The week between is turning out to be a slow one for me, and considering the bad news I keep hearing, is okay.

Yesterday’s highlights were going to Lowes and then picking up more free pots in the morning, and taking a walk which garnered no freebies for WLF, but did provide enough exercise to close my rings in the afternoon.

On my walk I listened to a new-to-me podcast called “Bobby & Jens”. The hosts, Bobby Julich and Jens Voigt are former world class cyclist and interview people who are into cycling. Yesterday I listened to their conversation with Brett Favre, yes the NFL Hall of Fame quarterback, who has taken up the sport in his retirement.

I’ve continued to do some pleasure reading, at the expense of technical skill building. 🤔

Every meal yesterday was a leftover, which is good because it means that I am consuming food already purchased. Such will not be the case today however, as I have decided to make a sausage, carrot, potato, and cabbage dish to bring to Betsy’s tonight so I will need to procure its ingredients this morning at Publix.

While I try not to put too much credence in long away weather forecasts, I am someone taken aback by what I see coming on Sunday. According to my sources, after four days of clouds and rain a cold front will be moving in on Sunday and dropping our low temperatures into the thirties. And Monday the high is not supposed to get as high as fifty! I shall try to assess which plants in WLF will suffer from this and protect them accordingly if I can. And perhaps I will don my new NY Jets wool cap that Santa brought me! Wearing a new hat when your team has only one four games at this point in the season proves true fandom, right? 😁

That’s all I have today. Hope that you are feeling well, and are happy.

  1. Speaking of NFL Hall of Famers, I read this morning of the passing of John Madden.

  2. Back from my trip to Publix… and Kroger. I had to go to Kroger because Publix was sold out of cabbage 🤯 and white chocolate chips 😢, and I couldn’t find Beyond brats in the store. ☹️ I found two of those three at Kroger, which was also out of white chocolate chips, so I am going to experiment with butterscotch chips for my fudge instead.

Why would there be a run on cabbage? Is there a Christmas/New Year tradition I’m unaware of?

While I’m feeling fine, Debbie is back to feeling puny. Hopefully, she just has to ride this out a while longer. I’m officially “locked out” of the office until at least Jan. 6. I will also have to provide a negative PCR test to HR prior to reentry.

An otherwise slow day… more of the same expected today.

I hope you haven’t burned all your NYT access. I got tired of being locked out and sprang for an annual subscription for $4 a month for the first year and I really enjoy it. This is for you:

FYI, last day for Barnes & Noble’s super sale, 50% off all *hardcover* books.
    All hardcover books…

I’m closing out this wild year on a high note: I just signed a contract to write a book on Microsoft Excel, which has been a goal for at least 20 years now. I’m living proof that if you keep your eye on the prize you can and will get there. This one will be my fourth book, and in February I’ll sign the contract for my 5th book, which is just wild to me. For so long I never thought I’d write *one* book even, but once you’re in the publishing club, opportunities keep arising.

Certain of us will get a chuckle out of this next part: I can connect the dots on the current success in my career all the way back to the early 1990s where I was such an extreme nerd that I was paying $12.80/hour to be on CompuServe to answer questions others had about Lotus 1-2-3. That pretty quickly led to Lotus noticing me and giving me a free CompuServe account, and then The Cobb Group noticed me and asked if I wanted to freelance for their newsletters. Other opportunities arose along the way. I got in early on webinars in 2007, and lo and behold at the end of next year I’ll have written five books. You never can tell how something you’re doing today might shape your life decades down the road.

    • Steve says:

      How cool is that!

And now that I know you’re an Excel expert, I know who to reach out to when I’m stumped!

    • Bonnie says:

      👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

    • Barb says:

David- that’s really cool. I’m totally a barely intermediate person when it comes to Excel. I wish I knew more, but when you don’t use all the crazy features very often, it’s hard to remember what they do.

      • David says:

Thanks, Barb. My observation is most people can find their way around Excel, it’s the quirks and nuances that trip them up, so that’s what I’m going to write about. It’s what I teach in my webinars, so I’ll be able to write the book in my sleep. The other challenge is there tends to be 3 or 4 ways to almost everything in Excel, and that alone can be overwhelming.

    • Bob says:

      That is really cool David!
I have seen some of the backflips you can do with Excel and I’m always impressed. I do quite a bit of data manipulation with it but still consider myself a beginner.

      • David says:

Bob, you probably know more than you give yourself credit for. But’s easy to hit a snag and then question everything you know. Hence the space for my book. There are tons of beginner books, and tons of encyclopedic tomes, but not much in the middle aimed at helping the average user up their game.

  7. Bonnie says:

I will be traveling to Sandy Springs on Jan. 10 to taste test protein powder. Only $30 but oh well.

  8. Well, Cheddarhead was just canceled…

  9. Barb says:

    Breaking news……. Cheddarhead is cancelled.
    Too much Omicron going around.
I’m glad, I really don’t want to host a super spreader event.

Now, what to do this weekend?

Hopefully my flight will happen tomorrow.
Iowa State plays their bowl game against Clemson today in Orlando. Funny fact, Iowa plays their bowl Sunday in the same stadium.

Went to see the movie American Underdog yesterday. About home town (& my high school) guy Kurt Warner. Good story, nice feel good movie. Perfect $5 Tuesday afternoon thing to do.

    • Beat you to it Barb. Lol.

      While I am bummed, I think it’s the right call… again… 😢

      Good luck getting home.

    • Bonnie says:

Yeah, if it was at my house I would certainly be concerned too. And, I had just found out that the husband picked up a trip on the 1st so I could have gone to Cheddarhead. Dammit! I guess making extra money is more important to him than our bowl game after all. He will be flying a charter flight of a women’s NCAA basketball team, not sure if I’m allowed to say who…

      • Barb says:

Bonnie- he has to pay for your extravagant lifestyle. He needs the OT. 😜
Do charters pay different than regular Delta flights?

        • Bonnie says:

🤣🤣🤣. (Okay, there may be some truth to that.) I don’t think it pays any different, he still just gets paid per flight hour.

  10. Barb says:

Also, found out our buddy Vern has some sort of cancer.
He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma back in September. https://www.cancer.org/cancer/multiple-myeloma/about/what-is-multiple-myeloma.html

Anita (his wife) sent a separate message saying he enjoys getting mail (email & snail mail) – so if you are interested, I can forward you his info. He’s doing ok, chemo is going ok, so it’s that waiting time that’s happening.

And, Cameron I’d doing pretty well, all things considered.

  11. Going off grid for an hour to…. ride the trainer? 🤯

  12. Bob says:

Man, 2021 is going out with a bang!
Ageing parent issues, cancer, bike wrecks, Covid, it’s just nuts!
Got our test results last night and somehow Laura and I do not have Covid, Travis is still positive though. We will keep up the quarantine through the weekend and test again on Monday.
    Good times

    • Barb says:

      Excellent news Bob.
Katrina & Rohan have Covid over in Girona, I know (without talking to them) that Mary is freaking out. Katrina is hoping this doesn’t delay their return to Atlanta. (That’s joking, not joking)

    • Yeah, and we thought 2020 was fucked up!

Here’s to good health to all ITP Readers, and their families!

  13. Off the trainer. Now time for a shower before I throw everything into a crockpot for tonight’s dinner.

  14. Steve says:

Just heard my phone buzz and noticed the Cheddarhead cancellation. Right call.

Bob, good to hear you and Laura don’t have the cooties. I’m thinking I might have missed it as well, but you never know. Debbie was up for a while and went out to feed the horses after it stopped raining. She says she feels OK. I’m still keeping my distance…

  15. Barb says:

Tried to shovel the mess at the end of the driveway thanks to a late evening snowplow. It’s solid chunks of ice. That’s not happening. My basement dweller brother said he’d look for a sledgehammer for the big huge chunks.
I’m guessing that won’t actually happen.
He did have shoe goo, so I could fix the sole on my moms boot. He is good for something.

I’m off to lunch with a high school friend soon, she’s picking me up. Roads are a little icy & the old Buick needs to last forever (not that mom & dad drive, but change is horrible around here)

  16. Today’s WLF squirrel frustration was the complete annihilation of a kale plant that I was hoping to eat.
