned that muscadine grapes were in season in our area. I said that I had never seen muscadine grapes growing here. Yesterday while killing time before the orientation class I found this.

It's Muscadine Time In Atlanta

I was tempted to eat one, but wasn’t 100% sure that it was a muscadine vine so I didn’t.

CD Pick Of The Week
If you can’t find something you like in the twenty-four new releases today then just grab your Barry Manilow 8-track tape, get into your AMC Gremlin, and get the hell out of here.

As for me I might be out purchasing the new Shout Out Louds (”Our Ill Wills”) or Black Francis (”Bluefinger”). I might try to give them a listen somewhere first.

Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow

Partying on the other hand is a completely different matter.

Sunday Running Is All About The Four B’s
Bacon, Bagels, Beer, and Bullshit. I think that last one is correct. Maybe it stands for Bathroom?

As the host of our Sunday Runners’ Group you have responsibilities.

  • Provide routes of varying lengths for people to run.
  • Provide breakfast, usually in the form of bagels and some egg dish (I substituted biscuits for bagels).
  • Provide beer, and potentially mimosas or bloody marys.
  • Do not get angry if all of the beer in your refrigerator is consumed; do not get angry if all of the beer in your refrigerator is not consumed.

Yesterday I had a great group of friends arrive at the house for my turn to host. I provided bacon, an egg-sausage-cheese casserole, biscuits, and some scrambled eggs for the vegetarians.

Try as I might I couldn’t convince everyone to get off of my carport and either into the house or back yard. Even disregarding my carjacking my carport is the most dangerous part of my house.

Luckily for me the last of the gang left some time after 4pm thus sparing me the grief of watching my Jets get crushed by the Patriots.

btw- If you happen to be in East Atlanta Village in the next day or so and see “Bacon Near” written on the ground in chalk then you now are part of the inside joke.

Who Let The Dogs Out?
Prior to everyone coming over to the house I went for my own walk/run on which I made some chalk markings hoping to stop people from getting lost. On my journey I encountered four dogs wandering neighborhoods.

While I have never been attacked by a dog, I have been chased into my own house by one charging me one night. That moment put enough fear in me to be weary of dogs which are out for their own little stroll.

What the fuck, people? If you are a dog owner who can’t keep the dog from getting out of the yard then keep it in the house. If you can’t do that either then perhaps you shouldn’t be a dog owner.

(notice that I am not talking about Dawgs because they proved to have no bite on Saturday)

ITP Flickr Pic
My bar refrigerator has died.

Goodbye Old Friend

It was the last of the “free appliances”, which were left by the previous house owners when they vacated in 1999, to die. You know that this was old (fitting for my basement) because when was the last time that you saw an appliance with a simulated wood finish?

Goodbye old friend.

Panic On The Screen Of My iBook
Slowly but surely this laptop is hinting that it will soon be time to replace it. The latest incident occurred this morning when I had a kernel panic.

For the less geeky in the crowd, a kernel panic is bad. A panic occurs when hardware such as memory or the motherboard starts to become flaky, or some software error occurs which renders the system unusable until it is restarted.

Had this been a Windows box I would have also suspected that it was spyware/malware which caused me to reboot giving the software a chance to install itself into the system directories.

How Can I Get Jill Cordes In My Bedroom?
My friend Randy sent me an email letting me know that he had heard that the show My First Place was showing a house in East Atlanta (episode HMFP-706, but there is not much information about the show online). Upon researching the web site I noticed that Jill Cordes was once, but no longer, the host of the show. Poor lass, I am sure she is down on her luck right now and I just so happen to be single at the moment…

Also, there seems to be no validity to the rumor that HGTV will be starting a series “My First Foreclosure” any time soon.

How Can A Four-Day Work Week Feel So Long?

My schedule has been hectic this week. I am ready for a semi-relaxing weekend. The plan is simple. Tonight — ignore everyone, clean my house for Sunday. Tomorrow — organize my life, discover the cure for cancer if time permits. Sunday — run, cook breakfast for myself and friends, eat, drink, drink, drink, watch football whilst drinking, pass out alone (by choice) with a drink in my hand. This is all I want; no more, no less.

Traffic Shaping
A lot of tax dollars are being spent in order to “improve” the flow of traffic. Have you been to the top side of 285 lately? Traffic signals are being installed on the on-ramps.

Yesterday I read that they are proposing underground traffic near North Druid Hills Road in part because of the new Sembler “mini-city” that is to be constructed where it intersects with Briarcliff Road. Two words — Cluster. Fuck.

Long ago I realized that traffic in this town has completely shaped my life, if not my body along with it. Trips around town are planned, and heaven forbid I try to go anywhere quickly around 5pm. If I want to be in the Highlands by 6pm I’d better get out of work by 4:30pm so that I don’t have to rush or experience road rage (note: and that wasn’t even good enough as my 12-mile back-road commute took me ninety minutes).

This isn’t part of the American Dream that I was sold in the 1970s…

As Long As The Crack Of Dawn Is The Only Crack I’m On, Then I Am Alright
I must have dropped off to sleep some time around 10 pm. I know it must have been early (by my standards) because I awoke at 4 am this morning and was wide awake. Getting out of the house by 6:00 am certainly makes for a better commute, and with any luck will also mean that I am out of the office before traffic becomes a Friday afternoon cluster fuck.

ITP Flickr Pic
I am failing miserably with my goal to shoot more. So, today I’ve plucked something out of my archive.

I Always Thought These Were Self Explanatory

This is from back in a better time…. May.

Feeling Regular
Yesterday I spent the latter half of the day at an office in Suwannee. Suwannee is what the old-timers would call a “fer piece” away from where I normally conduct my life. The fifty-plus minute drive back inside the perimeter was fairly unspectacular, but by the time I got itp I was hungry. I have been trying to be better with my eating habits lately, but last night I couldn’t resist the pull of New Century Chinese Buffet on Scott Blvd in Decatur. It was conveniently located, the food was decent, and the best part is that the woman recognizes me and is friendly to me.

I used to be a regular client at some of East Atlanta’s haunts and get “regular’s service” back then. However, in recent years I’ve become too infrequent of a customer at most places and get treated just like every other unknown.

Running From Reality

But not necessarily RealiTV.

Last night I was once again unable to make it to George’s by 6pm for my group run. Unlike last week traffic was not to blame, and I did not get out and run despite my tardy arrival. On the positive side I did leave fairly early after only two beers sharing some popcorn and nachos.

I’m A Happy Non-iPhone Owner
Apple slashed the price of the iPhone by $200 a mere two months after its introduction. While price cutting in the cell phone world is not unheard of, I am glad that I did not wait in line and then drop $600 for the phone.

I’m Not A Happy BlackJack Owner
I am frustrated with AT&T (Cingular, or whatever they call themselves). One of the reasons I switched to the BlackJack (and from Sprint to Cingular) was to pay (through-the-nose) in order to receive my email on my phone. This morning when I logged into my gmail account I had seven emails in my inbox. According to my phone I had no email. What the fuck AT&T?

ITP Flickr Pic
I needed a Mountain Dew in order to get me through yesterday. While suffering through a meeting I read the bottle’s label.

I'm No Math Wizard....

Somebody at PepsiCo can’t do math

The bottle is 20 ounces
If the number of calories per 8 ounces is 110
Then the number of calories in the bottle should be 275
Because the 8 * 2.5 = 20 and therefore 110 * 2.5 = 275

Sleeping Through Top Chef
I missed a good twenty minutes of last night’s Top Chef because I dosed off. (Does that indicate how compelling the episode was?) All I remember was that Brian won the QuickFire Challenge and won nothing but a bucket of pride, Casey (Little Bunny Foo Foo) won the Elimination Challenge along with a 17″ Macbook Pro (finally a decent reward), and Howie slit his own throat at least twice in the episode and therefore finally met his demise.

When News Isn’t ‘New’ And Fresh Air Isn’t “Fresh”
I am cutting ties with some of my news sources and podcasts. While I have been pleased with the subject matter of the past week’s “Fresh Air” podcasts they have all been repeats. It seems that a lot of this summer’s Fresh Air episodes have dipped into past interviews. Not very “fresh” if you ask me.

Other Marketing Baloney
“33% More Than Our 150 oz Bottle!”
“Our Longest Lasting Roll!”

These are two actual statements I read on products at Target the other day.

The first statement was on a 200 oz bottle of Tide. The intent of this marketing schlock is to make you think that you are getting more product for the same price. However, if you paid attention you’d notice that there is no mention of getting anything for free, and that the price of the 200 oz bottle was about 33% more than the price of the 150 oz bottle.

The second statement was on a package of Angel Soft toilet paper. Longest lasting roll? What the hell does that really mean? Does it mean that I will be able to wipe my butt more effectively? Does it mean that there is more paper on each roll? I think that it means nothing at all.

Oh, because these are products I constantly have purchased in the past I wound up buying both products. I guess that their bullshit worked on some level.

I’m Sorry What Did You Just Say?
Cingular? Huh? I thought that you were all about the “New AT&T”. If so, why did I see that “Cingular” was sponsoring the 18/58 Sports Updates on ESPNHD the other night. That just makes no sense to me.

ITP Flickr Pic

Standing At Attention

Because I am far from thrilled with the choices that I had for today’s post.

A Sentence Which Defines A City
I took this from an article in yesterday’s Atlanta Journal Constitution

The wreck occurred right after rush hour, about 8:30 p.m., near the Memorial Drive intersection and debris, spilled fuel and wrecked vehicles shut all five lanes of traffic, said Bryan Gunter, a spokesman for the DOT.

Yes, it says “right after rush hour, about 8:30 p.m.” I am not loving living here much any longer.

Ooooh, He’s A Little Runaway
Me.
Tonight.
George’s.
Will try to run.
Will hope that legs and knees will not hurt, and that new problem with foot stops bugging me.
Will try not to eat/drink too much.
Must get home early enough to be productive.

And One More Thing…
Last week I mentioned a purchase that I was going to make today. It’s not going to happen. Today I was going to upgrade my camera from a Nikon D50 to a Nikon D80. It’s not that I don’t want the D80 or that I think any significant price-drop is on the way, I have just decided to save a little money right now.

And for what it’s worth, Apple has a new product announcement (new iPods?) coming this afternoon.

I Am A Clutterphobe

I have finally figured it all out. After months of espousing the virtues of Peter Lynch’s book “It’s All Too Much” and talking about how good it felt to round up crap to get out of the house, I’m surprised it took me this long. I hate clutter. I have always strove to be a neat person, but I didn’t realize how much of a Felix Unger (Wikipedia’d for the younger readers in the audience.) I really was. In my world “uncluttered” is synonymous with “perfection.” This knowledge explains so much about me it’s almost frightening.

Another Failed Relationship
It’s the same old story…

Boy meets girl.
Boy sees girl for some time.
Girl leaves boy unexpectedly.

Except in my case the relationship was the one between me and the woman who has been cutting my hair for over a year. On Friday I received a call informing that Stephanie was no longer with the company and that my appointment had been turned over to Mark. I’m now in search of a new hair cutter. Let’s all hope that I find one much quicker than I find new girlfriends.

ITP Flickr Pic
I’ve got nothing better

If Only I Had More Time For This

Some days, like today, it feels that I am dragging toilet paper around with me.

Turning An iMac Into An iNsomniac
This was almost a perfect computer upgrade weekend. I completely wiped and reinstalled Mac OS X on my aging iBook (it’s good to clean out the entire system occasionally says the clutterphobe). I installed Photoshop Elements 4.0 on to the iBook and my old Windows machine. I installed iLife ‘08 and iWork ‘08 onto my iBook and iMac. And I installed Photoshop CS3 and my new Wacom tablet onto my iMac. Only the last of those tasks has caused me grief that I have been unable to fix.

Before installing the Wacom tablet I let my iMac go into power-saving sleep mode on its own after a specified period of inactivity. Sadly, with the Wacom tablet the system no longer does this. It has even taken to occasionally also not signaled the screen saver to start. Argh. My current solution, which is less than desirable, is to manually put the iMac to sleep when I am done using it.

If anyone out there has experienced this and conquered it, please let me know.

Time To Defend That Championship
Oh you think that I am talking about the Men’s NCAA National Champion Florida Gators? Nope. I am referring to the East Atlanta Deadbeat Dads. Yes, it’s fantasy football time and it’s time for the Fightin’ Double D’s to defend their crown. Sadly my team looks far inferior to last year’s bunch, but I’ll see what I can do with this rag-tag team of misfits.

CD Pick Of The Week
According to my source there are only three relevant CD releases out today. Of those I have only heard of one of the people in the list, that being Patti Scialfa. Not having heard a single thing from this release makes me think that I should take a pass for the week and suggest that you save your hard-earned pennies for a later day. (psst- there will be a shitload of good choices next week)

Starting New Means Breaking A Few Things

So I’ve temporarily settled on this theme. I don’t expect it to last a very long time. Changing themes has reminded me how many tweaks that I made to the old theme. It will take me a little while to get a lot of things back to the way they were.

Bear with me, won’t you?
