“Sunshine State” My Ass!!!

I’m still in Florida, doing little more than eating, getting fatter, and taking people’s money at bingo (okay, I only won one game for $50). Unfortunately I have once again broken my walking habit thanks in part to the horrible weather we had this weekend. This morning I am seeing the sun, and only partial sun for the time being, for the first time since pulling into my mother’s driveway on Friday; and yesterday we received somewhere around seven inches of rain.

Come hell or high water I’m going to try any make my escape from Florida after lunch, and it looks as if I’ll get to wrestle with Tropical Storm Debby for another day.

Wish me luck, I probably need it.

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

but- I’m betting your mom has liked having you there during all this bad weather.

Good luck, hopefully the drive home won’t be totally wet.

Take your time, remember the farther north you get, the better the conditions will be.

I’m sitting at home in a complete stupor after 6 days of National Championships. Great crew of folks, some I went through Nat Comm school with 6 years ago and have never worked with before. Got a lot of “hands on” training in both bike measurement and caravan management (managing the car race around the bike race). Not something you get to do at anything but a bigtime event. I was Comm 2 (out with the break) yesterday for the mens elite and saw some great racing over 105 miles that didn’t start until 1 PM !!! A break eventually grew to 19 riders with 20 miles to go, but mostly fell apart and then 3 guys still had enough to reset and stayed clear to the end. Amazing effort on a brutal course.

The weeks’ highlight was Friday nights U23 crit. A great race capped off with the supposed winner getting pipped at the line while he celebrated! There are picures of him as he gets pipped starting to form the letter F. Too funny.

Off for more battery recharging… back in the orafice tomorrow.

How far shall we ride on Saturday?

  4. It’s been good, though I probably would have stayed at the Dali museum a lot longer had I gone there alone.

I’m caught up on my daytime tv, and getting ready to hit the road again. I have a long haul ahead of me…

  5. Barb says:

Allan & I are game for whatever distance Saturday, Drew & Michelle are planning to attend – I don’t think she will want to do anything long, and she doesn’t do real well in the heat….. how hot is it supposed to be Saturday? What time do we plan to start riding? As always, Allan will be working friday night, lets hope he gets more sleep than he did this past weekend, he had to bail on the ride Sunday due to only 1 hour of sleep. We could get to your house by 9am if we need to.

I rode 67 very hot miles on Sunday – I’m pretty tired today. Got the peer pressure from JoAnna, Sarah & Sally, I tried to talk them into taking the turn for the 48, but they all said no. It was a good ride, I felt pretty good, but it was freaking HOT.

  6. Martha says:

Argh…I had two paragraphs typed up and then they were gone.

    So, be careful driving.

    It’s really hot here.

and Steve what does ‘pipped at the line’ mean??

  7. Bummer, Martha.

I’ll ride whatever distance selected poorly, so I am in for whatever.

I’ll be more in the loop for the rest of the week.

  8. Steve says:

Pipped is simply beaten… literally the guy had his arms in the air and the other rider went under them to take the win. For a national championship, no less.

I just looked at the weather for the weekend- one word, hot. I think we could start early, have a short option of 15 (which would circle to within a half mile of the farm, and the rest that want to go further could keep going. I wouldn’t want to start too “crack of dawn”.. wheels up at 09:30?

  9. Barb says:

0930 will work for us – we will be there a little early if at all possible.

  10. Whew, what a rough day for driving.

I’ll be there in time to ride by 0930 Saturday, hoping the only Debby / Debbie in the vicinity is the one that lives there. 🙂
