Returning Structure To My Life

My life is out of control. Today I will make efforts to change that.

When Choosy Drinkers Choose
Last night I had three entertainment options. Andy Hull (of Manchester Orchestra) performed a concert at the Drunken Unicorn. The Atlanta Bloggers resurrected their monthly meetings, this time at Fox Bros BBQ (a place I’d like to try some day). One of my Flickr friends had a birthday get-together at Cantina La Casita. Which did I choose? The one closest to home of course.

My dinner at La Casita consisted of two Negra Modelos, some chips, and two tacos. Overall I enjoyed the night out but I hung around longer than I should have. It was a little difficult to wake up this morning.

Google Is Letting Me Down
When I use “Drunken Unicorn Atlanta” in a Google search I’d like to have their website returned to me. Unfortunately it does not. This behavior seems to happen more often. Also, in addition to “Sponsored links” it seems that Google puts a little more weight on YouTube results (gee, I wonder if this has to do with Google owning YouTube).

More indication that this region needs rain.

No Fishing From Dock

Do you think that the fish feel cramped due to the lack of water?

Light, Camera, Action!
I am finally going to make a lighting purchase today. I will be buying a Alien Bees strobe with a soft box. Hopefully this will get me through the dark winter months which are headed our way.

No George’s For Paulie
In part it has something to do with last week. In part it has something to do with events which have transpired in my life this week. Regardless, I will be skipping George’s this evening.

Run hard; drink responsibly; drive safely my friends.

My Fortune Should Read “You Will Never Catch Up”
I have been falling way behind on my fortune cookie fortune updates. Here are some I’ve received recently

  • A fond memory will soon lead to a renewed old friendship.
  • Respect the views of others. You will end up ahead.
  • Lucky you. Get out your party clothes. The clean ones.
  • Your dearest wish will come true.

Yes, I eat a lot of Chinese food.

Making A Big Media Move v2.0
I am about to move my media storage — again. Recently I moved everything from a Windows box to a NAS hard drive. However, I have been unimpressed with the speed at which data moves to and from the NAS drive. So, I have decided to make a double move. I am planning on moving my media to my iMac and use the NAS drive as a backup storage device.

This move will also all but make my Windows machine redundant. I have a hard time parting with my hardware so I am not sure what fate this machine will have. I will most likely shut it down for a while to make sure that I really don’t need it before deciding its fate.

If you’ve wondered if Georgia is really having a drought this year let me help you answer that

Not Quite Like The Brochures

YES.

The Next Iron Chef Men’s Club
Well that didn’t take very long. Two weeks into The Next Iron Chef and both women contestants have been eliminated. This of course means that my personal favorite, Jill Davie, was eliminated this week.

In this week’s episode the chefs got had to play Mad Scientist. During their elimination challenge they had to use high-tech devices, extreme cooking techniques, and chemicals in order to create innovative dishes. I can’t recall these techniques being used often on Iron Chef, but I could be misremembering.

CD Pick Of The Week
I am a big fan of R.E.M.’s but I cannot endorse the purchase of a live disc from them. I’ve seen them in concert a few times, and while the experience is great, their studio sound is much more satisfying to my ears.

If the Jimmy Eat World was a Jimmy’s Chicken Shack (turn the wayback machine to 1996 — more on this later this week) release I would highly endorse it.

Because I don’t have much information about all but one of the remaining bands that leaves Neil Young. Say what you will about Neil Young but he has been able to put out relevant music his entire career.

I Ate A Cheeseburger For Breakfast

One of the things I love about being an “adult” is not having to conform to conventional eating standards. Yesterday morning I didn’t have much selection in the house, but I did have the makings for a cheeseburger. When you think about it, eating a cheeseburger for breakfast is not that much different than having a sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich — hell, it may even be healthier.

A Musical For Those Who Don’t Like Musicals
On Friday I meet up with Stacy to see “The Water Coolers: An Office Musical” at Horizon Theatre.

While I am not a huge fan of musicals I will recommend seeing this one. The songs are by-and-large clever, and with the exception of the song about Palm PDA’s, are somewhat timeless captures of modern-day office life. The cast consists of five individuals who do a good job of delivering their lines (and songs in this case) as well as interacting with the audience on occasion.

I needed something to cheer me up, and this picture does just that.

All Hail The “Opposite Theory”
Remember how I mentioned that I was going to use the George Costanza “Opposite Theory” this week for my college football picks? Well, I did, and beat everyone in the entire game for the week! Not only do I get bragging rights this week, I’ll also score a free lunch from my side bet.

While I fully intend to keep using this method it will get a little more difficult. I now will have to figure out if I am picking the opposite, or am I picking the one that I think that I want to be the opposite. It’s all so damn confusing.

Too Much Hashing Causes Me To Miss Concerts
I had tentatively earmarked a night at The EARL to see last night’s Office / Earlimart show. The reason it was a tentative schedule was because I knew that yesterday was a Black Sheep Hash day, and to complicate matters further the hash was in Alpharetta.

While I returned home with barely enough time to shower and head to The EARL there was no way that I was in a condition to do so. I was tired, beaten up, and coming down from the beer buzz that I had earlier.

Oh well, I’ll just add it to the long list of shows I missed this year.

ITP Is Three? OMFG!

I now understand why women have never taken to me. They understand that I am an unfit parent who routinely forgets his child’s birthday. On October 8th my blog turned three and I completely forgot. I wonder if there is an age limit for becoming a priest, because I doubt that I will ever be considered for partnerhood again.

However I Do Have A Shred Of Responsibility
I returned to the world of live music last night, but had to leave before Pistolero’s set started. From the pace that I saw them getting set up I surmised that their set wouldn’t start until about midnight. Theoretically I could have stayed to see them, but there would have been no way in hell that I could have awoken for work in due time. Pity.

As for Warm In The Wake I was pleased. I was able to talk to WITW’s lead singer before the show, although I forgot to tell him the story of the CD store in Gainesville. The five-piece band played a tight set to what appeared to be mostly friends and family. I was impressed enough with the music to purchase their new disc, although admittedly I don’t think it will be in heavy rotation any time soon.

As for the Clermont Lounge, um, yeah. I understand what people have said all these years, and I don’t see myself going back any time soon. It was interesting to look around to see the people who were in the Clermont Lounge to see a band as opposed to those who were regulars of the club. Surprisingly the sound in the small room was quite good. I didn’t roam to all corners to see how the sound distributed, but from where I was standing all seemed clear and loud.

While walking through Chamblee from the Marta station to get my car I saw this in the window of an antiques store.

Air Canada

As an aside, what’s happening to the antiques market in Chamblee? Many of the establishments have closed. Are they all being pushed out due to the desire to erect one hundred more “mixed-use condo” developments?

Will It Be Stereotypical Tonight?
When last I inhabited the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club for brisket and beer before going to see a play at Horizon Theatre the temperature hovered around 100. Tonight I think that things may be a little different.

The last play my friend Stacy (the original “sans-’e'” Stacy) and I saw there was “The Bluest Eye.” On that night the subject matter of the play seemed to draw an audience of exclusively African-American patrons.

Tonight Stacy and I will be seeing “The Water Coolers: An Office Musical.” It will be interesting to see the makeup of tonight’s audience….

I’m Calling It “The Costanza Theory”
The past two weeks I have proven that I am a terrible college football matchup picker (when accounting for point spreads of course). My average rate of correct picks has been about 33%. This week I picked all of my winners, and then reversed all picks. That’s right, I am doing exactly what George Costanza did in that one episode of Seinfeld — if every thing I do is wrong, then the opposite must be right.

To make sure that I really believed in my new theory I bet a co-worker that my picks will score more than his. The winner will get a free lunch next week.

Who knows what else this can be used on? “Hi, my name is Paulie and I have not had a date in over a year. I like to drink a lot of beer and constantly whine about my weight. Would you like to go out for dinner?”

“Beer Is For Runners!”

There is a great line in Glengarry Glen Ross when Blake tells Levene that “Coffee is for closers!” Last night I was far from a closer when it came to running, in fact I was much closer to a loser than a closer.

I briefly convinced myself that it would be okay to go into George’s for one beer, but almost as soon as I did I repeated the line “Coffee is for closers! Beer is for runners!” in my head and left.

I Took Out The Trash, Your Job Is To Take It
Being at home on a Wednesday for the first time in a month my trash can was “ripe” to put it politely. I was actually excited to take it to the curb and doubly as pissed when I arrived home last night to find that it had not gotten emptied.

At first I wondered if the delay was caused by Columbus Day on Monday. Some times the trash pickup is delayed by a day when a holiday occurs on a Monday. However, when I checked my neighbor’s can across the street I found out that their can had been emptied.

Looks like I’ll have a stinky carport for yet another week. Argh!

I know at least one person who reads this blog can explain this horse’s behavior.

I Double-Horse Dare You To Lick That Post

I drove by this horse at least three times and it was posed like this. When I finally decided to stop the car and snap its photo it dropped its head from the post for a second, and almost as if it knew that all I wanted to do was to take a picture, returned it to the post.

How Much Would You, Or Did You, Pay?
Being a fan of Radiohead’s work I am intrigued by their new CD release business model. As of yesterday the disc is available electronically at a price chosen by the buyer. Yes, that the price is chosen by the buyer.

Being way behind with my life’s chores I have not gone to download the disc yet. I am curious –

If you bought it how much did you pay?
If you will buy it, what do you think is a fair price?

I am thinking about something on the order of $6 – $8. Why so low? Because the band has eliminated many middle-men (cd pressing costs, some of the distribution costs, most marketing costs, retail markup) and therefore should not receive the going price for a CD sold in a store. I am not looking to steal music, but I am not willing to pay anything more than I feel is a fair price either.

I Am Going To The Clermont Lounge
It will probably surprise each and every one of you to find out that I have never been to one of Atlanta’s icons, the Clermont Lounge. One reason for this is that I don’t really care for strip clubs. Why would I want to go somewhere only to leave broke and teased? Another reason is that the Clermont is not exactly know for its “talent.”

Then why go tonight? Thanks to Rich I have been given a free pass to the Warm in the Wake / Pistolero show being held there.

If the name “Warm in the Wake” sounds familiar, it’s because that’s the band I “discovered” while in a used CD store in Gainesville, Florida only to find out that they hail from the Atlanta area. Back then I mentioned that the were releasing a new CD and that if they’d send me a copy that I would review it. My silence should tell you the outcome of that request.

Don’t Look Now, That Rain Was A Cold Front

While last night’s rain will have minimal impact on our drought, it will accomplish the task of ushering in colder air and dropping our daytime highs below 80 for the first time in many months. It may not happen today, but you just wait…

What Is The Purpose Of Water Towers?
I am serious.

While driving around rural Georgia I saw many water towers. While I can perhaps understand their need prior to modern-day plumbing, I cannot for today’s purposes. Do towns still store their water in these vessels for distribution? How do they get filled?

Explain it to me, or point me at a web site. I really would like to know.

ITP Flickr Pic
You can find a lot of things when you are not necessarily looking for them.

Old Cordele Drive-In

Apparently Cordele, like many Georgia towns, used to have a drive-in theater. I had no idea, but while driving from Cordele to Vienna to attend the Big Pig Jig I found its marquee. Even more bizarre was that I peered through the trees and could see the back of the screen.

Watching The Worst-Kept Secret In The World
Last night I watched the final four episodes of the 2007 World Series of Poker’s Main Event. Having found out the winner months ago I was watching just to see what bizarre events transpired.

At one point last night I was confused and disturbed to watch one of the participants (the eventual winner) and one of the other participant’s girlfriend square off during one hand with calls to Jesus for luck; as far as I could tell the young lady was even quoting Scripture.

Now I am far from the most religious person that you will ever meet (see also my rants against “Big Brother 8″’s Jameka and Amber, and “Survivor: China”’s Leslie), but doesn’t it seem odd to be calling for The Almighty’s power to win, especially at gambling? Aren’t poker winnings ill-gotten gains?

Besides, I always figured Jesus to be more of a Black Jack player….

Finding Happiness By Eliminating The Unhappiness?
It’s funny when the things that bring me happiness don’t. It doesn’t take long to find out that I love to eat and drink beer. However the affects of the two items, along with my inability to motivate myself to exercise, have contributed to the one issue that makes me the most sad — my weight.

Having said that, I am planning on being at George’s tonight to run/walk. Please don’t feed me or offer me free beer. Mine will be a short night, both in distance and post-run festivities as I am still in the process of catching up with tasks around my house. Oh the travails of the home owner whose banks go out of business while traveling for three weeks in a row.

The Password Is — “Hemorrhage”

When I took my car in for front brake repair yesterday I had no idea that it would cost me $440 (Well, $439.50 if you factor in the $0.50 I saved by not going through the toll booth). Fuck. In addition to brake pads I had to get new rotors. Yes, I know that it would be cheaper to do these things myself, but I prefer to have professionals do these sort of things.

What’s the old saying?

“Give a man a fish and he eats for a day.
Hire a man to fish for you and you have someone to bitch out later.”

I have been hemorrhaging money of late and need to reverse the trend pronto.

It’s Like Top Chef With A Side Of Iron Chef
Iron Chef is looking for a new Iron Chef and they have stolen Top Chef’s format to do so. Last night I was able to watch Sunday night’s premiere episode of the The Next Iron Chef and I really liked what I saw.

At first I was surprised to see names I know, especially since the two contestants I recognized used to be chefs on Food Network. Aaron Sanchez and Michael Symon were once a team on a short-lived series known as “Melting Pot”.

It should come as no surprise that I am rooting for Jill Davie…

While I understand why this competition is using the same style employed by Top Chef (one reward challenge, one elimination challenge) I wish that they wouldn’t have. It would have been much cooler to score each week Iron Chef style (awarding points for flavor, plating, and originality), keeping all contestants for each show, and having the winner be the person who accumulated the highest score. Instead a chef who has one bad week can be eliminated regardless of how well he/she has done previously.

My original pick to win was Michael Symon because of his former ties to Food Network, and his hometown relation to judge Michael Ruhlman — both hail from the Cleveland Ohio area. Much to my surprise Symon was nearly eliminated first.

I will continue to watch, at least until Jill Davie gets eliminated.

Down But Not Out

The sky was so gray that I felt like I had to go black and white.

I’m Still Scrambling
And I’m not talking about eggs.

It’s going to take me weeks to catch up on the tasks I ignored the past three weeks. One of the tasks I caught up with last night was mail (the type not delivered yesterday thanks to Columbus Day). Wouldn’t you know that I’d find coupons for car service hours after I returned home after paying $440!. Talk about adding insult to financial injury.

iTunes Is A Shitty Music Manager
I am continually frustrated with iTunes. Recently I decided that I was going to swallow the last of the Apple Kool-Aid by casting off third-party CD ripping software and allowing iTunes to take care of that task.

Talk about problematic. On my first attempt to award iTunes complete control of my music library management it only imported part of the cd; after my third attempt at ripping and importing it finally succeeded. This was mildly annoying and because of the failures took at least ten minutes longer than my old method. This morning I inserted a CD into the computer and iTunes never acknowledged its presence. I attempted many things to get iTunes to “see it”, but it never did.

I am now regurgitating that last mouthful of Apple Kool-Aid and returning to my old method.

CD Pick Of The Week
Remember last week when I told you to save your pennies for today? Here is why. Check out the list of releases that I like.

  • Band Of Horses — “Cease to Begin”
  • Beirut — “The Flying Club Cup”
  • Fiery Furnaces — “Widow City”
  • Robert Pollard — “Coast To Coast Carpet Of Love”
  • Robert Pollard — “Standard Gargoyle Decisions”
  • She Wants Revenge — “This Is Forever”

Oh, and there is this up-and-coming band called Radiohead doing a self-release tomorrow as well.

In case you are wondering if I screwed up by including two lines from Robert Pollard, I did not. Fans of Pollard know that he is know for his incredible song writing production.

Living Out Of Luggage: Over — For Now

I am back ITP for the foreseeable future. Woo! Hoo!

In And Out
I landed at Hartsfield on Friday, and returned home to grab my mail and pack another bag with t-shirts and underwear for the weekend. Three hours later (no, it didn’t take that long to pack) I was back on the road. The destinations for the weekend were Cordele, GA (for a hotel room) and Vienna, GA (to attend the Big Pig Jig).

The drive to Cordele was circuitous to say the least. I set Jill The GPS on “Avoid Highways” mode and she did a fine job of following orders. If fact, she did too fine job. When I realized that near Perry, GA I was crossing I-75 for at least the second time I decided to take control away from Jill. It was at this time I found the Georgia National Fair (when did our state become a nation?) and saw that jumping back on to US 41 would take me all the way to Cordele.

The gloomy skies that I landed in cleared on the way down and hopes for a decent weekend started.

My Head Wasn’t Cloudy, But The Sky Sure Was
Upon waking Saturday I was disappointed to see that the clear night sky had given way to clouds in the morning.

Around 11am I headed to the Big Pig Jig fair grounds. I was astonished to see that the grounds were covered with semi-permanent structures. I talked to one of the teams who were participating in the barbecue competition and they told me that they lease a plot of land from the county and then build their own structures. Most of the teams in competition return to Vienna year after year.

I walked around looking at everything and taking photos of the grounds (Sorry Ray, I don’t think that I will be an accomplished people photographer any time soon.) for about an hour. With the skies looking ominous and the realization that the line to eat “competition bbq” was going to take a long time to shrink, I decided to head out.

Being At The Right Place At The Wrong Time
My destination after the Big Pig Jig was Andersonville, GA. My hope was that I could outrun the drizzle and hike around the Civil War town. Unfortunately when I arrived I realized that there was a Civil War reenactment occurring (this may happen often) and that the sleepy little village was packed. At this point in my trip I couldn’t deal with another crowd, so I never left my car.

Damn, It Was Almost A Great Weekend
Oh sure my picking college winners sucked, but if the Florida Gators’ defense could have stepped up and won it for the team on Saturday night all would have been forgiven. Instead they collapsed, just like all of my teams have been doing this season. And to make matters worse (for me) I think that they have at least one more loss in them this season.

Delta Take Me Home — So I Can Go Away Again

Nary a shutter snap has been heard on this trip…. Again there will be no photo today.

Three Weeks Of Travel Has Taken Its Toll
Well, it has really been the three weeks of eating out (three meals) and having a beer or two with each meal combined with the complete lack of exercise. I feel incredibly sluggish and thankful that my stint of traveling for work is coming to an end.

While In Raleigh You Should Visit Schoolkids
I had a break in the action for lunch yesterday and hoofed it over to Schoolkids Records. My effort was rewarded as I was able to find the (fairly) new release from Foreign Born in the used bin. W00t!

Rats! The Flight Appears Full
As I have learned to do recently I checked in using the kiosk for my return trip home. Recently I have had good luck changing my seat to an exit row, but today I have not been fortunate. The only two exit row seats were middle seats, and I think that I’d rather take my chances in an aisle seat instead.

While In Alpharetta, GA Try The Breckenridge?
My friends and I went out for dinner last night at an ale house that sports and impressive beer list. Of course I was please. Whilst perusing the beer menu I saw that they had an amber ale from Breckenridge Brewery, but was more than a little confused when the identified the beer being from Alpharetta, GA. Can anyone shed a little light on this?

We stopped at a beer store to pick up some libations for the evening and saw no mention of the beer’s origination being anything further east of Breckenridge, CO.

I’m Feeling Kneedy

Lately, standing for six hours has been no joy for my knee. After time it (left ACL) becomes sore and bothersome. I am sure that it is also linked to my desire to some day again wake up and not have my first thought of the day be “Crap, I need to lose weight.” The knee bone is connected to the fat – bone.

NC State : The Career Fair With A Focus Problem
I consider myself to be an expert in the field of engineering career fairs. Seven years of recruiting engineers combined with the past three solid weeks of attending college career fair backs up my assertion.

Yesterday was one of the strangest days of recruiting that I have ever experienced. During most of the career fairs that I work I usually see one or two resumes for people who did not attend the university hosting the career fair. However yesterday’s event was open to all. Yesterday I saw resumes from as far away as Cincinnati, Ohio (keep in mind the event was held in Raleigh, North Carolina); I saw resumes for schools for people who didn’t come to our booth when their school (Clemson University for example) hosted a career fair event; I saw a resume for a person who visited our booth when we had a representative at the University of Tennessee, but she wanted to make sure that we had her resume, so she came to Raleigh to give us another.

One nearby booth particularly amused me — although I won’t name them since they are a competitor. Word had obviously hit the street that they hire foreign students because they had a back-log of Indian / Pakistani students all day long. At one point I looked over and wondered if they had a “Hot Curry Now” neon sign on their booth that I could not see. Unfortunately for the Frito-Lay booth that was near this company the students waiting in the line to talk to the software development company had no problem raiding the Frito Lay snack display while doing so.

It’s Beerknurd You Nerd
While in Raleigh I’d be remiss if I didn’t make a stop at The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium (check out their URL to understand the title of this section). For the Atlantans in the crowd who have not been to The Flying Saucer think “Taco Mac” and you’ll understand why I love it so.

As is par for the course where ever I go, Flying Saucer was out of the first beer that I ordered (Duck Rabbit Amber Ale), so I switched to the beer special for the night — something from the Foothills brewery.

btw- while looking at the Flying Saucer’s website I discovered that beer critic Michael Jackson passed away at the end of August. I am surprised that this is the first I have heard of this.

More Worries About The Weather
It appears now that I will be escaping the bad weather predicted for Raleigh. Now I am focused on the outlook for south Georgia. My current plans are to head down to south Georgia (Cordele / Vienna) for a photography excursion and a stroll around the annual Big Pig Jig barbecue competition. However, the weather forecast for the weekend is sketchy (of course) and I am trying to decide whether or not I should spend the money on a hotel if the weather refuses to cooperate.

Shhhh, Please Don’t Ruin For Me Damn You Internets!
Last night was the finale of Top Chef. While I was back in my hotel room in time (and managed to stay awake to at least 9pm), Bravo was not offered on the TV. Crud!

I didn’t know who won, until I absentmindedly tried to Google the URL for the show and the first thing that popped up mentioned the winner. Curses!

Fear not, I won’t spoil it for the rest of you…
