From The Office Of The Mundane

I spent nearly an entire night moving data around to different hard drives in the name of “organization.” Am I done? Nope. Am I getting there? Yep. It amazed me how many times the same file had been store in different directories thanks to programs such as iTunes and iPhoto. It’s no wonder why I run out of hard drive space so quickly.

Unfortunately another recurring issue that I encountered was the inability of OS X’s Copy command to have any common sense. After moving shit around I decided to get one good, albeit temporary, backup by performing a mass copy to one massive hard drive. Of course when I awoke I was greeted with mysterious error numbers and partially copied directories and not the hard drive containing the complete backup as I hoped.

If you are going to write a copy command please do one of the following
1. Make it so rock-solid it can’t fail.
2. If you cannot accomplish #1 then at least provide a detailed error log and don’t cancel the copy based on the inability to copy one file.
Is that too much to ask? I don’t think so.

Read Along With Me
Today’s passage from Notes To Myself.

I get angry at Gayle when she asks me to do something if I sense that in refusing to do what she asks I will demonstrate that I am not the way I like to thing of myself.

To all who have helped me — Thanks.

Mother Nature Fooled Me Yet Again
When I got home last night I intended to go on a short jog in order to get the pendulum swinging back toward the side of exercise. However as I looked at the radar I saw a large and powerful thunderstorm heading toward East Atlanta. Even though this meant that I wouldn’t be going out to run I was excited at the anticipation of rain and cooler temperatures. As time passed I came to the conclusion that Mother Nature was nothing but a big tease as the storm cell broke up and produced nothing in East Atlanta.

Have I mentioned that I’ve yet to get my air conditioning fixed? (note to self: start that process today)

One Hard Ticket To Buy
The Hold Steady is playing the 40 Watt Club in Athens on August 9th. Seeing how my friend Mike and I have seen them the last three times they’ve rolled through Atlanta we have decided to go four-for-four by attending the show in Athens.

Buying a ticket to this show has been somewhat of a problematic experience for me. It seems that the 40 Watt Club uses some online ticket processor called “PitchATent” whose website lacks a proper security certificate. Each time I try to buy a ticket I am warned that the site to which I try to connect may actually be a site masquerading as “PitchATent” and my confidential information could be compromised. As you would expect, this concerns me greatly and I cancel the purchase.

Questions: Are there any places in Atlanta that sell tickets for the 40 Watt Club? If not, are there any record stores in Athens who sell tickets for the 40 Watt Club?

Tonight We Finally Crown A Winner
Tonight is the final finale for this season’s Hell’s Kitchen! Who will win it all (and become Gordon Ramsay’s next lackey)? My guess is that it will be Petrozza.

Digital Download Of The Week
I am starting to debate the worth of this section. Increasingly I have neither heard the releases, nor have even heard of the bands releasing them. Further, I am really starting to boycott the purchase of music due to increase costs. I still refuse to buy new, environmentally wasteful CDs, and the rising costs of digital downloads is souring me from those as well.

If I could get advanced copies of the releases so that I could at least have some idea of what to recommend then I’d have no problem continuing this. However, I feel that my lack of knowledge on the releases has increased to the point to where I might as well throw darts at a dartboard to choose.

Should it stay or should it go?

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – frustrated by my technology
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Peter, Bjorn, And John — “Amsterdam”
Website Of The Day – I am a sucker for “tip” blogs. It’s no surprise then that TipNut pleases me.
Exercise (b)Log – running/walking 6 miles
Monthly Foot Mileage – 6 miles
Monthly Wheel Mileage – 0 miles
Mode Of Transportation To Work – My car
Monthly Marta Rides – 0
Consecutive Days Of Bed-Making (Longest Streak) – 97 (97)
Books To Read To Earn Kindle – 4

July Goals
1) Run/Walk no fewer than 75 miles
2) Ride no fewer than 150 road miles
3) Ride Marta no fewer than twenty times (ten round-trips)
4) Read at least two books
5) Make my bed every day
6) Relaunch www.JalapenoBeach.com
7) Keep track of how many days I use stairs over elevators

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

And once again, it looks like Woodstock stole all your moisture, ITP. Rex and I decided to sit in the garage and watch the storm until – kid you not – the *HAIL* got so big it started bouncing off his truck, aiming right for us. We only got hit with the flying ice a few times before we realized: yeah, lets go INSIDE and watch from the window instead (yup, it actually took a few ice balls to the noggin before that decision was made; we weren’t that bright last night)

Love the wheelchair photos, Paulie. This one and the others on your site — great facial expressions, too. You weren’t kidding about the spot you must have had!

  2. I don’t doubt that you saw hail because I saw black on the radar up that way.

I have about three more shots of this guy. I plan to put together a small series based on his facial expressions alone.

Most backup programs seem to suck… I’ve tried various with limited success. You’ve def. got a point about the error log, cryptic doesn’t begin to describe things!

Why petrozza? every time I’ve watched he’s always had a new one ripped for him and the other woman is the “golden girl” or so it had seemed…..

FYI, we are NOT going to get a Hash shit….. we may get snared 1000 times, but I’m not worried about the trail! 😉 …………………….yet!

  4. Martha says:

Ugh, I didn’t run either last night and I skipped bootcamp…I did some weights at home but it just wasn’t the same. I’d love to get out for a long bike ride before I leave next week. I’m not sure if or when I could fit that in…

Speaking of next week, any chance you are taking Marta to work on Monday?

Any way the house will be empty, Toby is going to stay with his girl friend Nutmeg (Don’t tell Reece) … enjoy the AC anytime you need a break.

  5. Barb says:

Martha – when are you leaving? Allan & I plan to ride a decent distance on Saturday. Might try to do the whole 40 in Roswell that we didn’t do on the Mayor’s ride. This week has gotten too busy to fit in a ride.

Everyone get jealous, Steve (aka FP) is in training/meetings/something at the Galleria all week, so we are going to Tasty China tonight. Allan may even leave Cycleworks early & join us. Any other readers in the neighborhood or not in the neighborhood want to brave traffic? 6PM is the meeting time.

  6. Martha says:

I’m leaving Monday morning…right now I’m just to stressed/freaked out trying to get ready to make any plans for the weekend.

  7. @Martha: Don’t know my Monday commute plans yet.

@Barb: If not for the Hell’s Kitchen finale I’d join you. (Can’t dvr it because my system is a bit FUBAR at the moment).

@Gentri: We should get out sometime in the near future to reccy the trail. I’ve got some good ideas, but we all know how inaccurate Google Maps can be.

  8. Stacy says:

@Barb – poo! Had it been yesterday, I would have. Going to be back in the country tonight again though. We might have to go again at lunch sometime….what do you think?

  9. Barb says:

the guy that works for dish network has a DVR doesn’t work right – something wrong with that picture…..

Stacy – as I always say, I eat everyday, just say when. I could even save gas & walk over there from my office.

  10. You know what they say, the cobbler’s children always have the worst shoes. 🙂

Besides, I am also a tree lover so I’ve yet to determine if trimming branches will be sufficient or I need to move the dish to get around the trees.

  11. Andrew says:

I would suggest using rsync to backup your hard disk. If it’s a one time copy, then maybe rsync is overkill, but if you’ll be backing up in the future it’s worth the trouble.

  12. I am using a program called ChronoSync for nightly backups. I believe that ChronoSync may use rsync under its hood. However for last night I just wanted to do one copy for my own peace of mind so I didn’t want to set up ChronoSync.

Don’t think you can buy tickets here in Atlanta, though. Boo.

  14. Barb says:

That newerish hasher Chumrag is working in Athens this summer, maybe you could get her to buy your tickets. She hangs with DooDoo, I’m sure he or MC has her contact info.

  15. Martha says:

    >She hangs with DooDoo

that’s a nice way to put it

  16. Barb says:

Isn’t this a family forum? Plus – I have no actual knowledge of what she does with Doo Doo. Nor do I really want to know.

  17. Hehe…

I might use this opportunity to make my own day-trip to Athens this weekend.
