On Saturday morning I did a few hours of WLF choring, and chored hard. I picked up a bunch of limbs, pulled more poke weed, removed a small tree stump that I had not been able to remove previously, created a new small squash patch by sowing six seeds (this is mostly for weed suppression, but I will be interested to see if this area of the yard gets enough sun to grow squash), sowed some fava beans (I know, it’s the wrong time of year for this), and did some general cleanup. Along the way I also suffered another ant bite on my back, discovered that some animal had stolen more of my larger green tomatoes, and saw that my first butternut squash has been attacked by some insect. Dangen!

I realize that my reputation for not liking change is well known, however when the DOT converts a one-way street to a two-way street, and to the best of my knowledge doing so without any signage, that’s bullshit. Such was the case when headed to the Ace Hardware in Grant Park and turned left off Memorial onto Loomis, and was scared shitless when a car was headed toward me! According to one of the Ace employees the road had been changed just the day before. Even Google Maps still shows it as a one-way street.

I was home from the hardware store in time to watch a Bundesliga 2 game on ESPN; the game featured Werder Bremen at Düsseldorf. Try as they may to give the game away, Werder Bremen managed to win. 😅 Two of their goals were scored by Joshua Sergeant, the American whose time with the club is limited as rumors swirl that he will be sold off in a salary reduction by the team. Such is the paradox of Bundesliga 2, you want to win the league in order to get back into the top level Bundesliga, but there is much less money in the second division (especially after Covid), so the better players on the team have to get sold off.

After seeing a photo from Friday night’s crowds at the Cherry Blossom festival in Brookhaven it was decided by all that going on Saturday night was probably a bad idea. And from what I saw of Lollapalooza in Chicago on Hulu, the Brookhaven crowd was small. I hope we haven’t dropped our defenses too early and experience a surge in Covid because of these large gatherings.

I was awoken on Sunday morning at 3am by the sound of thunder, and the rain. Oy. I had been planning to do more WLF choring yesterday morning, but the wet grounds all but nullified that. I managed to get out and survey the grounds, and in the process harvested a small clutch of Roma tomatoes, and the two kohlrabi that were ready. I have a slew of tomatoes, cucumbers, and now two kohlrabi to use in dishes. What dishes these will be still eludes me. Also up for consideration are more green beans and the half dozen okra on one set of my okra plants. I guess I’ve not done a great job preparing for success? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yesterday was also a Black Sheep hashing day. As Black Sheep trails go it wasn’t hard, and I was okay with that. Glory Mole and I were not DFL, woot!, and there was a fun pool ending.

Today starts my final week at “XYZ Corp, Mark II”. I’m supposed to have a chat with the boss’s boss today, and then somehow arrange to return all of my company-owned equipment. My new, new normal starts next week! Weather permitting I have a lot of choring in mind, and may even start biking again.

Tonight’s hash starts at Brownwood Park again. So, unless something unthinkable happens, like unpredicted rain arrives and washes away trail, I will be in attendance.

Hope you had a happy and healthy weekend.

  1. No time for WLF choring this morning, I slept too late. I did have enough time to make myself a tomato sandwich for breakfast however. 😋

    • For a month I’ve been watching YouTube channels boast about their zucchini production. In that time I’ve had only one plant create one zucchini. I harvested that zucchini a few minutes ago only to find it had two worm holes, and when I cut it open, two worms inside. MOTHER FUCKER! I have read about and seen the damage done to squash by vine borers and bugs that look like ladybugs that eat their leaves, but no one has mentioned this.

      • Barb says:

Yuck. Worms inside would really not make me happy.

Critters are stealing my tomatoes as well.
I picked 2 bigger green ones & brought them inside to turn red.
(Saw one laying in the neighbors yard).

    Pretty busy weekend.

Friday night Brewery Road was at Red Hare (original location, not on the Square)
Good times, they are a fun band.

Saturday – got a good walk in, & then spent the afternoon at Slippery’s pool.

Sunday’s early morning storm woke us up to the sound of a tree falling. Allan looked out & nothing in our yard. Found out in the morning it was a big hardwood landing on the next door neighbors house. They are screwed. They got a tree service & a crane out by noon (impressive). I hope they got it tarped before it started to rain last night.
We went over to the in-laws & got a small tree off their fence & shed, then since the chainsaw was out, trimmed some other branches. That was tiring enough, so we bimbo’d the hash & just enjoyed the pool ending.

    • It rained in Marietta last night? Huh. Unless I am mistaken we didn’t get any at the ITP Estate.

I am ashamed to say that I may be looking forward to seeing your neighbor’s YouTube video about the tree.

      • Barb says:

I wonder if she will do a video. She’s still in shock about everything. I’ll suggest it. Haha.
I don’t think it rained much, but it did rain.

      • I can understand her being in shock. However, I think anyone who starts a YouTube channel would certainly make a video about it. See also: bloggers 😉😂

  3. Steve Brady says:

Well, I have a nice blog post typed on the laptop, but as the power is out at the house, we went to breakfast.

    ETA on power is 1PM.

    More later.

  4. Making InstantPot spaghetti for lunch. Why? Because I have so many tomatoes, and it’s been too long since I’ve used my InstantPot.

  5. Steve says:

20 miles on the bike Saturday morning, before it got too hot. Feed store run and lunch in Haralson. Debbie complained that the horses weren’t drinking their water because of all the tadpoles. I moved them to another tank and refilled for the horses. They had been drinking, but perhaps not as much. Was going to take the tadpoles across to the neighbors pond, but thought better of it. Them being assholes and whatnot…

Sunday had me on my scooter to breakfast, then back home to watch Olympics. Debbie rode and they managed to stir up yellowjackets. Debbie was not stung, but several others were.

My late afternoon chore was adding a gate (at least an opening) in the barbed wire fence. I don’t “do” barbed wire and don’t know what is normally used to tension it, but I managed to get it split and terminated. Now to find a gate.

Currently sitting in the dark (well, the power’s off) since 0700. GPC is aware and has no estimate. Just a spot around Luthersville. Odd. The power was off through the night once, then this. I suppose the fail over failed.

(Power on as I was feeding the horses- 1145. 3 big GP trucks in “downtown” Luthersville, so a tree mush have fallen. I’m guessing it rerouted, then they decided they better take it all down to repair- hence the blinking clock when I awoke, then the real outage.)

  6. Filled my belly with delicious InstantPot spaghetti. Really hope that I get to hash tonight in an effort to work some of it off.

    • Bonnie says:

I didn’t gain any weight from yesterday’s debauchery, whew! Will need to be responsible tonight to keep it that way. But, cake! (Read: icing) 😂 I hear there will be other temptations tonight as well.

    • Good on you! Depending on tonight’s end I will most likely be willing to split a meal with you if you want to eat. I need to remember that tomorrow is a weigh-in day. 🙄
