And For Some Reason It Feels Like Florida Outside

My Chumby had some issues this morning (not) playing music back via the Pandora app. Perhaps it’s just as confused as I am these days. When I looked at the calendar it said “December” and when I last checked I was still inside the perimeter. Why then is it warm and muggy outside as if I was living in Florida again?

Beer, Beer, Beer I’m Gonna Have Some Beer
Last night I met up with a handful of Flickrites at Little Five Points newest drinking hole, The Porter. For old-time Atlantans, The Porter is located where Bridgetown Grille used to be. The Porter is a cool drinking hole with a wide selection of beer and half-decent food, think “Brick Store Jr.”

The Porter is another one of those Atlanta bars that has its own interpretation of the city’s smoking laws. According to The Porter’s website they are a non-smoking environment until 10pm and then after that no one under eighteen years of age is allowed in the building as smoking is then allowed. According to my interpretation of the city’s law you either choose to allow smoking, or you choose to allow children, and there is not provision for a time cutoff.

Regardless, I can see myself returning to The Porter, although it will have stiff competition from my other L5P favorites, The Yacht Club, The Vortex, Brewhouse, and The Corner Tavern.

The Xbox360 Conundrum
The other night I purchased a new shelf for my entertainment system. The extra shelf allows me to sandwich the Xbox360 into the system making it extremely difficult to remove from the rack. The entertainment system is a metal bread rack, so I’m not concerned about my components overheating.

After getting the rack put back together I turned on the Xbox360 so that it could take a software download. To my dismay the box booted and then, after a few seconds of inactivity, displayed a red light on the front panel. At first I feared that this was the dreaded Red Ring of Death which means that the box is dead. After some investigation on the internet I found that the red light that I am witnessing means that the hard drive may be corrupted and tonight I will attempt to correct this problem. I would have decided to add the Xbox360 to my growing list of Microsoft devices that I dream of ditching, if not for the fact that is and will always be, my only HD-DVD player on which I can watch my Planet Earth HD-DVDs.

As of today I have no desire to own a Blu-Ray player.

Oh wait, this is somewhat accurate because He is not supposed to arrive until Christmas Day.

Holy Shit, Christmas Is Next Week!
I’ve so much to do in order to prepare for Christmas. And before I know it Christmas will be gone again for another year.

Tonight I must prepare and mail Christmas cards. This weekend, in addition to the two hashes I plan to run, I want to watch many of the Christmas shows I own on DVD. I’ve already watched “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” I still have “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” “A Year Without A Santa Claus,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and “A Christmas Story” to watch before next Tuesday. Who needs a DVR? And if possible I’d like to make it to the Horizon Theatre to see “The Santaland Diaries.”

I’ve come to the conclusion that there will be no Christmas tree in the house again as I braved Lenox Mall last night and came up empty on the pathetic Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Oh well, it’s not like there would have been presents under the tree anyway; I see no point wrapping gifts to myself.

Beer, Beer, Beer I’m Gonna Have Some Beer
Tonight is the monthly Atlanta TweetUp and I will be in attendance. This month we’ll be convening at Thinking Man Tavern in Decatur(ish). I plan to make this an early evening consisting of food and a beer or two. It should be a fun time.

note to self: Be home in time to watch Top Chef.

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…

Mode Of Transportation To Work – my car
Exercise (b)Log – nothing

Monthly
Foot Mileage – 8 miles
Wheel Mileage – 0 miles
Consecutive Days Of Bed-Making (Longest Streak) – 17 (17)

December Goals
1) Lose no fewer than two pounds
2) Drink no soda
3) Run no fewer than 50 miles
4) Completely read no fewer than one book
5) Write at least one program using Ruby on Rails

Let’s do a petition to move Christmas back a week or so. I’m not ready… or in the mood for it. ๐Ÿ™

Hey, I’ve met the Kindle book reading quota several times over in the last few months. We can trade – kinda like carbon credits – and you could buy the Kindle and let me borrow it. I wouldn’t know what one was if it weren’t for you and now I covet one.

  2. Hahaha, that’s a great idea about the Kindle. Obviously sine my count has held steady at four since July or so I don’t warrant a purchase of one. You will have to wait to buy one thanks to Oprah. Since she talked about it on her show Amazon has sold out. This may not be a bad thing however since rumors are abound that a new version is in the making.

  3. Gentri says:

The joy of the Xbox… so do you have mad Gears of War skillz now or what?

You hitting the ATL Xmas party Sat nite?

  4. I have no xbox skills. I had the xbox “in storage” for the past five months or so. I finally brought it out again this week since I could install the new shelf.

I doubt that I’ll be at the ATL Xmas party. I have a ticket to see Dead Confederate and Manchester Orchestra at Variety Playhouse that night.

  5. Barb says:

ATL hash Christmas party? It is Friday 12/19 unless something has changed………

Allan’s dad got a Kindle – of course he bought it himself not that much before christmas. He is impossible to shop for because of things like this.

  6. Primer, err Barb, is right.

    Atlanta Hash XMas Party

Upstairs of Danneman’s Coffee (hashers use the back stairs)
466 Edgewood Av, Atlanta, GA, 30312

    Party is Friday, 12/19 from 7:30pm – 11:30pm
    $10 to enter

No guarantee that you will have your dignity come night’s end.

  7. Gentri says:

Sorry, Friday it is… flashed back to Sat. being the official hash day I think… Friday happy hour/Atlanta Xmas party throwing me off somehow…

Well that certainly explains why no “Paulie’s Gears of War basement playoff” party never happened….

It’s the dignity and a few other things that put me off… may go anyway… def. hitting BSH on Sunday however….

Barb, I have to stop myself from buying shit for a few months too… being a non-consumer is hard! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Martha says:

We are not moving christmas…I think I have a bump where I hit my head on the table last night when Tom (mistakenly) said christmas was two weeks away. I’m so ready for Christmas Day and then for the whole thing to be forgotten for another year.

At least I finally have most of the christmas cookies out of the house.

Scott and I saw Santaland Diaries last year, that is my kind of christmas special.

So I guess since the party is at Kate’s place that means that PWD didn’t close on the house? I guess there is still a chance for my neighborhood ๐Ÿ˜‰ I doubt I’ll make it, we are doing a Pub Crawl for Two Saturday, I’m sure I will need to rest up for that.

  9. I might make it to the hash party now that I know it’s Friday. Black Sheep on Sunday is a definite, and AH4/PL on Saturday is a most likely.

My house in general is what has stopped me from all of the gatherings I used to have. As of now the only time I can remember having people over this year was for the Super Bowl party. I must have hosted a Sunday run, but I can’t remember that far back.

I thrust all cookies, except for the rum balls, onto my coworkers. They were all fantastic but the last thing that I need to do is scarf down desserts.

I saw “Santaland Diaries” years ago (know as the “dating years”) and would like to see it again. It’s one of things I should plan in advance and always forget to do.

Martha, it does sound like the area is still “PWD Free” ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. Martha says:

I think I’m going to miss AH4/PL3…hitting every bar in EAV will be enough for one day. Forgot about BS3…that is currently a maybe.

I don’t think you hosted this year…but we missed a lot of days. So anyone up for the 28th??

  11. Gentri says:

PWD free, but not for long… looks like you’ll have to upgrade to the “Beer-muda polygon or trapezoid” soon enough!

Santaland Diaries sounds interesting. The only Christmas thing I have done was I managed to catch the ASO Xmas concert last week… I can officially say it rocked HARD! Morehouse Men’s Choir stole the show…

  12. Martha says:

Paulie, just checked, SD runs until Jan 4th…so there should be plenty of time if you’d like to get a group together…I’d go again.

Until a house holds a Sunday Run that last well into the evening they can not offically be part of the ‘triangle’.

Well you know me and the holidays…this year I’ve made Scrooginess an offical word.

  13. Every bar in EAV? Yikes wasn’t last week enough? ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ll believe P-Diddy’s close on the house when I see it happen. Last I heard it was pushed back until a structural engineer could inspect the house.

I generally shut down all Christmas activities once Christmas has occurred, but I could possibly put that notion being me for Santaland Diaries.

  14. Barb says:

Allan is not working all weekend, maybe we will go to a hash or possibly 2. We have a party to go to way the hell up in Cumming on Saturday night, so it will all depend on how late we stay out, if we choose to spend the night up there, if we make it to Black Sheep.
And, we have to figure out some sort of Christmas gift for the in-laws, since they are in town, I can’t blow it off. I sent my parents a gift card last week, and got yelled at for sending them anything. I’ve also decided to not send my nieces & nephews anything this year, since their parents (my siblings) can’t seem to get them to call or send a thank you……… I’ll see if it even gets noticed. I guess I’m sort of in the Scrooginess mood too.

  15. Since I am the only one for whom I buy Christmas gifts (all year ’round) if I am Scroogy I am only Scrooging myself…

  16. Martha says:

Well, no it wasn’t since I didn’t get to Mary’s ๐Ÿ˜‰ He wants to check out all the new places and visit the old ones…we will see how far we get.

Yeah, I think I may have found my match in this one…heck our bar tab was $80 for a Tuesday night… that made for a fun run at 5:45 this morning.

Maybe we can plan an outing to the Horizon between xmas and new year…

“I am only Scrooging myselfรขโ‚ฌยฆ” – must not say anything…too easy… but yeah, I’ve been bad to myself … other than my new roommate, Roomba (BTW Great Roommate), I haven’t bought myself anything fun since my birthday. Any suggestions??

  17. Debbie says:

Martha, are you lovin’ the Roomba? Ours had a little technical difficulty with a string, but once we got her untangled she was back in action. Love her.

You could always get yourself a Kindle that I could borrow! ๐Ÿ™‚ lol I really wonder if I’ll like it since I’m such a book person and an electronic version seems cold. Barb, does TJ like his?

  18. Martha says:

I LOVE my Roomba (mine is a he though)…He works for me twice a day and is always full…kind of gross when I think I was lucky to sweep every 4 or 5 days…plus my house is small enough he can do the whole place on one charge.

Bonus points for when he runs into Toby…and Toby won’t move. Roomba even got stuck under Toby one day. Nibbles does everything in her power to avoid Roomba, I think she afraid it will sweep her up also.

  19. debbie says:

LOL! Cassius ignores Judy (our Roomba) and won’t move if she bounces off of him. Zoe is sure Judy is dangerous and Satchmo refuses to acknowledge Judy in any way. (Funny since he is the reason for Judy.)

Steve was concerned that they would eat it, but that would require too much effort.

I can’t believe how much better our floors look!

  20. Barb says:

Debbie – TJ likes the Kindle, he says it is really easy to use. He hasn’t been reading as much, now that he is retired and Allan’s mom makes him do house chores. You can ask him if you can borrow it, I think they will come with us to the birthday party.

  21. Martha says:

Unless that thing climbs a ladder and cleans up its mess, i’ll stick with the gutter guys.

  22. Gentri says:

    Probably a wise choice Martha!
