This blog post was a long weekend in the making, it will be long.
TLDR;

Paulie’s “Making New Memories” Tour
06/22/2023: The Beths, High Dive, Gainesville FL
06/23/2023: Dayroom, Smith’s Olde Bar, Atlanta GA
06/24/2023: Dayroom, Smith’s Olde Bar, Atlanta GA

You may recall I didn’t stay for the entire show The Beths performed at Masquerade earlier this year, so this is my redemption.

What is the significance of seeing these bands?
11/30/2019 (Last Concert before COVID): Dayroom, Rembrandt’s, Atlanta GA
02/18/2022 (First Concert after COVID): The Beths, Masquerade, Atlanta GA

Thursday’s show was fun. The first opening band was from Gainesville, but they announced that they were moving to Atlanta. The second opening band was from Atlanta. By the time The Beths came out for their encore it was midnight and raining again, so I decided that I should return to my AirBnB in order to get a good night’s rest for my drive home. Other than the show itself, I received two compliments for my The Hold Steady t-shirt, which I wore specifically to show my indie street cred.

Friday’s show was fun in a different way. On Thursday night I was one of the “old people” at the show, on Friday (and Saturday) I was in my age bracket. The sad thing was, I was alone, and worse than that I realized that I have no one with whom I have history with Dayroom so I couldn’t reminisce with anyone.

Saturday’s show was nearly identical, with the two sets swapped. If I had to compare, the band sounded better Saturday, but had far more audience banter on Friday.

One key to the effective use of earplugs is remembering where you put them after the last time you wore them. Thus, on my three night tour I failed to wear the fancy pants earplugs that I have bought for myself. I’m certain that I will find them in the upcoming weeks, too late to be of use.

I bought my birthday gift for myself this weekend. After BRAG I started contemplating buying a new tent. Well, lo and behold REI put the tent I wanted on sale, at a 40% discount. To sweeten the deal I also bought a $200 REI gift card using Ibotta (I screwed up and should have bought a $250 one) and saved 5% off the purchase of it, thus adding another $10 to my savings. Happy Early Birthday to me!

I fought hard, with only a modicum of success, to clean up WLF. It’s a goddamn jungle out there. I finally know what it is like to be a person with too much zucchini. By WLF standards I can’t keep up with the production from my plants. I’m not complaining, but am wondering just how much I can eat. I think this week I will try a tofu recipe, but substitute chunks of zucchini in place of the tofu.

I solved today’s Wordle in four attempts; my starter today was INEPT.

Wordle in 2! Strted with STAIN, so you know my deuce was a lucky guess.

After 3 trips to home improvement stores, I repaired the screen on the front porch. 1st error my own, in not measuring, 2nd error mine and Home Depot in that I knew I needed 48″ screen and pulled a 36″ out of the bin and never checked. It’s done now and I didn’t have to kill anyone.

A scooter ride Saturday to breakfast, then to CVS for my tetanus shot.

We finally wrapped up Firefly Lane. My whiplash from the frequent flashbacks should heal completely.

Hello from sunny Florida, did you see me driving south as you were driving north?

Good times so far down here, wake surfing/wakeboarding followed by hanging with my sisters boat friends on Saturday then watched your Gators lose the baseball game.
Sunday was a fundraiser for a firefighter who had a heart attack on shift, long story but ended up being at the hospital when he fell out. Fundraiser was at the local Elks lodge and had a cornhole tournament and raffle then the Reedy Creek fire bagpipe and drumline band show up. Good times were had.
We also watched your Gators remember how to play baseball, they handed a beating to LSU.

    • steve says:

The Gay-tors handed LSU a 24-4 beat down! Amazing.

Some impressive wakeboarding videos I saw Bob. And was that Travis trying to cross the wake on skis and bought it?

      • Bob says:

That was Travis on the wakeboard, he did really well. He may try surfing next time. Surfing is much more fun than I imagined.
I thought about you Steve when the bagpipe band came marching in yesterday, you would have enjoyed it.

      • Hope they have more runs in store for today’s rubber match.

    • Didn’t see you. Once I read that Travis may be behind the wheel I took backroads to Monetzuma. 🙂

    • Sally says:

Your videos looked fun. Glad you’re having fun in Florida.

I feel like Kat Karnes is a big Dayroom fan – and maybe Terri – (Star Whore?)
I know I’ve heard someone other than you talk about that band.

Reunion weekend was very fun & exhausting – small talking to so many people. There were so many that aren’t on facebook, or are lurker FB people, so there was plenty to ask about, etc. I bet we had around 100 of the 143 still alive that showed up. I asked the organizers if we could get a list of everyone that showed up (& who didn’t).

plenty of family time too – all 5 of us kids were here – another family photo was taken.

    • steve says:

      Sounds like fun, Barb.

I hope Wheelhopper was wrapped up when that storm line came through. There was a lot of red over Villa Rica.

      • Barb says:

Allan said Wheelhopper was kind of a clusterf@ck – it took a village to figure out & follow the marks.
So, you might be happy you skipped it.
He was home before any weather hit – he was going to go swim at Breaststroke’s – but that didn’t happen.

        • Sally says:

From what I could tell, I was glad I didn’t do Wheelhopper. But I did jump in Breast Stroke’s pool right before the storm hit. Always stopped in too. We missed Allan. 🙂 Worked on Saturday and then attended a pool party with way too much food!!! GUTS run in the mountains on Sunday. Started at Woody’s Gap.

    • Kat, Erin Smully, and Terri all Dayroom fans. All three were previously committed, so not at either show. I couldn’t reminisce with them because we didn’t meet one another until after Dayroom broke up.

  4. Stacy Fox says:

Nice to see you on the random run-in last night!

  5. Been a productive morning, I completed a jigsaw puzzle, and then drove over to Decatur to buy groceries, fill the M6 with gasoline, and renew the M6’s tag for another year using the kiosk at Kroger. I won’t even complain about the $3.25 convenience fee, especially since there was no one using the kiosk when I arrived. Woot!

  6. steve says:

Debbie and I were cracking up over this news item yesterday. Can you imagine unlimited first class travel AND still picking up FF miles?

Wordle in 3, although I got an assist. I stalled out at after 2, and got tired of starting at the screen and googled a hint that a friend gave. I wouldn’t have gotten the hint without looking it up.

I had a lovely rescheduled Father’s Day with my kids on Saturday. We went to Fort Mountain State Park, and the hawks were out in force at the overlook. It’s such a crap shoot, some days there aren’t any hawks. But it’s pretty damn glorious when they’re out. In addition to hiking we rented a pedal boat for an hour, and then did a bit of time travel by eating at a meat-and-three called Edna’s Restaurant that is one of the few places inflation hasn’t touched.

Yesterday I walked for three miles with my friend Harris. We had a great time, but man the heat zapped me, I slogged home from the Chattahoochee in Roswell and then laid around the rest of the day. I haven’t had a slug day in a while, those are good in the mix.

    Belize awaits this weekend!

  8. Jenka says:

Ugh, what a day. As Steve said last week, don’t take two weeks off and expect to get much done the first day. So many emails!

My tag renewal notification never arrived this year, which I didn’t even realize until last week. Now I have to get my emissions done and figure out how to renew online without the form. Is that even possible? I wish DeKalb County had those kiosks!

    • Jenka says:

WAIT. Paulie’s in DeKalb County, and he used a kiosk! *Off to do research*

      • steve says:

I was about to say you should be able to use a kiosk!

You trip looked amazing. I hope you had a great time.

      • I went to the Kroger at North Decatur and Dekalb Industrial. If you don’t have your renewal letter you can scan your driver’s license. You must pay with a credit card.

      • Jenka says:

It looks like there’s one at Murder Kroger, which is right near my doggie daycare. The website says if your county participates you can use any kiosk. I’m saved! Heh.

  9. Barb says:

Allan’s list of projects is getting long – he is going to be busy Wednesday & Thursday.

    • Since my productive morning I have:
      made/eaten lunch
      taken a long, hard nap
pulled my trash an in from the curb

I have a lot more to accomplish today, I should get cracking
