On my ride last night my massive seat bag became dislodged, and landed on the rear tire, acting like a brake, and causing me to stop. By the time I realized what had happened a few holes had been burned through the plastic of the bag from the friction of the tire. Old me would be shopping for a new one, current me will attempt to repair the holes. This is one way a lack of salary has changed me.

I solved today’s Wordle in three attempts; my starter today was RISEN

  1. I still can’t believe that I can’t successfully edit a blog post from my iPhone. The WordPress web interface doesn’t allow me to scroll, and the virtual keyboard gets in the way…

I checked to see what a replacement bag would cost me, $48 at Amazon, $58 at REI. I will definitely attempt a repair to ensure it’s waterproof again.

    Heardle fail.

  3. Jenka says:

Good morning! It looks like my mother may pass away today or tomorrow. She’s been in the hospital for a couple months and on Friday she went to the ICU with a massive pulmonary embolism (a large blood clot in her lungs) so they put her on a ventilator. Then she had a massive stroke on Saturday. She can’t breathe on her own and the stroke caused so much damage that she can’t understand words or even the world around her. She has a living will that says not to keep her alive as a vegetable, so they are taking the vent out and making her comfortable. I am looking at flights to Mass tomorrow, although it might not be necessary. Good times! I’m fine, we were estranged, it’s just weird.

    • Steve says:

Jenka, I am sorry to hear this.

    • Debbie says:

I’m sorry Jenka. Estranged or not, losing a parent is hard. Take care of yourself.

    • David says:

Oh Jenka, I *so* feel you. I’m estranged from both of my parents. My father turned 80 earlier this the month, and I’ve had a weird mix of feelings over not being able to celebrate it with him, but there’s also NO FUCKING WAY that I can go there.

I’m not clear what I’ll feel when my parents pass. I know on one level there’ll be some relief. There certainly won’t be any rapprochement between now and then. Been there, tried that countless ways, not gonna happen.

It is complicated. And weird. Paulie has my contact info if you ever want to compare notes. I’m truly sorry for your loss, both with regard to whatever caused the estrangement, and the present day.

    • Jenka says:

Thank you all, I appreciate the sentiments.

David, yeah, it’s mostly relief that that stress is going away, and also I feel bad that she’s going through such a horrible time. I didn’t wish ill of her, just didn’t want to be around her. My therapist says I’m very good at self care. Heh!

      • David says:

Jenka, I’ve gotten the hang of self-care, but man it was a foreign concept when I first started therapy. Sheesh.

Wordle in 4 starting with CROWD, Mini in 2.5

Though the rain was on the way out late yesterday, instead of a ride, George and I went for a run. He mostly gets it and stays alongside, but he’s still basically a puppy, so has no attention span. Makes running a consistent pace a little tough.

Received an invite to a wedding to be held at the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville. Kind of a curious location, but should be fun. Might be an overnight occasion as there will be some drinking involved.

No weekend plans. Haven’t even looked at the weather forecast. Anyone riding? Do we need to have a Comet meetup?

    -FP

    • Running? What’s that?

The wedding I am attending next month is in Norcross, and since I know drinking will occur I have secured a hotel room in the area. This weekend I need to think about getting a suit for the wedding.

Sunday is a Black Sheep day! So, I’m free and could be up for a ride. If it turns out to just be the two of us I would consider driving to Silk Sheets as well.

    • David says:

Summer Shade Festival is this weekend, so I’ll be around for that. My physical therapist said that riding my bike would be good for the swelling in my knee, so I’m under doctor’s orders to ride. Dang it! 😉 I’m game for a Comet ride in late September/early October, if there’s interest in getting a date on the calendar.

I’m so off of my Wordle/Heardle game lately. The Excel book is set in stone, the printing company starts carving the tablets today, if you will. I’ll take the weekend to recover from the all-nighter I pulled on Thursday. I had a hard cut off of midnight last night and was at my desk until 10:00 PM. I was so tired I could only see with one eye, and I was too tired to keep that eye closed, so I was having to hold one hand over my eye and type with the other. Good times. But it’s done, and it’s a career goal accomplished. It’s been a goal for more than 20 years to eventually write a book on Excel, so I put everything into it that I had.

    • Jenka says:

A few years ago I went to a wedding at Fernbank Museum and it was ah-mazing.

  5. Sal says:

Weddings are held at Tellus a lot. Tammy In My Behind volunteers there and volunteers for other events there as well. Finished my run and walking the dog. So I haven’t had a chance to play any games yet. Read your blog first. :). Sorry about your bike bag. And sorry about your mom Jenka. :(.

  6. Ronnie AKA Bill says:

Your cheap brother (that’s me) would use duct tape.

    • There is a possibility duct tape will play a roll. I may try to patch it by cutting up an old tube and patching it with rubber cement.

      • Steve says:

Why does it have to be waterproof? A ziploc bag for your phone and wallet in your jersey pocket is all you need.

        Hi Ronnie!

        • Because it started life as a dry bag, and I would like to keep things in the bag dry. I haven’t had the most luck putting things in ziploc bags, they always manage to get holes in them. Granted, this is not for hashing so I don’t need it the be waterproof under water.

  7. Steve says:

Just forwarded you an email about a volunteer opportunity next week. Could be fun.

  8. Debbie says:

Wordle in 3 starting with TRAIN and Mini in :36.

Covid test percolating. All week I’ve felt like I was hit by a truck. We have a staff retreat next week and I don’t want to be the Typhoid Mary of the staff.

Two of my tomato plants are indeterminate and they’ve got a second wave of fruit on the vines, but the plants are so enormous that it’s hard to see what all is in there. The biggest producer of the 5 is my least favorite in terms of size and flavor. I think I’m going to cull it and the cherry tomato variety. My attention span for gardening has almost run out.

    Happy Friday!

  9. Barb says:

its a busy day over here – no time to play.
I hate busy Fridays. Still haven’t gotten around to showering.
I’m home alone – so not like it matters.
    Just thought I’d say hi

  10. Steve, name the start and time you want to be wheels on the ground Sunday and I will meet you there and then.

  11. Barb says:

We won’t be able to keep up, but we might be interested in joining on Sunday.
    (I guess I should ask Allan…. 😉

  12. Steve says:

How about 0900 at Cochran Mill for a nice ride on silk sheets? I guess I better go see how the road bike is doing. Been a bit neglected lately.
