There have been mornings over the past few years on which I wondered how I managed to unlock my car doors, certain that I had locked them the previous night.
This morning I was perturbed at myself for seemingly accidentally pressing the trunk release, that was until I saw that the driver’s door wasn’t completely closed, and that someone had obviously rifled through the center console and glove compartment overnight. They had also opened the trunk, and looked for goodies in it as well. How they got in, given that the M6 has a “security†system, is baffling to me, though I imagine that the black market has all sorts of devices which can unlock modern car doors.
Upon quick inspection the biggest physical losses were the portable solar panel that I kept in the pocket behind the passenger seat, and the $1 bill that Bonnie had given me on Monday night. Fortunately the thief didn’t take my work ID, nor did he find the half-filled wallet that I absentmindedly left tucked into a compartment in the trunk. I am hoping that I don’t realize that anything else is missing.
Once again I feel violated, and a new “To Do†— Marie Kondo the fuck out of the car leaving only items which I won’t mind have being stolen from me — is on today’s agenda.

And here I thought today’s post was going to be about how frustrated I was at Kroger yesterday for having no gas as I pulled in with a critically-low amount of gas in the M6. Ah, simpler times…

I hate it that your car was broken into. It sounds like they were “considerate†enough to not damage your car. It really pours salt in the wound when you not only get robbed but have to get your car repaired to boot.
And that Kroger gas station is a clusterfuck. As is the store. The Publix on Memorial opens June 26. I’ve been waiting 15 years for easier access to Publix.
I really should investigate the door to ensure that no damage was done. I think the shock and my mindset to get to work blocked the common sense of doing this. At least they didn’t shatter the window…
True, there’s definitely that. I’ve had my window broken a couple of times, and once they dug the window frame open. Once my catalytic converter was cut off of my vehicle because apparently there’s platinum in them thar hills… But yes, slip up and leave a car unlocked in Grant Park and it’ll get rifled for sure.

I also worried that they stole to CC, but then the car started an ran, so I am guessing they were no that interested in engine parts? 🤷ðŸ»â€â™‚ï¸
Starting your car without a catalytic converter will wake the dead, so you’d know unequivocally. Engine part thieves tend to target vehicles that have ground clearance, in my case it was a Toyota pick-up. I think your M6 is too low to the ground to make it easy enough for them.

I was also concerned the battery would be dead, but the their turned off the dome light in the car, perhaps accidentally while looking in the sunglasses compartment.
That wasn’t accidental, they do that on purpose to avoid drawing attention to themselves. “Who’s that dude rooting around Paulie’s car?” But yes, another silver lining. I know way too much about car break-ins.
Everything mechanical I’ve learned has been hard-fought knowledge, so I’m with you there.

I’m annoyed because I filled it up with gas yesterday, and they gave it to me with 3/4 tank. I’m giving them free gas!!!

A simple idea might be some motion sensitive lights in the carport. We have one right in front of our carport and it’s rare you can get past it and not set it off. I also have some fake security cameras, complete with flashing red light! (9V battery).
A bit of a run last night before monsoon season starts later today. I love the fact that a weekend I have 2 outdoor things to do the forecast is for 4″ of rain. If it’s no worse than this mornings moisture, I’d ride in this.

Went out to the M6 at lunch. Very minor damage done on the door. Still not too sure how the thief got in. Oh well, still feeling a bit mad, scared, and anxious, but this too shall pass.
