Slow And Steady Doesn’t Win The Race

Published by Paulie [eatl/ga] on October 7, 2008 08:51 am under My Daily Life

There is deep meaning to today’s title, you’ll have to figure out the obscure meaning for I won’t tell. What is readily obvious that when running with people who are in better shape and workout zealots (I’m looking squarely at you Martha) then I shan’t “win” the race. The fact that I waddled around for my four-miles was good enough for me last night. Tonight I am giving my suspect knees a break and in addition am going to meet with friends for a meat dinner. That’s right by tomorrow I will have consumed my entire allotment of meat for the week.

Day Early And A Dollar Long?
Yesterday I went to a bank, two actually. These were real, brick and mortar buildings that I entered. How odd it was to see how friendly Wachovia employees can be whilst their company wobbles like my knees while running.

It looks like I jumped the gun however because in yesterday’s mail I received a check from Uncle Sam. See, I’m not complaining here because the check that I received was a reversal of the tax penalty levied on me a few months back.

What to do with this windfall? A new laptop (not enough money to do that)? A Wii (enough money, could this be foreshadowing???)? Camera gear (almost enough money, and a good guess)? Nope! Since this is money that I had “written off” my books I’m going to be a good son and send it to my mother because I think she can use it more than I could right now. No matter what I do with the money I’ll need a return trip to a bank in order to deposit the check.

For Someone Who Chooses To Eat Vegetarian I Surely Am Ill Prepared
Last night I hobbled home from the run with a hankering for food. Unfortunately a scan of my cupboard, refrigerator, and freezer revealed few vegetarian options. For the second time in days I wound up eating steamed white rice with a sauce to add flavor for dinner. At least it was filling, and somewhat delicious.

Somebody needs to find time to make it to a grocery store to buy the fixings necessary to support the lifestyle that he has chosen to follow.

Can You Find The Waterfall?
I call this “Waterfall In A Drought.”

Digital Download Of The Week
I was all excited because I thought that Atlanta’s Deerhunter was releasing new music today. Then I went back and noticed that it’s Deerhoof instead. Deerhunter’s music comes out in three weeks.

That band whose name has been banned from this blog (Margot And The Nuclear So & Sos) has a release today. However, I’m still steamed that the canceled two Atlanta concerts a few years ago and that I lost my ticket money for one of them.

This week appears like another Old Timers’ Day for music releases….

  • Sarah McLachlan
  • Oasis
  • The Pretenders
  • Police
  • Tesla

Yikes!

Has anyone heard the new Travis? Is it worth the download?

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – funky, like something out of my control is going down
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Kings Of Leon — “Fans”
Website Of The Day – Since I’ll be heading to the grocery store perhaps I’ll pick up the ingredients for one or more of the recipes from Potato Soup Recipe.
Exercise (b)Log – running, 4 miles
Monthly Foot Mileage – 25.5 miles
Monthly Wheel Mileage – 0 miles
Mode Of Transportation To Work – my car
Monthly Marta Rides – 0
Consecutive Days Of Bed-Making (Longest Streak) – 23 (110)
Books To Read To Earn Kindle – 4
Vegetarian Days – 4
Carnivore Days – 2

October Goals
1) Lose no fewer than three pounds
2) Drink nothing but water, coffee, beer, wine
3) Run no fewer than 75 miles
4) Bike no fewer than 125 miles

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

You need to get yourself to one of the saving graces for Atlanta…. YDFM and buy up a bunch of their “dried” goods… if you are going to be a veg-head this would be my one stop shopping place, which along with a slow cooker, should serve you well and conveniently! As an additional bonus the non-meat booze selection is pretty good… heh, I just re- found some Bacon Chocolate that LA gave me while digging through a kitchen box… I’ll keep it for the “meatless boy” for when you want the taste of meat, but none of it included! ;)

  2. Gentri on October 7th, 2008 @ 09:40

    Sorry, 5/7ths Veg-head, that is……….

  3. Paulie [eatl/ga] on October 7th, 2008 @ 09:57

I think I have to wait for my Birkenstocks to arrive before I’m allowed to shop at YDFM. Oh wait, never mind, that’s Sevenada. :)

I have all of the cooking equipment, but nothing but meat and meat-byproducts in storage.

  4. Martha on October 7th, 2008 @ 09:59

Zealot? Who? Little old me??? Naw…oh did I mention I’m hitting the SCT tonight after work on the bike.

It just dawned on me the other day, I’m not as much of a veg-head as I thought. Did you know turkey bacon is considered a meat?? I don’t think it should be. Well I’ve been better this week, I’ve been eating that leftover veggie casserole from Sunday. Like I said before between boyfriend break-up and doggie emergencies I think my goal of losing two pounds this month will be a piece of cake.

A trip to YDFM is definitely in order. Maybe Thursday, it really isn’t too far out of the way home from work.

  5. Paulie [eatl/ga] on October 7th, 2008 @ 10:07

See, I don’t even know what the SCT is, that proves you are a zealot.

Losing two pounds will be problematic if you are eating cake. Especially cake laced with delicious bacon….

On Thursday I’ll be using my noggin eating a free (veggie) burrito and drinking a beer while using the bar cash earned during previous Meet The Hashers wins.

In other news…. Sal (if you are reading this), I heard about your injury. So sorry to hear about this. I hope that you heal soon. Best wishes!

  6. Martha on October 7th, 2008 @ 10:11

Silver Comet Trail… The ladies are also giving me a hard time today.

Yeah Sal, +1 on getting well soon. What a drag.

Well, I wasn’t going to say anything until the end of the month but as of yesterday I have reach my goal. But I don’t have any cake to celebrate with though some how there is still bacon in the fridge.

  7. Paulie [eatl/ga] on October 7th, 2008 @ 10:14

Reaching your goal early is great…. but can you maintain it??? :P ZEALOT!!!!!

  8. Martha on October 7th, 2008 @ 11:08

We all knew bacon was some powerful stuff…

Bacon, not bomb, leads to evacuation of office

WEST CHESTER, Ohio — The office of an Ohio congressman who has fought against pork barrel spending was evacuated over a suspicious package that turned out to be full of bacon.

Staff members at the office of House Minority Leader John Boehner (BAY’-nur) became concerned Monday after finding an envelope leaking an oily substance. Police evacuated several buildings before determining the package postmarked from Georgia contained bacon.

A note was included with the bacon, but police didn’t commenting on its contents.

Boehner was not in the office.

A spokeswoman says it’s ironic someone would send Boehner bacon because he has spent his career fighting pork-barrel spending. He’s one of the few members of Congress who shuns earmarks, those home-district projects sought by lawmakers.

However, the Republican has drawn criticism for voting for a $700 billion financial bailout bill that critics say was loaded with pork.

  9. Sal on October 7th, 2008 @ 11:11

Yeah, I’m reading…….thanks for the well wishes.

I was told no running for 4 to 5 months! Don’t know how I am going to do that!

Y’all can stop all the talk about food! I quit eating!

  10. Paulie [eatl/ga] on October 7th, 2008 @ 11:18

Sal, you’ll be fine. If there’s one person who I know can rebound from injury it’s you.

And if there are two people, it’s you and Little Easy (who will most likely never get hurt).

And if there are three people…. :)

For those days when you think you need meat, but really just need something filling, you could try one of our staples: Chili cheese tater dogs.

Cook tater tots, veggie chili and veggie dogs as appropriate.

Start with a layer of (cooked) tater tots.
Apply a layer of vegetarian chili.
    Slice veggie dogs onto chili.
    Liberally sprinkle cheese on top.
    Bake until cheese melts.
    Enjoy.

Alternate directions: veggie dogs can be sliced and cooked in with the chili.

  12. Steve on October 7th, 2008 @ 15:05

Randy- that sounds good, but I think it could be even better… just add MEAT!!!

    ;-)

  13. Martha on October 7th, 2008 @ 15:15

I had a brief love affair with veggie corn dogs, better for you than a real corn dog…but then what isn’t??

I came to the cold, cruel realization that they weren’t good for my diet either…at least not everyday!!!

  14. Paulie [eatl/ga] on October 7th, 2008 @ 15:42

C’mon folks, let’s not berate the vegetarians (now that I am sort of one, anyway). :)

Thanks Randy, I will be trying that in the near future.

  15. Barb on October 7th, 2008 @ 16:33

WHAT? Corn dogs are bad for me? You just ruined my day……

  16. Paulie [eatl/ga] on October 7th, 2008 @ 16:35

No, no. Nobody said they were bad for *you* Barb, Martha merely said that they weren’t good for *her* diet (and I’ve heard that she’s become a workout zealot).

What I prescribe for you is to eat a corn dog smothered in Skyline chili.

  17. Barb on October 7th, 2008 @ 16:55

not tonight, but I just might have to do that soon….

  18. Martha on October 7th, 2008 @ 21:58

    *workout zealot*

Gosh I almost miss they days when I was just a crazy drunk…
