New Day Rising

Anyone catch this morning’s sunrise? Spectacular.

Oh Trivia, You Can Be So Frustrating
Last night I met up with some friends at Matador Cantina for a night of Mexican food and Team Trivia. I started the night off strong by answering the first question:

Q: Which movie had the following actresses performing in it — Reese Witherspoon, Rachel Welch, Selma Blair.

Friends who know me well understand my infatuation with Selma Blair, and to a lesser extent Reese Witherspoon so I quickly had the answer.

Later in the game I answer the the question:

Q: Which current AFC team started out as the Dallas Texans.

and then finally I helped convince the rest of the team that it was Lehman Brothers who filed for bankruptcy in September 2008.

My only real misstep that I made during the night was not going with my gut feeling that it was Tim McCarver who released an album of Jazz standards last year. Instead I went with Joe Buck.

Our team later went on to supposedly incorrectly answer the final question so we wound up winning no money.

The Jackmobile Is Going To See A New Doctor Today
This morning I’ll be taking the Jackmobile into Peach Auto Service (as recommended by ITP-Readers Barb and Martha) for a brake checkup, oil change, and investigation into the SRS light. Not knowing how long this is going to take I’ve schedule the appointment near lunch so that I can either walk to get something to eat, walk to a Marta station, or get one of my work buddies to come down to Buford Hwy for lunch — something that is hard to accomplish as asking a hasher if he/she wants a beer.

Let’s hope that 2010 is a much kinder year than 2009 and that the SRS like is not going to cost me much money to rectify. Paulie’s got a house to fix…

Speaking Of A House To Fix
Good grief…. Could my house be any more problematic?

Yesterday(?) I whined about not talking to the attractive young woman in Lowe’s. Yesterday I visited Home Depot seeing if I could find a replacement faucet for my bathroom sink. Did you know that the two standard spreads for sink faucets are 4″ and 8″? Did you know that the spread for my bathroom sink is 6″? Further my sink’s design is not standard, thus fitting a new faucet even harder.

So now I’m back to the idea of trying to take the faucet assembly apart and rebuild it so that it works flawlessly. This ought to be interesting…

Further complicating matters is that fact that the City of Atlanta installed new RF-readable water meters last year. When doing this they also had the brilliant idea to lock the water meter box, thus removing any chance for the homeowner to turn off the water at the street. DANGEN! Now I’ll have to see if I have a water main shutoff inside the house. If not, add the installation of one onto the list of things to have done by a professional plumber.

Gitting It On My “Kindle”
Yesterday I bought a Kindle version of Version Control with Git: Powerful Tools and Techniques for Collaborative Software Development to be read on my iPhone. So far, so good.

Along with my lack of reading I’ve decided to wait on a Kindle purchasing decision until Apple makes whatever announcement they have planned for January 27th.

Keeping Myself In Check
Last night I finally got around to launching back into “1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die.” Oddly, the first photo is present on page 12 and the index ends at page 973. How does that work? I guess that means they’ve put two or more photos on one page? How significant can a piece of artwork be if you can’t fill up an entire page with historical information about it?

    – “Legally Blonde”
    – Kansas City Chiefs
    – Lehman Brothers (other suggestions were Bear Sterns and AIG)

  2. Barb says:

The internets loving Paulie could maybe find a 6″spread that way?

Tell Lam Miss Barbara says hi. I was so happy that my check engine light went back off, damn gas gap not being tight enough.

I would have never gotten Kansas City Chiefs.

Thrashers vs. Sabres tonight – let us know if you are going to be there.
Big beers near Gorins between 6 & 7……..

  3. When I called Lam’s place I mentioned your name Barb and the guy on the phone knew you and your vehicle immediately.

My arrival at the game / pre-game will be dependent on what time I get my car back. I’ll let you know if I can’t make it to Gorin’s before the game.

  4. Barb says:

BTW – did I catch this morning’s sunrise…….. that funny!

  5. Martha says:

First thing you do tonight is find where that shut off valve is…you do not want to be searching for it in an emergency.

Have you checked with ACE for a new faucet, they seem to carry (or can get)stuff for these weird, old houses. Or tried on-line plumbing suppy, or special order from home depot/lowes? Or how about just get a new sink/vanity combo?

Have I mentioned that my office is right down the road from Lam’s.

  6. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

Finging if I have an internal shutoff valve is on the list. Since the house was built when you could shut it off at the street I may not have one.

Replacing the sink and vanity is not an option I’m considering due to the added cost.

I know your office is nearby but since today’s work is a great unknown I didn’t want to ask.

  7. Martha says:

Our houses were built about the same time and I have one in mine. It is located (in the crawl space) where the main water line enters the house. The guy that inspected my house showed me were it was at before I ever moved in.

I wont be making the hockey game tonight, it just isn’t as much fun when I’m not drinking (much).

  8. Okay, back at the office after dropping my car off with Lam. I called a favor in with a coworker whose family owns Hoa Bin grocery store a block away from Lam’s. Only time will tell how much I owe and whether or not I can make it to the hockey game tonight.

Martha, you can still drink you just have to let yourself do it. 😉 If I have an inside cutoff it’s located in the space above my drop ceiling in the basement. I just need to root around to find where the water main enters the house.

  9. Barb says:

I think I went to that Hoa Bin grocery once, do they sell live eels hanging somewhere in the store? (that scared me).

Allan might be able to help you with the faucet issue – talk to him about it tonight. A cheap new vanity, sinktop & faucet didn’t cost much at all when we bought one to sell the house in Roswell, and I think it was pretty damn easy to install, I don’t remember hearing Allan screaming obscenities at all.

Good idea on ACE HARDWARE, I love those stores, the guys there always know the answer I need.

Allan & Kevin are entertainment enough for me for hockey, but a big beer (or two) before the game & Allan will most likely have a flask if that convinces you to join us.

  10. Steve says:

Lowes and Home Depot only carry for houses built in the last 10 years or so, and that window is getting smaller. They don’t make much money selling replacement/repair parts but make it in selling complete replacements. Ace would have much more chance of having your faucet- standard 30 years ago.

Considering I had to cough up $75 to get un-booted last night, I’m in a pretty good mood.

  11. The “problem” with a new sink/vanity is that the bathroom is bright yellow. The tile is yellow. The toilet is yellow. The tub is yellow. Therefore if the sink is not yellow then it will look out of place. Further, the vanity is not just for the sink, but for the entire bathroom so it’ll have to ripped out and only Jeebus knows what new adventures that will initiate.

The EAV Ace is too small. When I first attempted this project nearly eleven years ago (not kidding) I wound up shopping at the Handy Ace or whatever the hell it’s called in Tucker.

Barb, I want to go to the game. The only thing that will stop me is a lack of transportation.

Steve, I read about your booting last night. Sorry to hear it. After receive a ticket at one of those “pay at the boxes” lots because I must have slipped my money into the wrong slot I’ve vowed to use pay lots as little as possible. If no “free” parking exists behind George’s I take it to the streets.

  12. Barb says:

if you went white – it would look okay (you may need a new toilet someday & I can guess you couldn’t find a yellow one again) – but yes, getting the right size/fit is another whole issue.

  13. wdpowers says:

Paulie, The water shut off inside the house will be located right where the main first enters the house. Usually this is a straight line from where the meter is located. You could always cut the lock ..I have bolt cutters. Handy Hardware in Tucker will likely have what you need to rebuild the guts of your faucet.

  14. Back from picking up my car. So far, nothing but praise.

The oil change and plugging a tire that had a nail was $34. They checked the brakes, checked but found nothing wrong illuminating the SRS light, checked the brakes and tires and gave told me that neither needed replacement today.

  15. Barb says:

So, they just shut that light back off? Cool. Glad all went well & the Jackmobile is okay. Where did you eat?

  16. The light is off and I have a contact at Gwinnett Honda if it comes back on.

We ate at Dai Lao on Buford, which was convenient since I got the call that my car was done while eating.
