Powerless

Power has been out at the ITP Estate for nearly eighteen hours.

Ugh.

Normal blog post planned for today will be thrown out along with all of the perishable food that resides in my freezer or refrigerator.

I’ve already reflexively tried to turn light switches this morning. It looks like it it’s gonna be a long outage. Power was out in Buckhead for 4 days during Opal in 1995. I’m hoping proximity to the zoo counts for something this time.

Feel free to come to Marietta – we never lost power at all.
Allan is home, he is a non essential employee these days.
It really wasn’t all that bad up near us. Seemed like a typical storm.

  3. Barb says:

and- go get some ice – most of your food will be okay if you get them into a cooler.

    Power is back! Hooray!

Everything in the freezer seems to have remained frozen.

      • Barb says:

I read that you are supposed to have a frozen glass of water in the freezer, and put a coin on top. If the coin isn’t on top when you get your power back, then you know it all got warm.

        • Huh, clever.

I emptied the ice bucket prior to the storm and checked shortly after power was restored and there was no wetness at the bottom of the ice bucket.

I will probably toss perishable things from the refrigerator since the temperature read higher than 40° F when I opened it.

  5. From the list of roads closed due to trees it appears that Dunwoody / Sandy Springs got hit the hardest locally.

Good morning from Midtown! I wanted a hot shower and even though the bank is “essential staff only” there are a lot of folks here (perhaps a bit over important?)

Power went off at home about 1:15. Lost some weakened trees in the woods and one stand alone tree in the pasture that I’ll have to get up. Barb, I think you’re right- it seemed like a really bad thunderstorm without the thunder and just went on for hours.

There are currently 5 of us on a video call (just to act like an office, I guess). I have my camera blocked unless I have something to say. Sadly, when the video is not live, the picture displayed is from your ID and you can’t monkey with it, otherwise I’d have some fun.

  7. Just ate “lunch” because I have been awake and moving so long that I thought it was lunchtime. Oops.

Debating on whether or not I will venture out for German class tonight, assuming Goethe has reopened. Obviously I am not prepared, but this is the final class of this session.

  8. Other things:

    – met one of my neighbors again today, she was out for a walk because she was tired of being indoors.

    – I talked to her briefly while I was out picking up the many small stocks that will be problematic for the hipster mower when I mow again.

    – today is a “hip/leg” hurts day

    – Apple iPhone event at 1:00 EDT. Yes, I know this only interests those of us who give a shit about Apple.

Just found out that Goethe has canceled classes tonight.

Zoo proximity isn’t counting for much over here. 24 hours with no power and counting.

    • Certainly sorry to read that. Just saw a few electric trucks go down my street, hopefully they will get to you very soon.

      • ITP Lurker says:

Thank you. I keep checking the outage map, and the number of outages in this area continues to creep down, so I have hope that I’ll be back online this evening, or hopefully tomorrow at the latest. The inverter for my car I bought at the last minute before the storm has come in remarkably handy yesterday and today for keeping my laptop and other devices charged.

        • Found out my friend Hank, who lives near Clairmont / Buford Hwy is also still without power.

I felt fortunate to have two good batteries for recharging devices, and that the cellular networks didn’t go down as well.
