That’s “Dr. Wee Lil Bit” Thankyouverymuch

On March 4, 2006 I started a mission. On September 30, 2011 I finished that mission. There was supposed to be much pomp and circumstance when I reached the Ph D level (325 unique beers) at Taco Mac, instead I achieved it alone. The night started at my local Taco Mac at Perimeter Place with coworkers. I was a mere four beers away from Ph D status. Unfortunately we had some of the worst service I’ve ever had at that Taco Mac — the waitress was overwhelmed by our table, and perhaps should not be in that line of work. After my third beer I was frustrated and when half of the table paid their tabs I got up and left so did I. I’d yet to eat dinner and knew that I was going to be headed back to work on Saturday morning, so I made the decision to get #325 in style at The Fred Bar where I knew that I’d be served by one of the four attractive young ladies who work there. I sat at the bar and was served a Lost Abbey Lost and Found and an order of baked chicken wings by Theresa. After eating my wings and drinking one beer (and a glass of water) I decided to drive back to the office to sleep. I woke up early on Saturday morning and worked until about noon, when I then did a walk of shame — with suitcase — to my car and returned to my house for the first time since leaving it on Tuesday morning.

Variety Playhouse One Of Two
After taking a major nap and later talking to my mother on the phone I convinced myself to rally in order to head to Variety Playhouse for the Ten Out Of Tenn show on Saturday night for which I’d already purchased a ticket. For the most part I had a great time at the show, at least once I moved away from the group of people who had no problem talking to one another straight through the first three songs. The only other down point in the evening was a slight frustrating conversation with one of the “security” staff who was hell bent on getting me to move out from standing in one of the wings even though I was not blocking the aisle way nor the exit doors. All I was trying to do was find a place where I could check the score or the Alabama v. Florida game (almost wish that I hadn’t) without having the brightness of my cellphone screen bother anyone near me.

It was the last night of the tour for the Ten Out Of Tenn gang. I think that each member of the group got to perform two of their songs before the ensemble finished the evening by performing Ring of Fire while milling amongst the crowd — hell, I think they even wandered outside as I heard the trumpets blaring while I was walking down the street toward my car.

Variety Playhouse Two Of Two
I went back to Variety Playhouse last night for the Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks show. As the first band played I gave myself one of the biggest cases of foot-in-mouth disease that I’ve ever had.

I’ve been a mutual Twitter follower with someone for quite awhile, but we’ve never met in person. As the opening band played she tweeted how awful she thought they were, and I replied that I agreed but was happy that they were loud enough the shitheads who were holding a conversation behind me (have I mentioned this pet peeve before? ;)). She returned a reply saying that we should meet, and that she and her friends were sitting in a section along the left side of the room. Huh, so was I. So, I replied that I’d get up after the band finished and come find her.

Anyone want to guess who was seated directly behind me?
Yep.

I wandered about the building and finally decided to suck it up and say hello. She asked me if they were the assholes (hey, I said shitheads) to which I earlier referred, and I jokingly said yes. She seemed to blow it off. We chatted for a few minutes and as Malkmus & the Jicks took the stage I exited stage left and headed to the front to stand in the pit.

I wonder if Dr. Wee Lil Bit can heal thy self…

As for the show it was good, not great, and I think that this will be the last time I pay to see Malkmus. I really like his music, but his live show just doesn’t do much for me.

On The Road Again
Oh boy! I’m headed OTP again today. This time it’s a quick trip up to Raleigh for college recruiting at NC State (and hopefully including dinner tonight with ITP-Readers Lisa and Randy and their yet-to-be-able-to-read-this-space children). In order to be prepared for this trip I spent a good amount of time doing laundry and packing yesterday. Oh boy!

  1. The Amazing Race update: wow, didn’t see that happening!

  2. Steve says:

The good news is I did not get thrown from a horse this weekend- the bad news is I didn’t attempted to ride him either. I did manage 35 miles over to Debbie’s folks house yesterday- a great day to be riding South as the wind was out of the North. The ride had a slightly delayed start- as I rode out of the gate I noticed one of the neighbors horses grazing down by the end of the driveway- outside of the fence!! Oops. Calling as I walked over to the neighbors’ house, he kindly came towards me, and the neighbor and I were able to get him back in the pasture. If you think hitting a deer with your car would make a mess, try a horse!

    Amazing Race- RTFD!

So sorry to see the Tide sweep over your Gators.. not.

  3. So sorry to see the Tide sweep over your Gators.. not.

We have a saying around the GatorNation — “Go f*ck yourself!” or is it “You may have won, but at least we don’t live in your shitty state!”? Kidding (slightly) of course. The better team won in Saturday night. I can respect that.

  4. Steve says:

Just let them play good football… nothing worse than a lopsided game.

  5. Stacy Fox says:

It is a fantastic year to be a Wisconsin sports fan! Brewers, Packers, Badgers…. 🙂 Just come on over to our side, Paulie!

And hahaha! I purposely watched TAR just in case there’d be a write-up. I’m assuming you’re caught up now by the “I didn’t see that happening” comment. Without ruining it for anyone else (except perhaps Terri), I do find my choice of picks this week uber amusing now. I didn’t pick any losers, but I did manage to pick both the #1 and the #9 (ie: the last to come in without getting booted!) on the same night. D’oh!

Safe travels to the NC! Boy, you’re OTP more than I am these days! 😉

  6. Martha says:

Friday night we met up with some friends at The Republic, to vent over a few beers about things happening at the gym. The owner did a ‘living social’ like deal and sold about 500!! If even 10% of them show up it’s going to suck. Plus Jerry quit/was kicked out on Thursday.

I ran yesterday, physically I felt find but I was all sorts of flustered mentality but the ‘group’, late start, no maps, missing water stop…I got to 15 and just quit.

Where do you sleep at your office, on the floor? Or do you have a couch? I can’t think of anything worse than not sleeping in my own bed.

Stacy, did you happen to catch Doctor Who Saturday night? O!M!G!

  7. Steve says:

Jerry quit/was kicked out of the gym??

  8. Barb says:

okay- Martha – give us more scoop – Jerry quit/got kicked out of the gym?

Steve – took me a minute, but I finally figured out RTFD…….

Jack@ss’s hottub got moved out of the driveway finally Saturday evening, it wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be, and he smoked up some tasty ribs & brisket, and I got to catch up with some hashers I never see anymore. Overall a nice evening.

Michelle, Sharon & I did a mtn bike ride yesterday, gorgeous, gorgeous day for a ride.

Watching football yesterday was crazy, Falcons tried hard to lose, and where I was sitting at Wild Wing had me watching the Giants/Cardinals game too, I started rooting for the Cardinals (a few tables of Giants fans nearby, and I always take the other team if I don’t really care), and then they blew it.

  9. Martha says:

Yeah, Jerry said something the owner didn’t like, he ‘warned’ Jerry he need to change his attitude, Jerry didn’t like being told what to do…basically a couple of 14 year old girls having a cat fight online…best part? I was CC’d on the whole thing. So depending on who’s side of the story you hear, Jerry either quit or was kicked out.

I don’t disagree with some of the things Jerry said, I do disagree with how he said them…anyway, that, along with other things happening (or not happening) at the gym means that we’ve started looking for a new one. I’m under contract until Jan so no changes for me until then.

  10. Steve says:

Must be great to have so many customers you can afford to drive them away…

Sorry Barb, RTFD is a well known term in the technical world. (read the f’ing documentation, for those who haven’t figured it out yet)

And it was a great day to ride, but I’m not quite ready to break out the tights yet. Can’t it just be 70 all day long? My 9AM start required a little more than just shorts.

  11. Martha says:

Agree Steve (on the weather) the only reason I ran as far as I did Sunday was it was just such perfect running weather. I started out at 7:30 wearing gloves! Love it.

The whole gym thing really had me upset last week. I really like it there, we have lots of friends, etc. But I’ve spoken with the owner about problems I’ve seen, the direction the gym is heading, and the issues I have with it, he let me know his first priority was ‘growing the business’ and couldn’t bother with those sorts of things.

He doesn’t seem to understand it cost more money to get new clients than to keep the ones he already has.

  12. bob says:

Paulie, we waved as we drove past Gainesville Thursday on the way to Orlando. Did you see us?

Steve, I use RTFM all the time. That term is very well known around here.

What is with this weather? I leave for 4 days and winter comes? I’m loving the cooler temps though.

  13. Stacy Fox says:

I still haven’t figured out RTFD! Am I really that slow?

Martha – I have NOT seen Doctor Who! Is it new?! Unfortunately, I do not get BBC America. However, the Comcast folks still put it OnDemand, so I can watch it even without the network (joy!)… I just never know when new ones are starting again. (“new” being relative, considering we that are state-side are always a year behind) Thanks for the tip – I’ll check it out tonight!

I’m sorry to hear that about your gym, too. I’ve actually heard this happening to a lot of CrossFit gyms. It did with the one I went to: the partners had a little different direction in vision. One was very dedicated to the program and the WODs; the other sort of altered things a little more based on individuals and what they needed — which I personally liked better, but then wasn’t “true” CrossFit, so to speak. Not to say anything bad about CF or anything: I’d still go if it weren’t way too far from home now.

  14. Randy says:

Looking forward to dinner tonight Paulie! What time do you touch down in the Triangle? Lisa works until 6pm, so I got to thinking – restaurants can get kinda busy by that time, so we might have to meet early for a beer whilst holding our table… Daddy and Uncle Paulie should be able to entertain a 5yr-old and a 2yr-old until Mommy gets there, right? OK, maybe we’ll need a pitcher…

  15. Barb says:

we didn’t ride until 1pm, so no need for the arm warmers (but I did bring them, just in case)

who’s all going to Savannah? trying to get organized for our Wheelhopper trail, we get to use yellow chalk only. OH joy, it is going to take forever to lay trail, but at least I don’t ahve to carry a bunch of flour.
Plus just all the other crap we need for a bring for an out of town hash.

  16. HI! Been busy interviewing people today. Checking in quickly before wrapping up and heading to the airport.

Randy: “Scheduled” to land at 5:50pm. Won’t be checking luggage, but will have to get the car rental at the offsite facility. I’ll text you and Lisa upon our arrival. Uncle Paulie can always keep young children entertained “Okay, now walk over there and pretend to bump into that redhead.” 🙂 Just let me know where I should drive when we land.

Stacy: “RTFD” in at TAR-sense is Read The Fucking Directions. No spoilers, but let’s just say that my picks really didn’t come to fruition either.

Martha: Sorry to hear about your gym. No that it’s getting chilly I realize that I really need to return your heating pad (and other things you lent me at accident time).

All bike riders: Very windy (and chilly) this past weekend, I was kinda glad that my weekend got packed with work and chores as they gave me an excuse for not riding. 😉

  17. Terri (SW) says:

Hi! Watched AR last night…blanked on both of my picks :P. I love this group though…especially love Team Dude-Sweet!
