D-Day (Again)

Another trip to the podiatrist is in the books.

Today’s Daily Challenge
Do a standing abdominal stretch.

Our abdominal muscles can become shortened if we sit for long periods of time during the day, or can become strained from sports or other everyday activities. This simple exercise helps to provide a quick stretch to those muscles and offers some relief for tight back muscles, as well.

I suppose that I could (and should) do this.

I Just Can’t Seem To Boot This Boot
Another quick meeting with the podiatrist this morning. His recommendation was that I continue to wear the boot (BOO!) and he is prescribing me a medication to apply to the area (in addition to the anti-inflamatory I am taking) as well as physical therapy. I’m oddly okay with all of this considering my recent lack of fun, lack of exercise, and weight gain.

I have a followup appointment (again) on July 12th, hopefully I will be fully healed and able to ride on the 13th. I’m trying not to repeat the summer of 2011 which was mostly a waste due to the hip injury caused by the bike wreck.

Captain Of Unproductivity
Recently I’ve been a slug, mentally in addition to physically. The only real “activity” of last night was watching two of the remaining four “Mad Men” episodes that I’ve downloaded (legally) from this season. I’ve heard that last Sunday’s was the season finale and I am making an attempt to catch up before anyone spoils the finale on me.

Unfortunately my personal productivity (read “self-initiated iOS training for my ‘future'”) has also suffered as I’ve not done any iOS development nor video watching. Though I know that I have an enormously-large deadline at work on July 10th (which may actually force me to work on some of my scheduled days off between now and then) I’ve stagnated and I am hoping my trip down to Florida restores my desire to create. However, unlike the trips you take to Florida I will be hanging out with my mother, aunts, and uncles for three days. My goal is to get some “Paulie Time” during the “golden hour” and do some photography. And from what I heard from the doctor this morning it sounds I’ll have to try and keep the sand out of my air cast now…

ITP Flickr Pic
Nothing. New photos guaranteed next week.

No Fun Again Tonight
Due to circumstances at work, many of which I am responsible for, I will most likely be pulling a “late night” at work. From work I will return home to pack clothes and camera for my trip which begins some time tomorrow afternoon.

This is not the life I anticipated as we head into July; by now I was hoping to be running again, riding again, and at least ten pounds lighter thanks to all of the hard work I did at the gym. I was also hoping this physical improvement would give me the mental confidence to try and ask women out again. I’m beaten (for now). But hey, the Jackmobile passed emissions testing last week, so at least I have that going for me.

  1. Much more on the Florida trip in tomorrow’s blog…

  2. Stacy says:

I’m kind of surprised that your doctor isn’t suggesting exercises you can do, even in a boot. Like, would the stationary bike not work at the gym? Or some sort of swimming even if it limited your kicking? Seems weird he’s not, especially if you’ve expressed your concern over lack of it because of Das Boot.

Guaranteed, huh? Awesome! Will be on the look out for awesome Florida pictures next week. Heading down to Florida myself next week and hope I can drag my ass up early enough one day to get sunrise pics but we’ll see about that. It IS vacation afterall.

  3. I think the plan is, at least until physical therapy begins, to immobilize the foot in order to reduce aggravation of the tendon. Even exercise such as stationary biking would require me to flex the foot somewhat. I could, and probably should consider wrapping the foot tightly in an Ace bandage and doing upper-body weight training; the lack of this is nothing more than laziness on my behalf.

In which part of Florida will you be, Stacy? I’ll be in Clearwater/Dunedin. I am going to attempt to revisit the Dunedin Brewery and return with at least one Scottish-themed souvenir (read “beer”) for Steve.

Oh man, I so wish that the Florida Welcome Center had these costumed conquistadors still, I might even let them put a bumper sticker on the Jackmobile!

  4. Steve says:

    Prezzies??? I like prezzies!

Yeah, I know this whole episode is taking something you have in short supply- patience! But patient you must be, young grasshopper, for it is the only way to heal properly. Whatever you do, don’t decide when it’s feeling pretty good to go and celebrate with a half-marathon or something equally crazy. We know you and that is completely in your nature.

Foster Maggie (Mae) is off to the vet for a checkup today. Hopefully, the little cough she had doesn’t turn into Kennel Cough or something equally nasty.

Depending on the weather, I should be at Georges tonight.

  5. Stacy says:

Ohmygosh, those conquistadors are awesome! I’m actually hoping to see some of those myself. I’ll be on the opposite side of the state — St. Augustine (thus the early wake-up plans: sunrise over the Atlantic). They’ve been commemorating the 500th anniversary of the state of Florida so I’m hoping that will mean people will be all dressed up and doing fun stuff. I will now be on a conquistador quest! (say that three times fast!)

  6. Okay then, the deal is you get sunrise photos and leave the sunsets to me on the west coast (of Florida).

Wow, I just saw that the conquistador photo was taken around 1965 — it’s about as old as I am!

Florida is five hundred years old? In-con-CEIV-able! I thought the only things in Florida that were five hundred years old were the residents. HEEEEEY OOOOOOOH! I’ll be there als the veeekend. 🙂

  7. Oh yeah, I was informed that my new eye glasses are on their way from Warby Parker, unfortunately I don’t think that they will make it to me before I depart tomorrow.

  8. Barb says:

I’ll probably never take a sunrise picture – I really don’t like getting up that early. Last Sunrise picture I tried to take was the hot air ballon ride morning, didn’t come out all that good.

Bummer if the new glasses don’t make it in, but if you need them adjusted – then what do you do?

  9. Stacy says:

Awesome: it’s a deal. I get the east coast; you get the west. When exactly will you be there? It’d be fun to try it on the same day.

Barb, I’m with you: I don’t necessarily LIKE getting up that early…. but I’m always super happy later when I do. Oh and I looooove to send postcards, so if anyone wants a postcard, let me know! 🙂

  10. Steve says:

I’m just back from a visit to my opthomologist and I mentioned your vendor sending you frames to try- he had never heard of that and was a bit surprised. He explained the optitian (sp) is supposed to measure the pupil distance to insure the correct fit. I’m still waiting to see what your complete experience is- I can say, so far, so good.

  11. Martha says:

It’s not really the 500th anniversary of the state of Florida, but of Ponce de León’s discovery of Florida (which isn’t really true either, since there were already people there). 🙂 I’ve always wanted to go to St. Augustine, maybe I’ll make that my third trip to the Sunshine State.

Just met with the third contractor…oh, it’s so exhausting. We got the first bid this morning, less than the first guy and there is more included…so feeling better about letting the first guy go.

Sleep was better last night, still woke up too early (3am) but I know its a process and will take sometime. At least with this medication I can function during the day. I was looking forward to running this morning but that rain came out of nowhere and now its hot and sticky out…HTFU I suppose.

  12. I’ll be there Friday through Monday afternoon. I have a dental appointment on 7/2 so I have to return Monday.

I’m up before sunrise every day and don’t mind much (except when it’s super cold). I used to also be able to stay awake until past midnight, but as I gotten older my bedtime has gotten earlier.

Steve, the Pupillary Distance (PD) is the piece of information optometrists hold back in order to try and force you to buy glasses from them. Insistent types (not me) can demand the information. Warby Parker has a thing on their website to measure your PD — this is what I used. I was going to find a place who would check my prescription and provide me with the PD as well, but I decided to basically take a $100 gamble to see how this works.

  13. Stacy says:

Ah… you’ll be back before I even go. I’m not headed down until the 4th.

Martha, I love St. A. This will be my 4th visit there: doing a “girlfriend getaway” this time which will actually involve laying on the beach as well as all the touristy stuff since she’s never been. It’s a beautiful city. Each time I go to Florida it seems to be either a) cold or b) rainy though…better not be next weekend!

  14. Barb says:

I did a very fun hash pub crawl in St Augustine a couple times (hared by Otis the town drunk), so you know I don’t remember much of the town – LOL
