2023-12-08

Yesterday started with much promise, but fizzled quickly. I suppose I should be happy that I was able to make and eat food already in my house again. I’ll attempt to pull of the feat again today, but will be meeting my buddy Hank for drinks later, which may result in dinner out.

This week has been a hit or miss week for me. Occasionally I have been inspired to do things, but then my enthusiasm is destroyed by one thing or another, such as my lingering injuries/pains. I have to admit, that this is rather frustrating to me.

East Atlanta has a new (to us) wings joint. Urban Wings has moved into the space on Moreland Avenue vacated by Delia’s. You know that I am not a vegetarian, but also don’t want to eat much meat nor spend a lot of money, so I don’t see me hitting Urban Wings often, but I am sure I will give them a try sometime in the nearish future.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Wordle: two, my starter was CHASE

My Beach brain took 6 to get Wordle. I got down to five after using all the vowels. I’m like how can you have a word with no vowels???? Then I looked up and saw that I had an A in my first guess that was correct. 2 mistakes in Connections.

This morning’s run, if done correctly, should spell BEACH. We’ll see how it goes. I suppose I should head back home sometime today as I have to be at work by 7 tomorrow.

Not sure I want to come back to reality. It’s been peaceful.

I need to start making some Christmas cards and I still need to make my Holiday jams.

Hope everyone has a great week-end.

    • Wow, you’ve mapped out the word BEACH? I’m sure it’s happened but I wasn’t involved, but I have always wanted a hash to spell out something like YBF, or ON-ON.

I’m sure it has been a peaceful trip. How were the breweries?

  2. I may have been the guy out before the sun claiming a few bags of yard waste from a neighbor’s yard. I plan to spread these leaves/clippings in the paths between my beds. Well I would if I were the type of person who claims yard waste bags… 😉

    • If I we’re the kind of person who would claim yard waste bags from a neighbors yard I would probably have spread said yard waste around a hypothetical WLF, and, opened up the yard waste bags to use as ground cover.

we had a nice visit from Jeff & Dana (Sauercrotch & Purple).
We reminisced about hashing here in ATL in the 90s, and he doesn’t miss the shit show that is ATL traffic. They live in Columbia. It took them forever to get across the Top end yesterday. Drank a little too much wine, not way too much, so I feel ok today.
Trying to decide if I should go to George’s tonight for the AFR Paramedic Supervisors or whatever their group is called dinner gathering. Allan is working, so I’d have to drive myself.

And Steve- you were right – it is the Lemons race this weekend.

  4. I keep getting conflicting information (read “emails from healthcare.gov”) about my 2024 healthcare. I’m going forward with the confirmation from Kaiser that they have created my account and received my first payment that I will be covered by them next year. As for my current insurer I believe that all I have to do is stop paying them and they will happily drop me.

Thank the sweet merciful sunflower that it’s Friday. Although it’s actually more comfortable being at the office given that it has an actual working kitchen. There appears to have been no progress yesterday.

Tomorrow is Finn’s 18th birthday! Birthday tradition requires us to go to Nakato to celebrate. He is getting some Sonic video game as his gift.

  6. Steve says:

And speaking of insurance, my call to United healthcare yesterday. Sent them off to go talk to the ambulance company that hauled Debbie from Newnan to Grady hospital. One part of the claim doc said they were in network and the printable statement said they were not. Hmmmm.

Last year I somehow managed to avoid getting Whammed and I was so proud of myself. This year I fucking heard it on December 6.

  8. Not going to lie, even with my aching feet I am proud of my accomplishments this morning. In addition to lugging bags of yard waste and spreading it into WLF, I just completed an hour on the trainer.

Now a shower, then commence to fixin’ lunch!

“Occasionally I have been inspired to do things, but then my enthusiasm is destroyed by one thing or another, such as my lingering injuries/pains.”

In my experience the solution is to do the opposite thing. Enthusiasm is created from momentum. Inertia is a motherfucker and never generates enthusiasm. Just last Sunday I could have listened to the troll in my head and lazed in my hotel room. I did the opposite thing which was to drive out to the desert, and I was far more rewarded by that experience than a couple of hours of laying around could ever dream to be.

I had a 7:00 AM breakfast at Thumbs Up this morning with my friend Rem, who’s been flying in and out of Atlanta for UPS this week. He flies back to Louisville at 11:15 PM tonight, and then next week he’ll be basing out of other places. It’s a rarified gift to have a lifelong friend that you can pick up immediately where you left off, no matter how much time has passed, and I’m glad that we could make our schedules sync up twice this week.

After that it was a massage day, and good grief I needed it after hiking 12 miles in the Grand Canyon last week. The 5 hours of driving that I did the next day, followed by 2 hours of driving back to Phoenix on Sunday, then 4 hours in an airplane seat did not do my body any favors. I do feel much less pretzel-like now.

I don’t have any particular plans this weekend other than getting some writing done, but I do have tentative plans afoot with friends, so I’m sure that I’ll get some social time in.

I did feel god-like yesterday after I figured out how to integrate ChatGPT directly into Excel, meaning that for the couple dozen more course descriptions that I need to write I don’t have to even copy my stuff into ChatGPT any more, I created an Excel formula that will send the prompt to ChatGPT and return the summary paragraph that gets built right into my spreadsheet.

I also discovered that ChatGPT is pretty remarkable for summarizing books. My therapist recommended that I read The Four Agreements, which is a book I’ve known about forever, but wasn’t ready to read yet. The summary that ChatGPT wrote for me gave me the highlights that help me confirm that the time has come for me to read that book.

Barb asked yesterday if I was the mystery hare participating with MC and Assmint’s SOB has this Sunday. Nope, not me. I shan’t be participating because day drinking just does not work for me. Running doesn’t really work for me either. I know this is for slow old bastards, for which I very much qualify, but I’ll be declining this particular opportunity. On, on!

    • It’s hard when physical pain limits your possibilities. Fortunately I can still pedal, and today I’m going to see how I much pain feel walking.

      Funny about SOB.

    • David says:

Oh, Wordle in 5, I got stuck in the gutter with 4 correct letters after 3, and then it took two more tries. Only one miss on Connections.

    • Barb says:

I’m not sure if I will go to the hash on Sunday -and there is NEVER any running for me, I walk trails.

  10. Jenka says:

Absolutely perfect on Connections! Woot! Yellow > green > blue > purple.
