Well, I think that my roof repairs are done. I won’t really know until it rains again and I can get into the attic to check. What I do know is that people are shitheads. How do I know this? Because I found a bullet embedded in a shingle. Only shitheads would shoot bullets into the air.

I’m trying to avoid watching disaster porn, but I really want to know how western North Carolina is doing. One of the reasons I want to know is selfish as I am planning to revisit the area at the end of this month, assuming that the areas to which I intend to travel have returned to a normal life. From what I have seen, there is less than a 50/50 chance of this in a month’s time. We, the collective we, will be paying (financially) for the storm damage for a long time.

The cost of Disney+ (with Hulu and ESPN+) is going up again in two weeks, to $22/month. I am trying to figure out if I can justify the cost of dropping Disney, the one that I rarely watch, and keeping Hulu and ESPN+.

Today is a cleanup day, both inside and outside, and hopefully tonight I will make it to my last Tuesday night ride of the year.

A week from today, October 8, I will be departing on Mom’s Last Road Trip. The storms of last weekend have altered this plan, mainly the route that I will drive, since I would like to avoid areas which have been impacted.

That date may also mark the start of a new stage in my life, one which will impact this space greatly.

Wordle in 4 and screwed myself on a guess with a letter I already knew was in the wrong place.

There is NO chance Asheville will be ready for visitors by the end of the month. NONE. ZERO. Make other plans.

And evening of mowing with the little mower since the big mower is down for repairs. And while I ordered new blades, I passed on the bolt that holds the blade- $15 a piece!! I can find a bolt, thanks.

Second to last Games meeting tonight- we start receiving equipment next Thursday and Friday with major load out starting on the 12th. I’m ready to get started.

    • The AirBnB is refundable, so I will wait a few weeks to cancel.

It’s weird for me to think that just two weeks ago I was starting to look for property (out of interest) in western North Carolina.

Count Down to Shut Down: T – 7

are you really going to completely shut this thing down?

  3. Steve says:

    You’re WHAT?

Then how will we keep track of you? Celebrate your successes and commiserate on your failures? It gives you something to do most every day and being “retired” as you are, you probably need some routine.

I just went to Aldi – no 50% off deals 1st thing in the morning today – was trying to figure out what we are going to make as cooks at Eggtoberfest this weekend.
So, I went over to Sam’s – found some ok deals on hamburger meat – we are now making some sort of meatloaf. The FAQs say make enough for 400 samples – not sure we will make that much.
We have a group of 4 Eggs (8 cooks) – our friend Mike who recently died organized it – so we are all still going because he’d want us to.
I hate it isn’t at Stone Mtn anymore – its up in Gwinnett at Coolray Field.

  5. Back from a walk with Betsy. Should be cleaning up, but going to give my aching body a rest.

    This late report from KKGB-

So far! we have 3 trees that are leaning/uprooted but I don’t think those 3 are going to fall on the house, There are 2 I’m stil worried about.

our neighbor’s house is a total loss. The neighbor on the other side had their living room crushed by a tree but it’s fixable — they already pulled the tree off and tarped it.

so we really have gotten lucky so far!

You might be interested in this tidbit from my daily economic newsletter: “In the satellite TV equivalent of Godzilla and Kong teaming up against Skar King, DirecTV announced it’s buying longtime rival Dish for $1 in a deal that unites the two providers as they fight to maintain relevance in the age of streaming. The two companies have lost a combined 63% of their customers since 2016. The merger will make DirecTV the largest US TV distributor, with 18 million subscribers.”

I guess the Dish brand will be no more!

We’re still considering tossing Dish, even with our occasionally sketchy internet connectivity. I’ve been reading up on an antenna for our router that would improve the connection, but it requires getting into the works of the device- no soldering, but damn close. Might be more than I want to tackle.

    • Barb says:

that’s very interesting about DirecTV & Dish.
We still have AT&T UVerse & think about cancelling all the time – but I like my DVR (that I know how to work)

    • Yeah. Recall I worked for Dish for about twenty years. The format, satellite tv, is pretty much a dinosaur. At one point in time Dish bought DirecTV but the government regulatory agency squashed the deal. Currently merger is the only way either could survive.

      • Jenka says:

Yep, that’s why I posted the tidbit. The rest of the article said the previous deal was in 2002 and was denied on anti-trust regulations.
