I wish that I had half a mind to tune up my road bike last night instead of just sitting on my ass for two-plus hours watching Cinderella Man. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie even after getting an alarming System Error on my XBOX360 upon my first attempt to boot it up in some time. I swear that if my XBOX360 gives me a Red Ring Of Death I shall never buy another product from Microsoft.
If the bike were ready for action I’d consider popping on for a ride tonight instead of running; but it’s not, so I won’t. Along those lines I will most likely not be dropping in for a run at George’s tonight. I’m feeling incredibly anti-social at the moment and might need to go on a punishing solo run to beat the feeling out of me; it’s early however…
Read Along With Me
Today’s passage from Notes To Myself.
If I feel aversion toward someone, if I find myself ignoring or turning away from someone in a group, I am probably avoiding within myself what this person represents that is true about me.
To all who have helped me — Thanks.
I’m A Sucker For Punching Movies
As I mentioned above last night I watched “Cinderella Man.” The movie arrived in the now dead HD-DVD format so I dimmed the lights in the basement and cranked up the projector. At my side stood a half-consumed bottle of wine from Sunday, which by movie’s end was empty.
I’m a sucker for the “downtrodden man makes good” genre, especially when it’s sports-related, and even more especially when there is a shred of truth in the story. In case you never saw “Cinderella Man” it’s about a boxer named Jim Braddock who was an up-and-coming fighter whose career fell right along with the economy in The Great Depression. Through a fluke Braddock was given a second chance at fighting years after his boxing license was revoked. What transpired was an unbelievable rise to become World Champion after beating Max Baer (aka the father of Jethro) who at the time was not only believed to be unstoppable, but had previously killed two men in the ring through vicious beatings.

Here is Denny perusing my “To Do” list
Nowhere in the book is an entry “sit on your ass drinking wine, watching a movie.” Perhaps I should put entries like that into the book…
Flickr, Now With 100% More Video!
It looks like the timing of my purchase of a Flip Video Camera couldn’t be more perfect. As of yesterday popular photo-sharing website Flickr is now allowing the sharing of video as well. I’ve not yet figured out what my short-form video masterpiece will be, but when I do you can be sure that I will be announcing it here.
Scrubbing Update
On my way home yesterday I stopped in a different Target than the one in which I normally shop. Sure enough this Target had my Scrubbing Bubbles replacement brushes. I snapped up three packages so that I shan’t be running out any time soon. Just another example of “The Man” trying to keep me down with dirty toilets.

So yesterday I figured out that the 2 days of RAGBRAI I will be riding are going to be 75 miles and 67 miles, and there will be hills. I know, you all think Iowa is flat, but it isn’t, it has those long, grinding grades that totally suck. So, I’m going to have to actually start riding the road bike, instead of just talking about it. Hopefully tonight or tomorrow will the first of many rides in the evenings. (and, to start this during the pollen season, I’m thinking is crazy, but…..) And – The other plus to all this is I will get in better shape, and will hopefully lose a few pounds, since my class reunion is the other reason for going back to Iowa.
Dammit! I just realized that I forgot to watch Hell’s Kitchen last night. Man, I am losing it! I’ll have to go back-to-back with Top Chef tonight and give opinions tomorrow.
dude, save your record buying money for record store day next Saturday!
Maybe we can get Paulie OTP on a school night for a road ride. What do you think Paulie? Roswell ride tomorrow night? 25 miles of pure fun through historic Roswell?
@D.D.D.Dave: I forgot about that. I wonder if I should come down off the mountain Saturday to find a record store in Clayton.
@Bob: Perhaps. Send me a link so I can see what I’d be getting myself into. It would be nice to knock of 1/4th of my monthly mileage in one shot. 🙂
Bob – I’m all C group these days.
Paulie – http://www.bikeroswell.com/
Info in on the left side a short scroll down.
I’m trying to talk Amy into it, she is wanting to just ride the Greenway (mom/babysitter has plans at 7PM, so she has to ge back).
by the way Bob/Laura – shouldn’t that baby be here by now?? he/she wanted to come out so early not too long ago.
Cool! The ride starts at the Roswell City Hall at 6PM.

It’s also easier for me to commit to this Thursday since I am taking Friday off from work. I am supposed to go to Black Rock for camping this weekend but Mother Nature looks like she is going to piss on our parade.
Barb are you doing the Mayor’s ride? I might be up for 40…I’m sending it to the other half also.
Paulie, I am going to be punishing myself tonight also…my legs don’t hurt (finally) hopefully I can get 5 in without too much trouble.
No baby yet, I’m on a short leash though. I can’t be more than 20 minutes from the house. Officially we have 10 days but you never know.
I’m already going to have 20 miles under my belt for the day from riding to work so I’ll ride what ever group you want to ride with. I like the B group route so I usually do that. Most of the road weenies there won’t give you the time of day so I always end up riding alone.
the only thing God hates more than Black Rock Mt is Little Easy’s Birthday hash…
Oh yeah – Mayor’s ride for sure (but usually I only ride the 20, there are lots of hills on the 40) and then hanging watching the Crit all afternoon on the lawn drinking beer with the Mayor.
Bob – I only say the C group cuz it is the slowest group……
> the only thing God hates more than Black Rock Mt is Little Easy’s Birthday hash…
True Dat.
>lots of hills on the 40
Bring em on!!!
Up the creek is the following week…I really need to get more time on the road bike (she still doesn’t have a name either)
I’ll try to plan for a Thursday night, maybe next week?
okay – I can try to do the 40, but remember, I’m a slow climber…….. and some of the neighborhood hills are insanely steep.
I say we start a D group. We’ll follow the B route but slower and we can end at a bar 🙂
> some of the neighborhood hills are insanely steep.
Did you move to Mableton? (okay so only Paulie will get that reference)
Yeah, my mouth might be writing a check my body can’t cash.
Paulie, Brad and I are going to start biking soon, you can always join us.
Tomorrow night = 25 miles in Roswell @ 6pm
20/40 hilly ride is where and when?
Hilly ride is here http://www.bikeroswell.com/Mayors_Ride/mayors_ride.html
Record Store Day is actually on the 19th…not this saturday.
the participating stores are Criminal/Wax/Ella Guru/Decatur CD I think Circle Sky might be involved as well.
Awful lot of OTP planning go on here… and no one has mentioned Yuengling yet today.
damn Debbie – I was just realizing that. And someday (maybe) Paulie will realize OTP isn’t all that bad.
@D.D.D.Dave: On the 19th I’ll be in Nashville, I think I can find a record store there…
@Debbie / Barb: Entirely too much OTP discussion. OTP is EVIL!!!! (that goes for you southern OTPers as well) 😛
Yuengling!
On my Sunday ride I was chased by a most ferocious pile of pocket lint called a dog I have ever seen… and the little ba$tard was fast, too. I’ll work on a hilly route for all you climbers out there.
OTP evil, huh? What I’m figuring out is there are little pockets of goodness OTP!

Grimey’s is participating…I’m sure that there will be some great instores that day!
