Getting My C Legs Back

Slowly but surely I returning my first “business” love back into my life. That’s a good thing. If I can continue this trend you will see a marked improvement in my attitude.

Read Along With Me
Today’s passage from Notes To Myself.

I walk down the street and the guy waiting for the bus — who has been waiting there for God knows how long — suddenly find something more interesting to look at than a live human being. I do the same.

Do I avoid looking a stranger in the eyes because I don’t want to make him uncomfortable, or do I turn my eyes so he can’t look into me?

What is there in me that I don’t want him to see?

To all who have helped me — Thanks.

Why Am I So Frustratd By Flickr?
Yesterday I posted four shots of a really cute girl on Flickr. While it’s my opinion of my work, I think that these were four really good portraits as well. Yet not a single comment has been posted to them on Flickr.

While I just re-upped my Flickr account for another year back in July, I am seriously considering shutting my photos off from the public and only linking to those I want ITP readers to see (of course I’ll continue posting shots on Jalapeรƒยฑo Beach). It’s not like anyone is going to miss them since they don’t get many views anyway…. Don’t mind me, I am just being outwardly jealous of those who receive unconditional Flickr-Love even if their shots aren’t outstanding.

Little Willy, Little Willy, Where For Art Thou Little Willy?
Over a month ago you purchased a DSLR and yet you’ve yet to show us a single shot. I know you have much talent, I want to be inspired by your shots.

Why do I love photography?
No Entry
For all my life I’ve been “different” and have seen things differently from others. Photography provides me the ability to show others how I see the world.

It Might Be Time To Change My Password Management
I (apparently) have an account with a music marketing company who sends out email each week. I really want to get onto their website and listen to some of the music they are pimping but cannot remember my password for the life of me.

All attempts at cataloging and providing easy retrieval of my passwords has failed. I need a password management system that is safe, portable, and doesn’t require software installation on a specific computer.

Anyone have a solution? Anyone?

Wait, That’s Not Supposed To Happen!
For an upcoming excursion I decided to purchase another 4GB Compact Flash card for my camera. I’ve had good luck using SanDisk Compact Flash cards so I wanted to buy another one to match the one I own. Because href=”http://www.amazon.com” target=”_blank”>Amazon is so awesome I was able to find the receipt for my previous SanDisk Compact Flash card purchase. Much to my surprise, the price of the SanDisk Compact Flash card has gone up by about $10! WTF?! The price of technology is supposed to drop over time, not increase.

Now I have to decide whether I want wait for the price to drop, or just bite the bullet and buy it at the higher price.

George’s Tonight? Why Not?
I need a kick-start for my running routine. Last night it didn’t happen because I was too hungry by the time I left the office and I was easily swayed by the presence of rain (not that I wasn’t going to sweat so much that it looked like I’d been through a rain storm anyway. Expect me at George’s. Don’t expect me by 6pm. Expect me to be a short-timer as I have plenty of things which need to be done tonight.

In other news I need alter my eating schedule. Eating early breakfasts, lunches, and dinners wreaks havoc on any attempts at running. I may have to switch to that popular method of eating five-to-six small meals during the day rather than three normal-sized meals.

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – fair
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Guided By Voices — “My Valuable Hunting Knife”
Website Of The Day – Soon I’ll be so smart that I’ll be hitting MIT’s OpenCourseWare for information, although for now I’ll relearn my trade using C Programming.
Exercise (b)Log – nothing
Monthly Foot Mileage – 0 miles
Monthly Wheel Mileage – 50 miles
Mode Of Transportation To Work – My car
Monthly Marta Rides – 0
Consecutive Days Of Bed-Making (Longest Streak) – 21 (110)
Books To Read To Earn Kindle – 4

August Goals
1) Run/Walk no fewer than 75 miles
2) Ride no fewer than 150 road miles
3) Ride Marta no fewer than ten times (five round-trips)
4) Read at least two books
5) Make my bed every day

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

Are you ready for Colorado? Allan just got the okay for the vacation days finally (gotta love the City of Altanta……. okay, not really). So we will now be staying the week after the Invihash & going biking with Big Gulp & some other Dallas folks. We are going back to Monarch & Salida for at least 1 day of biking, and I will finally get to Durango.
So, we won’t be getting into Walsenburg until Friday sometime.
We are driving – how crazy is that, and now I need to find something interesting to stop & see on that long drive out there. If you ask real nice, we might be able to bring back some beer if you find something you like & want to bring back to Atlanta.

The MIT site may come in handy. I browsed it and found several stat classes… something to keep me warm on the lonely, winter nights that are just around the corner. Now I just need to shell out $70 for the text book, man I was hoping I was done with that stuff.

I would highly recommend switching to the 5-6 meals a day. It really works for me and once you get started it isn’t difficult to maintain. It will bump your metabolism a bit, you’ll probably end up eating less and I’m rarely ‘hungry’.

One of the keys, is to make sure you get protein with each meal. If your interested I have a ton of stuff on this, including meal ideas and lists of lean proteins…

I will admitt is it a lot tougher to do while traveling, I’ve noticed a difference this past month. I’ll be very happy when I get back on track.

  3. Not ready for Colorado just yet. I will be by this weekend however.

I suppose that I’ll be getting into Walensburg Thursday or Friday, depending on how the wind blows me.

What Atlantans will be there? So far I know of me, you, Allan, Neil & Sue (Ooops & Deposit Slit), Doo Doo, and Enema. I spoke with BWanA the other night and he said that he wasn’t going (which surprised me since I’ve long been under the impression that he was), and I know that Sal & Marty are skipping this one (boo! hiss! — who’s going to share the pig growler with me?)

  4. @Martha: Will chat about the meal planning with you…

@Barb: You bring any beer back that I can’t buy locally and I will be greatly indebted. Of course I’ll pay you for it all, plus a bonus lunch or two for your efforts. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Barb says:

I think you’ve got the list – you could add Shappens if you want, be besides that, I don’t know anyone else. Does Dick the Boy Wonder count? He is traveling with DooDoo.
Sal told me that Can’t Say No told them they could skip this one…. so we get to blame her.

  6. I guess we could lump Dick the Boy Wonder and Shappens into the “Atlantans” as they travel through here as much as anyone.

Sal told me that too. And the funny thing is that I think the Fort Collins hash is the host/sponsor for this year’s nonsense, is it not?

I’ll be skipping Colorado next year. Big plans will be brewing toward 2008’s end — thinking “outside this continent.”

flickr is fun to share stuff with folks overseas and on the coasts, if you have your own website, I would use it instead, but flikr makes is easy. I get very few comments, but then I post way too many pictures at once.

    6 meals a day seems like a pain… I have issues getting to 3 as it is…

I use a few different passwords, but in a nut shell, unless it deals with money or work, it is the same numeric/alphabetic password for everything. Yes, they could screw up my hash, or flickr, or download or dell etc account if they ever got a hold of it, but really, what would it matter??? and they still have to guess what the user name would be………….

  8. I like Flickr I just get frustrated at the lack of commenting. I only post four or five shots at a time as to not overwhelm those that might like to look at what’s new. I guess that Flickr is no different than anything else — it’s all a popularity contest.

I wouldn’t think of six meals a day if my hunger didn’t influence my exercise. I don’t want to start running/riding hungry, and it’s usually too late after I am done and showered to eat then. At least with riding I can bring along some snacks and eat along the way. I think if I tried that running I’d hurl.

  9. Chris says:

for passwords, I find Passpack to be great!

    http://www.passpack.com/

  10. Barb says:

oh yeah – we will have the big gas guzzling truck, so I’m sure we can fit a case or so of beer in the back no problem. Just buy whatever you see that you think is interesting. Since you will be in Fort Collins, if you get to New Belgium, pick up a bottle or two or three of La Folie for us, I will pay you back.

  11. I’ll check that out Chris. Thanks!

Barb, I will certainly get you some La Folie. Since I’ll have a rental I’ll be picking up some beer in Ft Collins and where ever else my travels take me prior to my arrival in Walsenburg.

  12. Martha says:

six ‘meals’ a day really isn’t tough, just takes a little planning.

    Typical day:

7 am: Cereal & soy sausage
10 am: fat free yogurt & fruit
12:30 pm: turkey, melba toast, carrots
    3 pm: low fat cheese
6-7 pm: black bean burger, veggies & carb
before bed: edemame/sugar free popcicle/cereal/cottage cheese (always have trouble getting this one in)

I love buying the bags of frozen edemame, I toss then in some tupperware with sea salt and by snack time they are thawed but still really cold. YUM.

I always do bootcamp on an empty stomach and the 3 pm snack is enough to hold me through an evening work out, if it is going to be a long one, I’ll adjust and eat a little more.

  13. Martha says:

Barb and Paulie, when you guys get back we must have a party to share all the ‘souvieners’ from our travels. I’ll bring the Indiana beer and Puerto Rican Rum….

  14. Littlewilly says:

Paulie ..Thanks for the kick in the *ss…I have yet to download the Nikon software onto my computer, but I have taken 6 photos. One at work and 5 of the cats…..cooler weather will get me out and shooting soon. Willy…….

  15. Barb says:

It is looking like we probably won’t be back in time for the Wilson weekend at Fag Pipes, we may be still driving back, but you just never know. The next weekend is Lake Hartwell (I guess we ought to get signed up & paid), and then the next weekend after that is the 2 Day Walk. Maybe we should have a hotel room party that weekend – it is ITP & all.

  16. Oh yeah, I need to register and pay for Lake Hartwell…. So many activities, so few weekends.

  17. Sal says:

ahhh…..the pig growler….brings back fond memories of Paulie giving the Jew Boy a hard time!!!

  18. Let it be known that I despite my Germanic background I like Jewish people…. I was considerably drunk that night and for some reason poking fun at Marty seemed like a really good idea.

  19. Stacy says:

I just re-upped my Flickr today too!

I have some thoughts about what you’re saying in regards to that. Of course, these are just my opinions, and are surely full of shit. That being said…

You, like some others I know (A-hem, Kalabron!) have a problem with using your Flickr account for your audience and not for yourself. You post 4 or 5 photos, but they’re typically only ones that you like best or are proud of or want to get response on. You’re not posting for friends or family or for rememberence sake, but for reaction from others. So when you don’t get the reaction then, of course it’s going to be disappointing.

But then think of the random ones you HAVE posted that people DO comment on: a camera phone shot of your feet up on a table… a snap of a last-minute dinner whipped up that you didn’t even “plan” to photograph. And just how amazed and pleased you are that people are thinking and talking about those? Sure, it’s not the ones you considered your “best” but they’re the ones that truly motivated others to respond.

Stop judging your own pictures so much and throw many, many more up there for us to see! The ones YOU feel are best may not catch someone else’s eye: the frame that’s two ahead or four back of the same subject might just be the one that prompts the conversation you’re missing. In fact, I’d suggest purposely picking ones that don’t appeal to you as much. Besides, if YOU already like the photo, are you really looking for people’s comments and feedback or just verification that it’s as good as you think it is?

I’ve also told Kalabron (:waves to Kalabron) that as more “professional” photographers, I can understand not wanting to put what you don’t think is your best up there. You only want to showcase your favorites; I understand that. But then I’d also suggest another account…one for the really great ones you really like and one for the fluff/extras/etc. I mention above. Best of both worlds and probably double the comments.

    Love ya! ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Andrew says:

Supergenpass. It’s a bookmarklet, it’s free, it works off of a single password and uses it to generate passwords for individual sites. It always generates the same password for a specific site, so all you need to remember is your master password.

    http://supergenpass.com/

I use 1Password but it’s mac software and needs to be installed on each machine. Which won’t work for you.

  21. @Stacy: Point taken. Don’t know how many I’ll wind up posting, but I understand what you are saying. ๐Ÿ™‚

@Andrew: Oooh, I’ve heard of SuperGenPass before but had forgotten about it.

  22. Steve says:

Barb, we’ll miss you at the Wilson, but you can still have floor space if you need it.

And it seems I recall that the Sal/Marty/CSN/HeadEunuch are running rim to rim to rim. Not the way I EVER want to see the Grand Canyon.

Hey hey HAY! I commented before I read. ๐Ÿ™‚ I love your pics, maybe others do too and assume it goes without saying?

  24. Smoove D says:

I usually put my best stuff on my photoblog and dump the outtakes on Flickr. I would agree that Flickr is a popularity contest – the photoblogging community seems to be more artistically inclined. I don’t get much comment love on either, so I have no advice for you there.
