I Know Somebody Not Properly Trained For Sunday

Published by Paulie [eatl/ga] on February 6, 2009 08:10 am under My Daily Life

How is it that the Red Top Rumble is this Sunday? Since January 1st I have run a grand total of three miles. My participation in the run (I shan’t call it a “race” as I never had a chance of winning) is in question. My attendance at the event is not however. Even though there is a film photostroll in East Atlanta Sunday morning I want to go up and meet the race’s director because she hails from Winnipeg. That’s right, I’m going to meet a real Winnipeggan, Winnipegger?

All Those Photogs, So Few Shutter Presses
As I mentioned yesterday I blew off going to see “Tough Smart Cookie” (thanks for the correction Holly) at the Hertz Stage (and have successfully exchanged my ticket for one next week) and went to the meetup for Atlanta Photography Exposure instead.

The meetup was held at Marlow’s Tavern (Northlake). I had never been to a Marlow’s Tavern, in fact I admit I had no idea they existed. This installment of their tavern is attached to the Double Tree hotel just inside the perimeter on Lavista Road. The bar itself was nice (nothing to write home about), the beer was okay (I drank Yeungling), and their appetizers were quite tasty (it didn’t hurt that I was very hungry and that they were free).

It was a really fun time. I believe that over forty people were in attendance, including many people whose company I enjoy but don’t see often enough. Lest you think that all we do is discuss aperture and shutter speeds, this funny bit of video was one of the topics of conversation Don Draper’s Guide To Picking Up Women (Thanks to Romanlily for the linkage)

Debating An Internet Switch
Well, it’s that time again. I am paying too much for my internet access at home and am contemplating switching providers again. It would be a convenient time to switch because I still can’t remember my password for my current provider and have not had the chance to contact them.
Every time I go through this I wind up staying put. I have a huge fear of switching to one of the Big Guys (AT&T or Comcast) and having my downloads monitored and throttled. Further, anytime you ever ask a customer of AT&T or Comcast they tell you how much they hate their service.

Hell’s Kitchen
I am buffering up Hell’s Kitchen via Hulu so that I can listen to it as I work today. How cool is that?

So Much Going On This Weekend
Tonight I am going to try and make it to The EARL to see Gringo Star perform. It’s been some time since I’ve seen the lads on stage and am looking forward to hearing them perform their new tunes and possibly taking some shots. No I am not. Gringo Star plays at The EARL March 6th, not February 6th. This is what happens when a non-leap year February starts on a Sunday and I don’t pay attention to my calendar entering. Thanks Mindy for setting me straight.

Tomorrow will be an extremely busy day. Photography will be involved. Work will be involved. Home organization will be involved. And I will definitely end the night at The EARL because I possess a ticket for one of Patton Oswalt’s sets.

Sunday, well you already know all about that.

You can do it, Paulie…….if I can complete a 50k with a broken foot and no real running since September…you can do 11 miles. The race director’s dad flew in yesterday to surprise her and to help out with the race….so you may be able to chat him up as well….

See you on Sunday…should be a great day weather wise! :)

  2. Paulie [eatl/ga] on February 6th, 2009 @ 08:40

Sal, I’ll never compare my ability to do anything with your ability. I’ll make a day-of decision about running but guarantee to be there for the event. Heck, if I don’t run I’ll volunteer to shoot photos or work an aid station.

That’s fantastic that her dad has come down. I know being RD and having her dad around will make her day busy. I just plan to introduce myself and stay out of her way.

    See you Sunday!

  3. Martha on February 6th, 2009 @ 09:14

I wish I had known you were at Northlake last night. Traffic was so bad last night and I didn’t have to hurry home (thanks Nancy) so I hopped off 285 and wandered around the Mall for an hour…boy is that place sad.

Do you want to carpool with us Sunday? Karyn is bring the beer. I’m so looking forward to Sunday, it will be nice to run in decent weather for a change. This sub-freezing weather has been bad for my workouts.

I have Comcast for my internet and cable, cable service isn’t the best but I’ve had no problem with the internet, of course I’m not a super user like you.

  4. Paulie [eatl/ga] on February 6th, 2009 @ 09:24

It was a last-minute decision and didn’t really know where that Marlow’s was. I haven’t been in that mall in years. The last time I was I was either headed to Old Navy or Sears.

I’m going to drive solo. This way if all I want to do is photography on Sunday I have the ability to wander without consideration of others. But thanks for the offer. The sub-freezing weather has not affected my workouts at all. They would be non-existent regardless of the temperature.

I went to a free “help train our staff before we actually open this restaurant” dinner at Marlow’s Tavern in Duluth a few weeks back. I thought the food was excellent, I had a salmon dish, and Allan has a steak and eggs dish.

We have Bellsouth (now AT&T) DSL, I thiknk it works fine, but like Martha says, we aren’t super users either. I did just get an flyer in the mail for the new AT&T U-verse service, I haven’t checked it out 9anyone heard of it, good or bad?) , but if it does what it says it does, we are thinking about dumping Direct TV & trying it. There is no contract, but I’m not sure what I have with Diret TV.

  6. Paulie [eatl/ga] on February 6th, 2009 @ 09:32

A lot of people like AT&T’s U-verse. You have TiVo with DirecTV, right? I know U-verse has dvr capabilities but I’m not sure how it compares.

The appetizers I tried last night were
    - fried shrimp (delicious!)
    - kettle chips (very good)
    - hummus with pita, carrots, celery (good, but far from special)

Damn, I have the sniffles today. I hope that I am not getting the sickness that I’ve been escaping for the past six weeks in Atlanta.

  7. Andrew on February 6th, 2009 @ 10:08

Bellsouth DSL has been fine for me. I have their fastest service and it’s been fast, and somewhat reliable.

AT&T U-verse is somewhat hit or miss with whether it’s available in your area. Apart from Tivo, the Directv and Dish DVR’s are at the top of the heap. I’d probably take a bullet before switching to a cable branded DVR (Comcast or AT&T). I just don’t need that kind of inattention to detail and a user interface that only makes sense to some dude who hasn’t seen the light of day in 13 years holed up in the back of a cable company research lab.

  8. Steve on February 6th, 2009 @ 10:43

Out here at the day spa, we have a fairly reliable cable service- DSL wasn’t an option because we’re a fer piece from the central orifice. The other option was pony express.

So, since I’m not a geek – Andrew, help me out here. Is the U-verse considered a cable type of DVR service? it must be offered in my neighborhood, because they are offering $200 cash back to sign up, with no contract. I love my direct TV service, and don’t want to switch unless I know something will work.

  10. Mindy on February 6th, 2009 @ 17:02

    isn’t Gringo Star next month?

  11. Paulie [eatl/ga] on February 6th, 2009 @ 17:05

Well shit! Mindy, you are absolutely correct. Thanks! Unfortunately this also means that I won’t be seeing them perform as I will not be in Atlanta that day. Bummer.
